- Gorilla break glass at Henry Doorly Zoo and Aquarium in Omaha, Nebraska - Caught on Camera!
OMAHA, Neb. (KMTV) - A video of a gorilla at Omaha’s Henry Doorly Zoo and Aquarium has gone viral.
Zoo Curator, Dan Cassidy, says with three gorillas, aged 17 to 22 trying to establish dominance in the same space, they're bound to see testosterone and aggression as these gorillas transition into adulthood.
In the video you can see the reflection of a little girl pounding on her chest as she looks at the male gorillas. One of the gorillas, known as "Kijito", charges to the glass and breaks through the first of three layers of protective glass.
The zoo says this isn't the first time they've seen this before. It's common for the glass to break because of environmental or engineering causes. Gorillas also beat on the glass to makes sounds that scare off their peers.
Curators say while the gorilla did break through a layer of glass, the zoo checks and replaces the glass frequently.
The three gorillas in the exhibit are currently transitioning from blackbacks to silverbacks, as they enter into manhood.

My daughter is 5. I have taught her not to use gestures she sees with animals unless she knows what it means. I've taught her that animals have language we don't understand and you could be telling them the wrong thing by just imitation. She knows dog and cats language more but she would ask me what beating on the chest means before she would do it. I think that this is an important lesson that should be engrained early on in children mostly for dog safety. So yes parents should teach their kids about the real world and not just our man made safety spaces.

Well, they are about 300-400lbs of all dense and short tendon muscle. Their calves don’t even have tendons and the muscle connects directly to the bone. They are incredibly powerful due to having short tendons.

Actually, in some cases, it's the only possible "home" for them as forrests get destroyed for palm oil.
Zoos also do a lot of good. Many have mating programs to keep threatened species from going extinct. And an animal raised in captivity is not likely to make it in the wild.

That news anchor loos deranged. Also this happened to me at this same zoo about 15 years ago. I went with my mom and sister and while my sister and I were inside we saw two gorillas. The mother gorilla and the baby were separated. I saw the anger and frustration in the mother, while my sister and I sat idly watching them she balled up her fist and swung it like a ball peen hammer. It cracked the glass and started to swing again. My sister and I turned and ran to the left immediately and I remember the most terrifying part of the whole ordeal was that the doors were swinging, not stationary. I thought to myself as we were running away, "holy shit what if it gets out- there's nothing in between us". We ran to my mom who wasn't far and turned around to see that it never escaped. Even the memory gets my heart pumping. What amazing creatures and what a beautiful zoo. That was the first time I experienced empathy. For the mother who was just pissed off. I know have a whole new respect for nature.

Zoos need to establish better rules and enforce them. She was staring at the gorilla and beating her chest, which is a challenge and should not be allowed. I have nothing against children, but they can't be allowed to run around screaming and pounding on glass and stressing out the animals. Bad enough animals are in zoos at all, but they deserve to not be stressed out by gawking out of control people.

Yes BUT there are different types of zoo's, some that don't care about the animals and are HORRIBLE, others that still capture animals but take the time to rebuild their habitats (Which is MUCH better than the first one I mentioned), and then there's the zoo's that capture's the animals to protect them because The species are going extinct. while this one looks like the second one I mentioned it's still not okay to do this to animals but at least they're trying to make sure that the animals are happy while they're there.

They are not in a cage....they are in a very large area, in some zoos, several acres, with food, stimulating games, and company. They are safe from the idiots who still try to kill them. They are endangered in the wild. Zoos have programs to protect them and exchange them, so that someday they can be returned. Many zoos do that now with smaller animals that can safely be returned.

My brother worked at a large zoo for a long time and one of the things he came away with is that the gorillas have more strength than the visitors realize and if one wanted to, a Silverback could have easily escaped and killed people.

I think something should be said about the little girl mimicking a dominance behavior. Nobody mentioned that. We have to remember, and tell our children, that this is not a game or a toy.
