    Device A: Axe FX
    Device B: Hotone Ampero Stomp
(obviously there are a million different tones in each of these things, so this doesn't really mean anything other than the Ampero can sound decent)
Do you prefer Device A or B - I think things could be dialled to sound much closer, this was just a very quick experiment - I was fairly impressed though! Of course, the upside to some of the more expensive modelers is that they not only sound great, but they also have REAL practical gigging layouts/button assignments etc. This is where at the cheaper end of the market I think users are still missing out.

I personally really preferred B, it seemed to have a clearer more open sound, and it sounded a lot less compressed. Option A was more dark, almost muddy sounding, and didn't have very much detail. They of course are both very usable sounds, but when I heard B then went back to A, the difference was apparent and I much prefer B. I have a suspicion that B is the Hotone, and I am very impressed.

John, thanks so much for sharing your work with the Ampero 2 Stomp. Not a lot of useful videos on TH-cam for it, so any others you make would be welcome. I picked one up a few months ago at a discount and have only used it as an amp and cab model for recording, and that's working well. Haven't really taken the time to explore the rest of it, but you're giving me great ideas. Thanks!

Man.. that was a beautiful sounding preset.. Love that you are digging into the Hotone.. I bought one very early on for running dual amp stereo rigs and was so blown away with how much versatility they crammed into such a small package that I bought another one to live in front of the computer.. For the versatility and the money, I don't think I could point anyone in another direction.. The only drawback it has is that it is limited to 44.1 sampling as I recall... but it still sounds, and feels amazing..

I like how you explain that, you can dial in pretty much the same thing with any modeller. I had a certain budget so I went with the Ampero 2 with that in mind. When I couldn’t afford the HX. HX stomp is reaching around 2 grand plus here in NZ. Freaking ridiculous. Not many channels are showing you much on the Ampero 2 since it’s release and if there is they don’t do any presets with the same principles close to what you do, be it any modeller. Great post! You make any modeller sound good because of your ear and vast experience in this field. You’re way ahead! I don’t go anywhere else. Thank you for the preset. 🙏 I’m really enjoying my Ampero 2. Be good if they did have snapshots feature but I’m happy with its sound.

  • @david_farmer
    @david_farmer 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

I'm with you on all this sentiment. Pretty much anything these days can get a really usable tone. I never expect any two tones to sound exactly the same, its just nuances and subtle differences that can usually be resolved. The same with both of these tones. I liked them both, and after a bit of back & forth found I actually preferred B. There was a bit of clarity and somehow more of the "speaker" even though both were using the same IR I think. Again both are really good. It's just a matter of preference isn't it?
I picked up an Ampero 2 a couple of months ago. I already had Helix Native, and was debating whether to pick up something in the Helix line, but thought I'd get an Ampero 2 just to have access to "somewhat" different sounds, at least for recording. I've been super happy with the Ampero 2.
Along the lines of what you mentioned, yesterday I saw your "Trainwreck" Helix video and dialed in something similar using the "Pool Wrecker" in the Ampero. There are a lot of really great sounds in this thing and the default settings for lots of the "gear" seems to be really good which is helpful.
IR loading has really changed the game. I'll bet a PODxt through these modern IR's would sound pretty good. I'll have to dig mine out and give it a go.

    Better tone is totally subjective.
I started buying a Zoom G3n. Mostly used it for the effects, as I use real amps. Liked most of the amp sims on it when using headphones. So many sounded great with the factory presets that I rarelly had to tweak them.
Then I bought a Joyo American Sound. I love it. It sounds and feels great. And you have to really want to make it sound bad for it to sound bad. Works great thru headphones and even works great in front of an amp (maybe it would be even better if you could bypass the internal "cab sim" eq thing). I would say it was on pair with the zoom in the fun department - they sound different, but one doesn't sound particularly better than the other.
Then I sold a bunch of stuff and bought an HX stomp. Can't find a single amp on it that inspires me as much as the american sound does - or the zoom did. The amp simulations on the HX just don't sound and feel natural to me. They sound too much like a mic'ed amp, while I feel the Joyo and Zoom felt a little more like a amp in the room.
And I thinhk I prefer the delays and reverbs from zoom (or at least the few I used). I could not find a delay and reverb that I really lke in the HX. I'm using an NuX Atlantic for delay and reverb and I like it bettter than any of the stuff I found in the HX.
I know there is a lot I can tweak in the HX stomp - but the factory defaults are so uninspiring to me that I don't feel like tweaking. The zoom never felt like it needed tweaking unless I was going for a very specific sound.
So I've been using the HX stomp only for modulation and to some utility pedals, like gate and tuner. The Joyo goes in the FX loop with the NuX Atlantic.
I think what really differs this modelers are features like snapshots and customisable switches. For that the HX stomp is great - but it can improve.
I was hoping I would use the HX stomp as an all-in-one solution - but when I try it alone it feels very uninspiring.
The HX stomp doesn't sound bad at all. My point is that "sounds better" is totally subjective. Unless you are having digital clipping, of course.

    • @markrebetzke7693
      @markrebetzke7693 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yo Roger!
I have both the Hotone Ampero Stomp 2 and the Boss Waza Airs. I've also used a mate's Fender mustang micro. Full disclosure - I'm 100% a bedroom/office player and don't need features like John would for live performances etc. There are other options but I'm a hobbiest and haven't ventured too far in.
The Boss Waza Airs are good, but they are not as good as many of the youtubers who claim they are the greatest thing since sliced bread. They sound very good for a wireless solution and probably the best silence practise solution imo. The app sucks, but its not horrible to the point of making me sell these. You only really have 5 amp variations (Flat, Clean, Crunch, Lead, Brown) and the clean is based on a crystal clean roland amp. Also, you can only enable three effects at a time (so you can't really have an OD and modulation at the same time - this is something that hopefully the internet can prove I'm wrong) with the exception of reverb and delay. Everything other than surround for the Gyro's is a complete gimmick imo - it just gets in the way. But, hands down, these are the best solution to sit in the lounge room with a significant other watching TV etc. They seem to get a great tone with little effort - its basically a Katana on your ears if have heard those amps emulation and simulation). Here in Australia they are about $500
The Hotone ampero stomp 2 is incredible for the money. However, the software lets it down (one of the latest kinks I've found is that you can't lower the gain on the Dumble model below 20 without it turning off) and the lack of a community that provides patches etc. (still early though). I've been watching Thommans Hit the Tone series and having good success at replicating those tones. It is my favorite sit at a desk and play guitar when I'm working from home solution. You can also plug the Waza air dongle into the output of this unit and use it wireless). It also sounds awesome through headphones but it has to be a solution where its needs to be put in a room and stay in a room - if that makes sense? The drives/fuzz/distortion isn't great in my opinion so I will keeping my drives on the board but reverb/modulations/delay are totally usable for headphone use. Things to keep in mind, effects where you can clean up based on the guitars pickup volumes don't work great (Fuzzface I'm looking at you). I got my for $800 AUD - but keep in mind you will need to fork out more for decent headphones.
The Fender micro is an awesome bit of kit. Does cleans very well for a headphone amp. I just found there was way too many cables and I wasn't a fan of its interface. $120 AUD - but need decent headphones.
So, if you need portability between rooms etc. the Waza airs are amazing. But if you need something to dig deeper, record, and have endless parameters to fiddle with - the Hotone Ampero 2 is fantastic for my hobby needs. Fender micro is a great cheap unit. I'm sure the Line 6 stuff is quality and you're buying into a fantastic community and UI - the price was just lost on me as I didn't need any of the features which are required to play live. Also, wild-card - a guy I work with loves his Yamaha THR desktop amp.
With most modellers, my opinion and feeling is, that you are getting a fantastic mic'd amp sound - so if you want to sound like the recording, they are brilliant. If you want to sound like a live concert in your bedroom - you can't beat a real tube amp - but for me its a bit like a Ferrari, why buy the car if I'm only going to drive it 20 km per hour?
Its so refreshing to see youtubers likes John who give an honest opinion based real world use rather than reading from a datasheet.
Hopefully that helps man, and please don't feel like you need to take my opinion on any of this - I've lost days to researching all the above so I know the pain :)

The fact that they are this close, despite the ampero cost being 1/5 of the fractal, and the fact that you can actually fit the ampero in any guitar case or gig bag, makes it an incredible product. That said the ampero sounded better and more amp like IMHO. While in the mix I could go either way, but without the backing track the Ampero sounds better, tje frecuency response being closer to what I expect to hear from a guitar amp. In this comparison, with this particular sound, I think the ampero wins it, regardless of the price point.

As for this comparison, and the opening A & B thing.. well..I preferred the A, but the B has got a nice tone, when ..just.. above the edge of breakUp.
But , you know.. the brain accommodates A LOT , with Audio..so after 1 min or so..as long as the tone is good enough, you get comfort from it. I reckon that ..for Live stuff, one needs a very Solid unit. The tones are a bit secondary, because all brands have good enough tones, for one to enjoy, these days.
At home, like you, one often turns to Software, so.. it all comes.down to the system one prefers to use.
Hotone have got a great combo package,.between unit and desktop Software.
I.just wish they had a Looper that was Save&Load capable.
That's the reason I am.looking at getting an MX5, currently.

People LOVE the simplicity and tones with the Ampero II. Sit down, plug in and pull up patches on a clear, bright, modern touchscreen. This is where Fractal needs to improve. A bit too complex and too many options. Sorry, and bless his soul but I do not have 10+ hours to watch Cooper Carter teach me a master class. The best tech, like phone simply works. It is intuitive. Hotone nailed it and they are on to something big. Now if they will only release the III with more DSP and bring the drums back, I will snatch one up before you can say FMxxx.

I spent a good few weeks trying to create some presets, downloaded patches and IRs, chatted with some really helpful people who knew loads more about it than me, and still ended up very frustrated. My band mates hated the harshness of the tones (as did I). I tried a couple of different FRFR cabs too, but seemed to get the best tones going into the main input (not effects return) of my amp, leaving the amp and speaker modelling switched on in the AA12, which flies in the face of received wisdom.
I’m back to an analogue pedalboard now. Anyone want an AA12?!! Uk only…
