Thermal Modification Process - Lunawood

  • For more than 20 years, we have developed and manufactured sustainable and trademarked ThermoWood® products in Finland, by using only heat and steam.
    The patented ThermoWood® process can be simplified into three phases. First, carefully selected Nordic sawn timber is moved to a kiln for a high-temperature drying. Heat is used for removing moisture from the wood, and steam to prevent cracking.
    In the next phase, the steady temperature is maintained for chemical and physical changes to happen. The high temperature gives the wood its brown colour and removes harmful extractives. The moisture content of the wood is absolute zero.
    After the high-temperature drying, the temperature is decreased using steam and water. This adjusts the moisture content of the end-products from 4 to 7 percent, improving the wood´s dimensional stability and durability without a fear of cracking. After the final phase, the wood is ready for quality control and planing.
    With this strictly controlled and eco-friendly process we are able to improve the properties of the wood significantly. Lunawood products are suitable for a wide range of applications and last in all climate conditions without needing any surface treatment.
