Stone City, Iowa is a 1930 painting by the American artist Grant Wood. It depicts the former boomtown of Stone City, Iowa. It was Wood's first major landscape painting. It is a study of a real place with which Wood was thoroughly familiar, but the landscape has been given fantastical curvy shapes, the trees are ornamental, and the bright surfaces are artificially patterned. The town had been built for its limestone quarries. When the painting was made, the town was in rapid decline due to the development of Portland cement. The painting thus depicts the transition from industrialization and back to rural community. During the summers of 1932 and 1933, the town became the host of the Stone City Art Colony, which Wood was part of Stone City, Iowa was made the same year as Wood's American Gothic and both paintings were successes for the artist. Wood promoted his new style under the label of the "new movement". The painting is located at the Joslyn Art Museum in Omaha, Nebraska. Thank you internet for teaching me this!
Come visit the 1925 Omaha Bungalow to visit the Joslyn. Grant Wood also painted wall size murals throughout the library of my Alma Mater, Iowa State University. Most people just know American Gothic. 🎉
I love it when I get notification of a new thrifting video from you. I am always shocked at how much is in some of your stores. I adore clear glass pieces. I have blue & white calico English china & nothing but clear glass goes with that. Thanks, Mary
The pitcher and the print, for $7.50 each, were fabulous finds! Congratulations, Scott. Thank you for taking us along shopping with you, it is always so much fun.
Impeccable manners you have....returning items exactly back where you found them and not removing price tags. 👏 I must admit that i've opened a couple of bagged up items before to ensure nothing was broken 😂 . I love the conversations you have with the pieces before you decide on buying. ❤ love the print ..Grant was an interesting character; his life would make a great movie.
Scott you are back in fine form after being under the weather for so long, it's obvious you are feeling like yourself again! Your energy is so infectious, this is a fantastic episode of OCS, you flipping out over that pitcher was a riot! Thanks for all you do to bring us along with you and entertain us, what a hardworking man you are! 😂
C'mon Mildred Miller! LOL Enjoyed your rendition of "Buttons & Bows"...put me in the mood to watch an old black & white movie this afternoon 😊 I would love to be able to tap into your wealth of knowledge about glassware when I'm thrifting at my local stores. I learned a lot today and saw several pieces I would have been tempted to take home. Your excitement over the art deco pitcher was contagious...then finding the Grant Wood print! Thank you for sharing the story behind it with us. I like the perspective...looking down from the top of a hill - it would have found a place in my humble apartment for sure! So glad you are keeping it for your bungalow...so long for now.
The ABP cut glass bowl was a heart breaker. It was from one the better maker. Scott, you were distracted by the pink plates at the 2nd store. Right next to them you missed the ABP cut glass carafe!
It's hard to tell if the Grant Wood print just has the red faded. I worked in art galleries for years and poster print shops. The red ink tends to fade more quickly than the other inks in UV light, giving the image a more blue/green tint overall. That's normal, but once you learn that, you can't unsee it. Love the finds overall! I'm regretting getting rid of my sandwich pattern glass when I moved. I'm still working on making my own patterns inspired by glass.
I love tea room! Short production and no repros and it's use in ice cream parlors and tea rooms! What great history 👏 I did clutch my pearls when I saw the pitcher especially in clear 😊
Wonderful to see you feeling so much better! Here in central Indiana the heat and humidity will, they say, stretch on for at least another week. As an octogenarian, I 'll be staying in! The Grant Wood might hang in your bedroom. It needs a space all to itself, I think. In a future video or sale, please make us a pitcher of iced tea In that spectacular tea room pitcher?
My typing teacher was Mrs. Glaspie. She took our class as an opportunity to smoke prior to her lunch. She always told us, "I'll be back, I'm going to get a glass of wudder".
My goodness Scott! What day full of treasures! Do you think that the covered dish is etched M for Murphy???? I think so and it might need to find it's way into my Hutch! ❤❤
The print will look wonderful on the walls of your bungalow, it will make you happy every time you look at it. Great to see you so energized, despite the heat, have a lovely time at the beach. When you were singing Brazil, all I could think of was Carmen Miranda singing it in the Technicolor epic, The Gangs All Here. Carmen at her best! Tut's tomb was discovered in 1922, and I love that desert vase! Have fun!
Wow!!! This was a red letter shopping day Scott! The pitcher and picture are heart attack worthy (but in a good way). The Grant Wood print is a stunner!! Congratulations!
I really thought you were going to dance a jig right there in the isle. I love to see you get that excited. Then the Wood print really stirred you up. The percolator is gorgeous.
Wow! This is how we get totally hooked on hunting for those treasures! What great finds! I've never seen the Pitcher - it's GLORIOUS! The Percolator is very cool! The print, well - that's the chef's kiss of the day - oh, and I'm sure you already know Scott but if that is cardboard on the back of the frame - replace it ASAP with some Acid Free Board. Congrats!
That print is so cool! I also would put that up in my home. I would want to have it professionally redone with the same frame and a new piece of UV glass. You should show us when you get it hung!
Awesome treasures Scott. Loved the deco pitcher and Grant Wood print 🎉🤗Happy Thrifting 😊 Stay cool because…. We’re having a heat wave,a tropical heat wave….☀️🌞🔥
I had a warped egg and I cut down a plastic spoon and wedged it in as a cross piece at the center, put the two pieces back together and just left it for a few weeks and it reshaped itself.
Cool coincidence: That amber depression glass plate you picked up is Patrician (or 'Spoke') by Federal. It's the same pattern as the pitcher you sold last night, lol... Yes, the glowy green '12" sandwich plate' is Roulette by Hocking... Whoop, that Tea Room pitcher is awesomely gorgeous!... Congratulations on finding that original Grant Wood print, the color scheme is beautiful! 🤩
This was a banner haul. I almost always want the ones you’re keeping for yourself. Regarding Grant Wood, have you seen the larger than life sculptures of American Gothic at the Grounds for Sculpture in Hamilton Township NJ? Do you have a picture of yourself dressed for Halloween?
I feel that you were supposed to do this work. So happy for you, love the print & the pitcher. I also love the violin bookends. You teach us all a lot, thanks for all the singing & laughs!!! Stay Cool!
Here in Minnesota it doesn't quit raining. I live in southern MN and we have had 7 inches of rain in June. Humidity is tropical and mosquitoes are blooming in droves!! Went thrifting after work today. Found an antique primitive black painted wooden work box with American applica. Best find of the day for 25 bucks. Someone donated from an estate. Might go back for an Abraham Lincoln print. It was in rough condition but would look good in a patriotic display.
i lived outside the town of eldon iowa for a couple years , home of the house which was in that american gothic painting by Wood. Now i have to not miss the sale of the candlewick!
The printer s CRR, as there’s a larger C around the 2 r’s. Now to find out who that is! I love this painting, such great modernist overtones ie Art Deco.
I had a great day at a flea market. I bought a majolica tea pot and a Hull small vase. Prices were great. Do you find smaller towns have better vintage than the suburbs?
Oh my gosh, the milk glass hand painted piece was gorgeous!!! You find the best stuff! I actually found a Sumida-Gawa Pottery Bowl today 😳 From the late 1800s to about 1920s amazing antique piece and goes for big money so I will list it in my shop. I would have to say this is one of the coolest things I’ve ever found. I was telling my husband we need to go over by you and start shopping😂❤️ Thanks for another great video Scott.
I found a beautiful cut glass bowl. Ran my fingers over it at the goodwill, got home to wash it, big chip! It is cut to clear... I was so mad! But I turned that side to the wall.
Scott, I think messing with sticker on plate ok. They shouldn't put it there on front. Could you explain to them how you feel, mayb they would understand and consider the way they do things and perhaps be ok with you taking it off. I also understand just wanting to move on.
Hey Scott that crystal Tearoom pitcher was a real prize of course. Most likely more desireable in color but did you know the crystal one is much more rare? The Wood print was a keeper for sure.

I think the mark in the lower left hand corner is a circle with the letters crr in it.
I would have freaked as well. I love the colors on that print/lithograph. Frame is perfect. 1930
Grant Wood died in Feb, 1942 at age 50.
Found another print on Etsy. I believe the RR symbol stands for Raymond and Raymond as it is stated on that one.
Wow…. The print and pitcher were amazing!
What amazing finds. The Grant Wood Print is amazing. Please Stay Safe Happy and Healthy Have A Wonderful Day
Oh look…you picked up a casserole with my initial. Why thank you! 😃 Always fun shopping with you. Love your energy.
It’s so fun to see someone get as excited about beautiful glassware as I do!!❤❤❤

The ABP cut glass bowl was a heart breaker. It was from one the better maker. Scott, you were distracted by the pink plates at the 2nd store. Right next to them you missed the ABP cut glass carafe!
You hit the jackpot today!
I have a coffee pot very similar to the one you found; mine has a green glass on the lid. The Grant Wood picture is fabulous.
Looking forward to seeing your table setting complete!

Yep, I’m interested in the covered Pyrex dish with the engraved “M”. I’ll be watching for it in your eBay store for sure.
Great finds. I'm in Illinois and we've been having the 90's for the past four days and we aren't done.
The Grant Wood Print is from his painting of Stone City, Iowa. It's my FAVORITE Grant Wood Painting.

Crazy hot here. I need to move back to Minnesota.
Candlewick was my mom's wedding crystal in 1955
You should have bought that bad marriage, Scott. It looked to be a D & M Sandwich round butter lid on an elegant bowl.
I need the M bowl!! And the candlewick coasters.
Cool just saw a matching waffle iron to your coffee percolator at the North Ellsworth Auction house in Ellsworth Maine for this Sunday auction 😗
Your clear tea room pitcher sold for $200.00. I looked it up on WP.
