I cannot fathom Archers having as much of a resurgence as they are now. I got into them in 2003, during my "I WISH I WAS A TEEN IN THE 90S!" phase after hearing them on the Mallrats soundtrack. I immediately went out and bought Icky Mettle, which I had to special order at my record store and I loved every second of it. The cashier actually made fun of me being into a band that he thought was old news and it continued to be an ongoing joke every time I came in. I bought more of their stuff throughout high school, but more bands came and went. Cut to like, three years ago and their video sections are full of people just finding them from /mu/ and it just blows my mind that they're having this second wind.
I don't really think AoL are having a resurgence, some newer listeners have discovered them and loved them, but not quite as much as a fad. Haha, I can relate to the people think you're weird for liking older bands totally. Good music stands the test of time, and I'll always love AoL!!
I'm not surprised by their resurgence. Archer's isn't my favorite indie band, but I can see how they are relatable and they bring out some of the charm of generation x. I remember Icky Mettle being pretty big, but there were just so many good bands and albums coming out around that time they didn't overtly stick out to me. Their music has aged well. Gen x is now at a stage where a lot of people's kids are going off to college so they have more time for nostalgia.
This is a great, comprehensive introduction to one of my favorite bands from the 90s. I remember when a friend made a mix tape for me in junior high school (around 93/94 or so) and put a bunch of Archers songs on it. I couldn't get enough. It was like nothing else I'd heard and super catchy. The lyrics were also relavent as I was an angsty teenager. I got to see Archers twice in the 90s and both times they put on amazing shows. For me, The Lowest Part is Free is probably my favorite song. It's got everything, catchy hooks, heavy parts, sonic guitar parts, and is short and to the point. And it's done in it's own unique way. What a band!
"Telepathic Traffic" has to be in the Top Ten conversation. It was not on any of their studio albums, but appeared in their collection of demos, B-sides and other misc tracks called The Speed of Cattle. Archers fans generally regard this song as the hidden treasure of Archers lore.
My band were extremely fortunate to support The Archers when they played in Melbourne. I had the opportunity to meet them, and for the record, they were lovely chaps.
Hi Stella, yet another insightful and interesting video. 90s indie rock has a unique sensibility that ties it to time and place and there has really been nothing like it since. As you identify in your video when talking about the influence of The Replacements, bands like Archers of Loaf drew less upon the experimental and more on the edgy and musically raw parts of the punk and post punk catalogue (Husker Du, Dinosaur Jr, Pixies). There was an explosion of musical creativity in the early 1990s. It just so happened that the 'Seattle scene' became more prominent because the mainstream media could latch on to the bits it could relate to (big record sales, grunge as a 'cool brand', classic rock and heavy metal influences, appealing video clips etc). But there was so much more going on that the big record companies and marketing and promotions people paid little attention to. Archers of Loaf flew under the mainstream radar because the band focused on writing good songs rather than inventing a sellable image. Another good example is Built to Spill who put out a number of superb albums picked up by those indie rock fans open to new sounds. 'Icky Mettle' is one of the most musically exciting albums of the 1990s and you did a great job explaining why bands like Archers of Loaf matter.

My favorite Archers song is probably "What Did You Expect?", it's just so powerful and catchy. I'm obsessed with that song, and the double vocals and the dissonant guitars on the refrain. Reminds me a lot of Les Savy Fav's debut album, which came some years later. But also a nice Brainiac vibe. Fantastic synergy on that song. Great drums. TUNE!! And way too overlooked btw

Web In Front is one of the coolest songs ever, by anyone. Nice introduction to a great band and time in American music. So cool that you included that insanely catchy chorus from Wrong! There’s a very wobbly line from the early Eno pop songs like Needle In the Camel’s Eye to things like Icky Mettle. I used to listen to it and Superchunk and Guided by Voices constantly in the late nineties. So cool that you like music like this.
My Top 10 are Wrong, Might, Harnessed in Slums, Web in Front, Let the Loser Melt, Strangled by the Stereo Wire, Step into the Light, Underdogs of Nipomo, Plumb Line, Fabricoh. I remember seeing the video for "Web in Front" on Mtv in '93 while in college, and instantly liking AoL. Archers often reminded me of 'Mats too! So thanks for saying that. Especially "Harnessed in Slums", I could easily hear Westerberg sing and play like that in the mid-80's. Two amazing bands! But still I like the indie grass roots feel of the channel. I think gen-xers like hearing a fresh perspective on their favorite indie bands and not listening or reading some Gen-X emo writer who is a so called music expert.

And then I, a generic brand suburban white boy, heard Boiling Point 36 °C, and it was like greatest song in the world to me

I saw AoL many many times in the 1990’s, they used to play in Danbury, Connecticut at least once if not twice a year. Many other Chapel Hill/triangle bands used to play in Connecticut and the Connecticut bands (especially Monsterland and St. Johnny) would play there. I was supposed to see Archers twice in 2020 (Boston, Massachusetts and Lawrence, Kansas) but covid cancelled those. 😡 I am seeing Eric Bachmann do a solo acoustic set in someone’s house next month!
Oh those are memories! Would looove to have seen them back in the day, if only time machine were possible!! :( Hope you get to see AoL soon and enjoy the EB home show!!

I've actually only really listened to Icky Mettle and Vs the Greatest of All Time, I think it's time I listen to the rest of their stuff! You and me, plumb line oh you know? just that whole album. I kind of over did it though and hadn't listened to it until years later. I moved to a new country and the train crossing signals sound hit a note that clicked Web in front on replay in my head. I walked out of a station and bang! right there at a 2nd hand book shop was Icky Mettle for 50 cents. Serendipitous!? But that album works when your not down too, who knew? 🤨

This is fantastic, I really liked your comparison of lowest part is free and left of the dial (both some of my favorite songs of all time). I've actually only really listened to Icky Mettle and Vs the Greatest of All Time, I think it's time I listen to the rest of their stuff!

@@StellasEncounter not really, but needless to say that album stuck to me like glue and eerily fit the however many stages of grief I experienced. You and me, plumb line oh you know? just that whole album. I kind of over did it though and hadn't listened to it until years later. I moved to a new country and the train crossing signals sound hit a note that clicked Web in front on replay in my head. I walked out of a station and bang! right there at a 2nd hand book shop was Icky Mettle for 50 cents. Serendipitous!? But that album works when your not down too, who knew? 🤨
