Fairly straightforward. Worth the money in my opinion if you’re into the world of digital amps/modelers. Thanks for the qc videos, and now, thank you for the ampero videos too!
I would like to say... I know this unit has taken a lot of bad reviews for its pitch shifting ...and at first when I heard it , i too thought it was bad...BUT.. i played around with the quad pitch using just one of the pitches, and it works great. It does full chord tune downs very well.
Really glad you picked one of these up. Got mine on Reverb to throw in my carry on when I travel as I don't care for computer based plugins (bias, etc). Have been really pleased with it. It takes very little time to learn the touch screen interface (have never found the need to even download the software interface, whereas on Axe, Helix, and Kemper, I completely depend on the software interfaces), love the signal chain templates and the fact that you can move anything around in the signal chain as well as the scads of effects and amps. This is definitely a gigable device from a sound perspective. Lack of snapshots is a bit of a downer but hopefully can be added in the future. I prefer this to the HX stomp and while it is not in the same league as an Axe FX 3, which I also own, I think when you consider what you get for your money, it is very close. Looking forward to more videos!
Well, I just received the younger brother, the Ampero Mini, and man, I am so blown away by how amazingly great it sounds! I mean, it's nothing like the Nux MG300 or Mooer GE200 that I had before and sold. This is on a whole other level like with my UA Dream 65, except it does so much more!. Every effect and amp I've tried sounds so good!.
I've had mine since it was first released. Absolutely love it. It replaced my Fractal FM3, which sounded great but was sometimes difficult to use and couldn't do dual amps. My only 2 gripes were I wish the Ampero Stomp had more fuzz options, and the processing power is (understandably) limited. To the second point, I ended up offboarding my reverb and delay to discrete MIDI-controlled pedals and now I can do pretty much anything with the remaining processing power on the Ampero. I still haven't found a suitable solution for the first issue, especially since analog fuzz pedals tend to be temperamental in signal chains and with modelers, so here's hoping Hotone release more firmware updates with more models.
I have the original Hotone Ampero and prefer it to the Line 6 Helix and other similar modeling units. I recently released and album and all the guitar and bass tones are from using the Hotone Ampero recorded direct. The only pedals I used were the Boss SY-2, the Mel9, the EQD Afterneath and the Astral Destiny. I'm interested in getting the Ampero 2 as well. These units are very intuitive and user friendly. I've never consulted the manual.
I got this modeller around new year when I got back into guitar. Something I like to do with just a serial, single amp patch is to choose a pre-amp block and pair it with a power-amp in the amp block. With the separate power amp you can choose the type of tube simulation, sag, etc. Sometimes I get a little bit more tactility when using it that way. BTW, there is an auto cab-matching option in GLOBAL>Controls> AUTO CAB MATCH. That can save some time fiddling around. The computer software is decent but it comes with a massive quirk in that it doesn't like you using the physical unit when using the software. As soon as you touch the unit (a button, or knob) the software needs to reinitialise again to be used, which is something everyone has complained about since launch. Pleasantly surprised that you picked this up. The things holding it back right now are DSP optimisation and maybe the absence of a scenes/snapshot function. Also, I can completely agree that the footswitching needs some work, especially with MIDI. I got the Ampero Control MIDI footswitcher and you can only program to blocks (A1,A2,A3, etc) instead of assigning it to RVB, RVB2, DLY, DLY2 which would be easier to use. Requires a lot of memorising and fiddling to get everything set up. Otherwise, the MIDI functionality is pretty good in my newbie estimation They're updating it more and more right now so hopefully it can be a serious competitor to the HX Stomp within a year. Cautiously optimistic. Although, if an HX Stomp 2 came out and had more features and more DSP, I'd probably trade up. (ALSO, HOLY SHIT THANK YOU FOR SHOWING ME THIS HAS A HARMONISER)
@@johnnathancordy Try using it in 4 cable method with a head and cab of yours (like a Mesa + V30 cab). You can then select the poweramp of your Mesa, or use one of the Hotone preamps. Very easy to compare a real-amp preamp to a modelled one this way while keeping the power section and speaker the same.
@@johnnathancordy I'm not sure but it would be nice if they integrated the power amp settings into every amp model possible to save a block space. Mix/matching different power tubes to different amps is interesting as well.

Hey great sounding track and improvisation for this review by the way! Kudos!
Love mine! Its simple, easy, and sounds enormous. Fits in the front pocket of my guitar bag. Run it into the FX Loop of my Stageright 15 and its a killer budget rig that will hang with most drummers, and sound insane while doing so. My only complaints are that the volume jumps on my unit, just past noon. Also, the reverbs could be better. Finally, the software has this bug that still hasn't been fixed since launch, where if you touch anything on the floor unit, it will completely reload everything in the software. Its super annoying. But aside from that, the PC editor is actually very good. No other complaints. Also the touchscreen is generally far more intuitive than most other modelers (FM3 AHEM).
I think maybe I just don't get on with touchscreen in general...But yeh that aside, I'm finding it intuitive - the only tricky bit was the footswitch assigning but it seems there's an easier way?
@@johnnathancordy yes, on the main menu, swipe right when in stomp mode and you can assign what each know does for footswitching, either by turning the black knobs or by using the touch screen and going left or right in the assigned field...

Awesome playing as always. Your demo really made me appreciate the ease of the UI with the Helix products. Sounds good but I'd prefer to spend more time playing and less time tweaking.
I have one, for real, the touch screen is awesome. Only thing you need to adapt. The way John did in the video is pressing the icon/block too long it goes into options. When you need to move blocks around, you need to touch and drag them asap. Trust me, it doesn't suck.
I think maybe I just don't like touch screens in general, also I'm finding that when you drag and drop sometimes it totally rearranges your signal chain in what looks like a random order?
A simpler way to assign your foot switches in to just arrow over to the right on the main screen. Then u can select the function of each footswitche without having to dive into the menus. Great review! I've had this for a few months now and am enjoying it.
Before jumping on the Helix wagon I had considered Headrush. Boy how glad I am I chose Helix. I am not talking sounds etc but user interface. People think touch screens are godsend. They are NOT

I actually sold my Helix LT to get one...hear me out though, I'm a bedroom/house player only and I have my DAW plugged into various monitors, my LT was gathering dust simply because it was too big to be convenient and got shoved under my studio room sofa, I also use real amps, Helix Native etc etc. I found no real reason to plug into the LT and sold it for £50 less than I paid because prices have gone up. This thing is so convenient and can be carried around the house and just plugged in anywhere, effects are way off the LT (Can stick my HX effects in the loop though if needed) but amp models are on par...dare I say better. Personal preference I guess but it's now my go to thing for sitting down and noodling around with. I'd be interested to see what you could achieve combining it with the HX effects.
Very interested. DOes it have a good editor? Does the editor run on MAC, iOS? Can you turn off the cabs that are in your presets globally (like if you are using a power amp and guitar cab instead of going direct or to an FRFR)? Looking forward to seeing your more in depth review.
Hype to hear your thoughts on it. Has lots of ups and some downs. I wished they implemented simply dragging presets to rearrange them on the damn editor. It's such a no brainer and such a hindrance in workflow to not have such an obvious feature. It's what i hate the most about my ampero. Also, you've GOT to try the acoustic sim. Hands down best acoustic sim of any modeler.
Hi John, My HeLix LT is under repair and I decided to take the Ampero Stage to replace it.. Would your presets that you created for the Ampero II be compatible? THANKS
I have been shopping around for a multi-effects pedal in this price range, watching dozens of reviews on every pedal. The Ampero 2 though lacking a Looper save which was a real bummer to hear is still the best sounding of the pedals followed by the mooer ge250/300.
My 2nd hand HX Stomp is due to arrive tomorrow as there are none available new in Australia and very few quality reviews on the Ampero Stomp 2 to be found. Needless to say I hope you don’t like it too much.
It's not going to replace the HX Stomp, but I'll be happy to play it in videos and create tones for it - obviously you know the HX Stomp is here to stay!
Thank you for this mate. I got this in April and play primarily through headphones and I'm pleasantly surprised for my first entry into amp sims. I was looking at the Helix but decided against it due to cost and block size. I datasheet dived way too much and have FOMO for the Helix still for the community/patches. Please, please, please - build patches for this unit. The only bad thing I see about this, is that there is no community and all the patches from the Ampero 1 are not compatible. Helpful hint as well, if you get the user guide or load the Hotone desktop application - the description says what the effect/amp is based on, or gives helpful hints.
@@FPauwels thanks mate! I knew that existed but it wasn’t great. I didn’t know the languages trick so I’ll try that. I tried a Gravity GMX patch that was just horrible. I’m hoping for someone to put out quality patches, if John Cordy decides to put some out; I’ll be the first to buy them!

@@FPauwels This is kind of my point. I don't speak spanish/portuguese and barely speak English well - so those don't really appeal to me because I have no idea what is going on. There is not a lot for the Amerpo II (because its relatively new). This is why I have fomo about not getting the HX Stomp - the community behind it and support track record. I'm enjoying my Ampero II for the sounds though....
so if I wanted say a clean patch and then a high gain patch, I could switch between them, but If I wanted the high gain patch to have a delay that I could switch on or off, I wouldn't be able to do that while also switching between patches
Got mine couple of days ago! I think it sounds great and the touch screen is suprisingly good. I am not sure if I keep it as I don't know whether it is worth of using plugins
I think as they work out the kinds with the interface and add some modes/features. Something like scenes. I doubt they could be as flexible as snapshots but at the very least the ability to turn off and on multiple effects with one button. Anyway, interested to hear your long term feelings comparing tones and flexibility to the HX Stomp.
Nice video. I would love to see your thoughts on where it sits vs the HX stomp etc when you’ve had a chance to use it more. Is it good enough that you shouldn’t spend not that much more to get the HX?
These are great videos! Think I’m gonna go ahead and plunk down for one (I’ll be using it with an EWI, not a guitar or bass). Quick question: it seems there is a decent-looking editor app with the thing. Curious if you find that easier to work with that the touch screen (which looks a bit finicky in your videos). I’ll be totally fine with making and editing my presets on my Mac, and just using the on-unit controls to tweak params a bit while playing. Think that’ll work out okay for me? Thanks for all your great content! 😁
I'm getting back into playing after a few years off. I used to have a Marshall JVM410H paired with an Orange PPC212 cab. Definitely don't have the budget for that setup again so have been looking into sub £500 modelling options instead. The tones from the Stomp 2 are pretty impressive as I'm sure everyone would agree, but to get there the process is unbelievably finicky by the looks of it and that's such a deal breaker... Nothing can beat plugging your guitar straight into a valve head and jamming. These modellers require so much work before you can start playing...
You are a huge player of hx stomp.i have Ampero stomp 2 at home. Great product, sound much more DSP power than hx stomp ( could you give your opinion on this ? ). I hesitate. Hotone is a one shot product brand, I don't think their support with update will continue in a year...
Quite the device…but your taste and chops could make a transistor radio sound pretty good. Have you tried the Zoom G11? That seems under-appreciated too, but I’d value you’re take on it.
Hi John. /love your videos. Been following your Ampero 2 Stomp videos religiously since I plan to get one. One thing I observed in this video is that you looped your guitar and then played with a drum track synced perfectly to the guitar loop. Is there a possibility that you used the MIDI clock to get your loop so perfectly in time? /looking forward to hearing from you. :)
Are your strats shielded, John? I hate the hum of true single coils. So I have to use the least amount of gain possible and find a position in space which produces the least noise.
@@martyshwaartz971 that's fine but I don't like the sound of 2 or 4 much. I've shielded my Strat but I find that sitting in front of the computer with lots of gain it doesn't make much difference as you still get lots of noise
Battle of the Stomps coming soon I guess? It’s £60 cheaper than than the HX at Andertons, so not worth anyone switching and considering all the Helix knowledge and patches out there, perhaps not even for a noob
Maybe, I guess there's a lot of choice out there - one of the things I like in this is the variety of amps etc and drive pedals seem to be a little bit different to what you get on some other modelers? But yeh, I couldn't see making a full switch for anyone already owning a modeller, and exactly the community is a big part of what makes the Helix work!
i'd like to know how this thing plays with pedals. i like it, sounds great. as a bedroom player this is perfect. my AC30 is too fucking loud, the piece of shit.
@@johnnathancordy I guess it can be a little finicky at times.. but overall it works really well once I got used to it.. the hardest part for me was around the edges of the screen with fat fingers.

@@markrebetzke7693 There is a whole Brazilian/portuguese community that is making patches for the Ampero II.... like Samuel Ferreira, Rafael Luz, Gabriel Roloff, etc. All on youtube, unfortunatly my portuguese is non-existant
@@FPauwels This is kind of my point. I don't speak spanish/portuguese and barely speak English well - so those don't really appeal to me because I have no idea what is going on.
Have a search at the volume of patches that are available for Line HX stomp and the original Ampero. There are thousands and communities everywhere. There is not a lot for the Amerpo II (because its relatively new).
This is why I have fomo about not getting the HX Stomp - the community behind it and support track record.
I'm enjoying my Ampero II for the sounds though....
Will you add your presets to a folder? Love your sound and the ampero II!
so if I wanted say a clean patch and then a high gain patch, I could switch between them, but If I wanted the high gain patch to have a delay that I could switch on or off, I wouldn't be able to do that while also switching between patches
Why you didn't use the IRs? Don't you think it sounds better with them?
How many things can I hook up at one time e.g., my Boss Looper pedal, Hotone Switch, Hotone expression pedal.
Is there a way to get the backing tracks that you use?
Sounds great so how's the feel compared to a Fractal FM3 of AX8?
I'm getting back into playing after a few years off. I used to have a Marshall JVM410H paired with an Orange PPC212 cab. Definitely don't have the budget for that setup again so have been looking into sub £500 modelling options instead. The tones from the Stomp 2 are pretty impressive as I'm sure everyone would agree, but to get there the process is unbelievably finicky by the looks of it and that's such a deal breaker... Nothing can beat plugging your guitar straight into a valve head and jamming. These modellers require so much work before you can start playing...
What's your opinions on Headrush? Do you have plans to check out the MX5? Great video btw!
Told you it was a good pedal 🤘🤘🤘 enjoy
Do you think I you could do a video on controlling this with a MIDI controller, such as the HX Effects?
What are those cords at start of video beautiful
You are a huge player of hx stomp.i have Ampero stomp 2 at home. Great product, sound much more DSP power than hx stomp ( could you give your opinion on this ? ). I hesitate. Hotone is a one shot product brand, I don't think their support with update will continue in a year...
Quite the device…but your taste and chops could make a transistor radio sound pretty good.
Have you tried the Zoom G11? That seems under-appreciated too, but I’d value you’re take on it.
Absolutely gorgeous playing!! Wow!
Have you tried strats with a reverse wound middle pickup? Kills hum in positions 2 and 4.
@@martyshwaartz971 that's fine but I don't like the sound of 2 or 4 much. I've shielded my Strat but I find that sitting in front of the computer with lots of gain it doesn't make much difference as you still get lots of noise
@@martyshwaartz971 It helps for sure. Starting to like position 4 a bit better now. Playing at a decent volume helps it to become digestible.
ok. you convinced me. ill buy that lol
Hey dude, amazing video! Can you provide us this beautiful backing track?
pq da pra ouvi na hora de trocar os capitadores
Battle of the Stomps coming soon I guess? It’s £60 cheaper than than the HX at Andertons, so not worth anyone switching and considering all the Helix knowledge and patches out there, perhaps not even for a noob
Maybe, I guess there's a lot of choice out there - one of the things I like in this is the variety of amps etc and drive pedals seem to be a little bit different to what you get on some other modelers? But yeh, I couldn't see making a full switch for anyone already owning a modeller, and exactly the community is a big part of what makes the Helix work!
❤
What is the brand of the strat?
K-Line
@@bryantwalley K expensive lol
@@adilsonobelard9690 quality cost money.
@@bryantwalley yeah with this price there a lot of good options out there with better resale value.
I created the files with the images with the real names
Playing 10, sound 10, menu diving 😩not for me, I’m too lazy.
Totally understood - I think that's why the Iridium/UAFX stuff still has an important place for many guitarists!
15:04 life is good….
i'd like to know how this thing plays with pedals. i like it, sounds great. as a bedroom player this is perfect. my AC30 is too fucking loud, the piece of shit.
You leave that AC30 alone...It's loud but lovely...
I am surprised by your ability to improvise
Wow dude.. you really made the touchscreen look useless... but it works perfectly on mine. Maybe don't try (push) so hard.
It's not useless but if you hesitate with it for some reason it brings up that little menu thing...
@@johnnathancordy I guess it can be a little finicky at times.. but overall it works really well once I got used to it.. the hardest part for me was around the edges of the screen with fat fingers.
Tried the Ampero. For my money, I’d rather just get a Line 6 Pod Go. The editor felt cheap, to me.
Totally fair, but for me I think the parallel options in the Ampero would sway me?
I opened one of this yesterday. Tried to make a signal chain preset: compressor, volume, wah, amp, cab, rev, delay, modulation. It couldn’t handle it, it started freaking out something about dsp. Put it back in the box and it’s going back to the seller. Rubbish.
