  • For technique tips today, we discuss frappé which means "to strike". Frappé is the basis for many petit allegro jumps in the center of ballet class, and there are different ways to execute this step. The more classical RAD training requires a flexed foot while Balanchine training uses the wrapped position of sur le cou-de-pied. Hope this tips help you!

    You tip about keeping it contained by only thinking of working from the knee down is very helpful, however don't forget the turnout when you move back from frappe front to the starting position. many students move only the foot back after frappe front and leave the knee, thus losing turnout.

    Hitting the floor while doing frappe is common for American ballet school. Russian school technique NEVER hits the floor. So not hitting the floor is not an incorrect technique, it’s a different technique. And it’s also not ballone either.
    The character dance does use the “hitting the floor “ version of frappes, while flexing a foot at could de pied position.

    I'm a 13 year old Dancer that's REALLY interested in ballet and I'm trying to learn more to get better. I have been doing barre work at home to help my balance, strerching to help my flexibility, feet strengthening, practicing tendus, and practicing my preparation for pirouettes and a la seconds and fouettes. I've been doing all of this at home ever since I became really interested in ballet (which was about a month ago) and I'm watching your videos to learn more too. The thing is I can only do what I'm doing at home right now because I'm not eligible to go to Ballet classes. @kathrynmorgan if you can make a video for ballet Dancers who can only be home taught to reply to this comment I would really appreciate it because I really want to be the best ballet Dancer I can be right now even tho I can't take any classses🤒🤒🤒

    • @beautywearsboots6458
      @beautywearsboots6458 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Bianca. yoncé if you are unable to take classes because you aren't finding a studio that offers a class for your age and ability, I encourage you to keep looking. I recently did something similar to do gymnastics as an adult. The most difficult parts of being home taught in anything but especially something like dance or gymnastics are 1) you don't have a trained eye watching you for mistakes and 2) you don't have a trained eye watching you for safety. For example, without proper training it will never be safe to dance on pointe. Keep working hard and getting stronger, but most of all stay safe!

      @SarahArnoldTheAccidentalArtist 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you, Cheryl, for the shout out~ I am actually in the process of formulating a Q & A + some singular technique videos. I usually focus on the how, why and conditioning since that is most helpful to students to actually improve. I assume that they know the basic steps. I have been a ballet teacher for 34 years so I emphasize the actual how to do a step type video less. However, I realize that it is a good idea! :) I appreciate your feedback and enjoy both channels that you mention.

    Vaganova style doesn't strike the floor. It is the same exercise flat or releve which seems to make a lot more sense especially when advanced classes are all on releve. I doubt frappe is just about working on petite allegro jete when there are so many other steps.It is about striking the air with your foot. This keeps you aware of the point as you are doing so many steps where the foot needs to strike out with energy. . When you strike the floor it becomes about that action and working the pointed foot in the air becomes secondary. Of course I think Vaganova is the best training so I am biased.

    Katie, as of the other day, I've quit ballet permanently. It's been my dream for nine years to become a professional dancer, but this past year I've been losing confidence and I've made the decision to quit. I'm really heartbroken, but I wondered if you might have any advice on moving on from this. Love u.

    • @louiselins
      @louiselins 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      missparklez88 I'm not Katie but I offer my advice.
      I know we pursue dreams and sometimes we can't fulfill them like we wanted. You have the world ahead to have other careers and hobbies but dance doesn't need to be just one or another. Is Ballet your passion? When I stopped thinking and getting frustrated to make to a company and focused in dancing it made my life so easier and happier. I improved so much and nowadays that I'm dancing a little less and teaching more I understand that we need to stop making us and students unhappy with ballet. It's a big tool and not everyone will be a company member or a principal dancer but we can enjoy ballet for what it can asks and give us.
      I hope you find peace and be happy for being able to take classes. So many people wish they had had the opportunity to attend a class, to wear shoes, perform onstage and we both did more than that.
      Stay well.

    What if you do Vaganova, russian style? Like the ballonné you showed at first, which you do not have the feet flexed, do I still hit the floor?

    • @kathryn_morgan
      @kathryn_morgan  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      In my experience and training, you are always supposed to strike the floor. Now I never profess to know everything, so maybe it's different in the Vaganova style, but I have always been taught frappe hits the floor. When it doesn't, it becomes a ballonné. But again, Vaganova isn't my specialty!

    • @SaltySugarPlum
      @SaltySugarPlum 7 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Vaganova method does NOT strike. Frappé prepares us for jumps, and it doesn't make sense to drop the level of the leg. the point is to work from the thigh and keep the knee in the same position. dropping the leg to strike the floor is inefficient. balloné accent is IN, frappé accent is OUT.

    • @esstown
      @esstown 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think in order to become a ballone it also requires a plie or a hop on the supporting leg, and yes, usually accents in, not out like in frappe. My new teacher who danced in Russia tells me they don't strike the floor in Vaganova but neither do they strike their jumps. So yes, for them the purpose of frappe is to learn to control the knee independently of the hip joint. Vaganova system also wraps.

    Coupe jete! Yes!!!! Definitely do that next!!! Chasse coupe jete, coupe jete, coupe jete... And so on honestly a nightmare! I can never get height let alone an over split like my regular Grand jetes. And occasionally tend to and the chasse in-between every coupe jete. Which just gets me off the music and all jumbled up! Even if I focus on correct placement, and steps along with only starting with a chasse and not doing it repeatedly. Where is the height? And the over split? No where to be found.... Help XD.

    Hi Katie, I hope you and Eric (and your dogs!) are okay in the face of the approaching hurricane. Please give us a quick update if you can. Big hugs, and stay safe.

    My frappé derrière is not fabulous. And I always lift my toes too much. Overflexed.

    Frappe is also a type of coffee. I just wanted to improve my coffee skills and that's how I stumbled upon your channel a while ago

    Hi! I would love if you'd be able to help me out. I am an adult dancer who started about two years ago. I didn't dance this spring due to an injury, but I will dance this upcoming fall. The problem is, I love ballet, and my dance studio only offers one ballet class and it is for beginners and those who have about 1 year of experience. I don't feel like I'm "too good" for it yet, but I want to be challenged and know that I CAN move on, which unfortunately isn't a possibility at my current studio. The closest dance studio where I may be able to advance is about 1,15 hours away from where I live, and they offer classes 2 times a week. Would that be enough to really develop as a dancer? My dream is to go en pointe, but I know that with the ballet practice I get today, that won't happen. Also, I feel really sad because my biggest and only dream in life is to become a professional dancer but of course that won't happen. Do you have any encouraging words for me, and maybe some advice? Thanks for great videos!

    You might have already done a video on this before, but do you have any tips for Lame Ducks? They feel SO AWKWARD in my body

    I feel so bad for spamming this under all your videos omg but I really hope you see my comment, I wish (pun intended) you would check out wish.com if you don't know it already because you can get SO much ballet stuff there for insane prices, like pointe shoes for 6$, I can't imagine the quality is near good but most of the reviews are good actually - wouldnt it be a fun video to try out some of the ballet stuff they offer for a few dollars and tell us if it's actually good? Because even if it IS cheap many of us can't afford to buy things we don't know are worth it.. Anyways, always love your videos Katie! xx Keep up the great work
