Live, 4K ultra high definition video from the main stage of the 2018 Berkeley Early Music Festival, performed on original instruments.
This extraordinary work was composed circa 1712 and is one of only a handful of concertos that includes Vivaldi's original, high-voltage cadenzas. For this performance, Voices of Music prepared a new edition of the work from the original manuscripts: the dedication on the Pisandel ms. reads "fatto per la solennità della S. Lingua di St Antonio in Padua." This inscription most likely refers to the celebrations held at the basilica of St. Anthony (see Talbot, "The Vivaldi Compendium"). The range of the cadenza extends beyond the fingerboard of the violin, remarkable in 1712, and the concerto was singled out by Vivaldi's critics for its over-the-top virtuosity. A remarkable feature of the music is the call and response effects, borrowed from sacred music, which accompany the soloist. This work is here presented for the first time in 4K video.
A native of New Jersey, Alana Youssefian has quickly forged a reputation as an engaging and spirited soloist, chamber player, and orchestral musician. Hailed for her “incredible poise,” “sensitive dynamics,” and “plangent emotional involvement” (The Boston Musical Intelligencer), Ms. Youssefian has performed internationally as a concertmaster and soloist, in addition to holding engagements at venues such as the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, Carnegie Hall, and Alice Tully Hall. Ms. Youssefian is a graduate of The Juilliard School's Historical Performance Program, where she studied with Elizabeth Blumenstock, and Rachel Podger. I wept at the sheer humanity of this performance. Her fellow musicians clearly love, admire, and are inspired by Ms. Youssefian. The looks of joy and aliveness on their faces make me feel like life is worth living again. This is what humans can do - make music like this. It gives us great worth and meaning as a species. I hope that Ms. Youssefian and her fellow musicians are leading happy lives. I wish and pray for this.

Alana Youssefian is very impressive. She makes all of those rapid key shifts look insanely easy... and they really, really aren't. Don't believe me? Just look at the reactions of the cellists @ 4:54 . Almost as though to say "Okay, now she's just showing off" LOL. Simply a phenomenal display of her mastery over the violin. I really like how free Alana looks without the chin rest and shoulder rest on the violin, so many violinists are locked into the instrument with shoulder rest contraptions like the Bonmusica, she is free to move but it must make holding the violin steady harder.

Voices of Music & their virtuoso guest violinists like Cynthia Freivogel & here Alana Y, have opened my ears to Vivaldi ! Ive never really been drawn in by Vivaldi - (Four Seasons has been played a billion times! ) but hearing these kinds of performances by VoM, Alana , Cynthia et al , I've come to an epiphany that Antonio Vivaldi is in fact an underrated genius! The solo cadenza section at 3:27 onwards with the final flourish is AWESOME! 👏👏👍😃
As a Vivaldi's huge fan who never listened to this before I wonder how many other hidden pearls are there waiting to be listened... Thanks Voies of Music for bringing to light such an amazing composition!
The trouble with Vivaldi and Telemann, amongst others, they composed too much, so much so it is a struggle to get a quality handle on their compositions. It is niot like the 9 symphonies of Beethoven.

Great rendition of this concerto! I have generally been a foe of Baroque music played too fast - but Ms. Youssefian plays it with such clarity that the music isn't muddled; it is a testimony to the proper playing of Baroque music. And of course the Voices of Music complements her playing very well.
I like the way she ignored her lack of fingerboard and just kept climbing!
It does feel too fast but she is so brilliant that in the end l was simply awestruck and didn’t care

Not so strange, really. Vivaldi wrote, what? something like 300 concertos. Even if you found a recorded set of all of them (is there even such a thing?) you'd have a hard time remembering them all.

I guess all of those "You can't shift without a shoulder rest", "Baroque doesn't have high positions" thoughts have gone out the window. Amazing. Really amazing. And A. Youssefian is so musical, she doesn't show off as a soloist, she just plays Music that requires incredible technical difficulties. Music comes first and that's what makes it so amazing. I actually didn't think this could be done, I continue to be shocked everytime I watch this.
