Amazing how quickly we can relearn the skills of our predecessors. These structures were created by the landowners. No stonemasons were called. Maybe just a neighbor who had some experience and willing to assist in the project. I’m impressed with your dedication and willingness to tackle these tasks.

I'm a baby boomer from the United States. I wish my generation had considered an "off-the-grid" life. The American dream requires an intense focus on advancement. i don't regret my life choices but I love watching this; it inspires me. I'm adopting "bits and bobs" into my vocabulary.
Just remember... Toby had many, many years with no hoof care, and should have been gelded when he was young... Your being responsible animal owners, and even though it tugs the heart strings... many of us who have been on the land, understand... you have had to accommodate the fact that Toby had not been handled, and possibly trained not to have hoof care... Its a learning curve, and its the emotions that catch up when the unknown happens. You're doimg a wonderful job... and many will learn from your experience too! Good rule of thumb is to expect the unexpected! Perhaps a rude awakening after a much needed holiday! Love the progress on your historic stone house... Keep up the good work!!! You’re doing a great job as a new equine partner. Please don’t be too hard on yourself. It a learning curve and you are well along it. I realize this comment is well after the fact but if you use hydrogen peroxide on the wound area it will soften the wound and allow the dressings to be removed with more ease. I haven’t read every comment so you may already know this. If so, please forgive my repetition. The place is looking absolutely amazing! Well-done you all!
Becky, you are only human. He will forget about it. When we first moved over, we got a pony. We had to get him gelded. The vet threw his manhood into the bushes. I was sitting knitting, and our Jack russell Floss just plonked Roscos manhood at the side of my chair. I screamed, my husband got rid. Missed you last week. You both are doing a sterling job. I think it's hysterically funny how guys all identify with an animal being gelded. They all cross their legs and bend over like they're trying to protect their own jewels. Poor Toby. Normally I enjoy watching Sam work the stone But I must admit today I did want to find out how Toby was doing. Sam are you doing a concret morter for the blocks or lime I don't believe you have said.. Loved seeing Toby calling the dog over and the dog going over just goes to show he does want company. Don't worry about crying Bec most equistian owners have been through the night sitting in the barn worrying our selves to death normally with blankets and a thumos of hot tea. Tobys a tough old bird he will be fine
Ahh Toby is doing much better thankfully. He still isn't himself but that's to be expected. It was a very stressful time. Nell always rushes over when he shouts its so lovely to see. I believe Sam used cement mortar for the block work, but I could be wrong.
Sam, what a great job you are doing on the stonework.i know it much better so hard to do, but you will be a professional at this by the time you finish your home. Maybe, another career? lol just kidding. But it’s nice to have that in your pocket to help others and for repairs around the house. With all of the animals you are adding you certainly are getting your own little farm started there. Lucky animals to get such a loving family.

I believe donkeys do bleed more than horses in this situation, so try not to worry too much. You have definitely done the right thing and are setting him up to be a happier donkey in the future when he feels more sociable due to you making this difficult decision. The stone you put on top of the lintels looks great ! Nice to see the whole family involved ! Gelding should have been done when Toby was younger ,so it makes it harder the older they get ! But hoping Toby and everyone is ok ! The buildings have come a long way and are looking better and better each week !
Yes it's definitely more of a risk as they get older. He was used for stud so never gelded. Hopefully he will get less aggressive now towards other donkeys. I really hope so otherwise it will feel all in vain. 🤞

What an amazing job Sam you are doing so well you should be proud of your work. You are a lovely family who love each other dearly it is so heart warming to observe how much you help and care for each other.
Your building is really coming along nicely. Great improvements and orchard and more animals. Toby will heal never fear he knows you love him . Halter him and give him treats and a walk so he doesn’t expect discomfort every time his halter is on.
You certainly deserve a break this weekend, after all the trauma of the last few days. Toby has very likely received more love and care with you than he's ever known. So please don't beat yourself up. It's like taking our kids to the dentist, isn't it? We know it's for their health and welfare but it still makes you feel awful for them. The house in the background is looking fantastic and the stone and limework are really showing off your hard work and persistence. Go enjoy the good weather now, while it lasts, and be sure to get the biggest ice creams you can find.

Yes it will be had for Donkey at first but it will be for the best...I know with dogs it take a while for his manhood to change...Toby is loud as my dog was asleep snoring big time your Donkey yelled he woke up and I told him it's just Toby on Utube... Toby will get more love from your family and a new Donkey to play with...My heart goes out to U and Toby...I hope U get some painkillers and antibiotics for him aswell... Hi Karen. Toby could wake the dead! Be thankful you don't live near us lol. He has had lots of antibiotics and pain killers but we will keep him topped up. Thanks it was so nice what Sam said..such a surprise when I was editing! He is a very loving person. Toby is definitely clever! He can be a monkey but we do love him to bits. The guinea pigs are just the best thing that happened here for the kids. They love them. I had them as a kid and the sounds bring nack so many good memories. . The noises are so sweet. ♥️
Toby will be fine. The more he moves around the better as it will help keep swelling down and keep it draining. Also the soles of his feet are bound to be sore if he hasn't been done in a long time. Spraying his feet with a strong iodine or if you can get Venice of turpentine to put on his soles it will help toughen up his feet. You'll be amazed how fast he will heal. Hang in there. You will both get through this.
Thanks that's interesting. I'll look into that. He will not let me near his feet, though. The poor farrier had his work cut out with him! We were all sweating by the end.

That tie-wire or tie-band is wonderful. I know the donkey likes company - I just keep remembering that here in the NC mountains (USA), a donkey will protect horses and sheep from bears, wolves, etc. but you really don't see those vermin there, do you? Oh, well, he will keep you alerted to anything that moves, I guess. But your border collie will be your guard as well! Take good care of yourselves because there are no more of you anywhere! Dear Rebecca, your deep motherly love for precious Toby is obvious, no mom wants to cause pain but sometimes it is necessary for future good. I realize this comment is well after the fact but if you use hydrogen peroxide on the wound area it will soften the wound and allow the dressings to be removed with more ease. I was sitting knitting, and our Jack russell Floss just plonked Roscos manhood at the side of my chair. I screamed, my husband got rid. Missed you last week. You both are doing a sterling job. Normally I enjoy watching Sam work the stone But I must admit today I did want to find out how Toby was doing. Sam are you doing a concret morter for the blocks or lime I don't believe you have said.. Loved seeing Toby calling the dog over and the dog going over just goes to show he does want company. Don't worry about crying Bec most equistian owners have been through the night sitting in the barn worrying our selves to death normally with blankets and a thumos of hot tea. Tobys a tough old bird he will be fine
Ahh Toby is doing much better thankfully. He still isn't himself but that's to be expected. It was a very stressful time. Nell always rushes over when he shouts its so lovely to see.
I believe Sam used cement mortar for the block work, but I could be wrong.
He said in the "lost 200-year window" video that he's using lime mortar, rather than Portland Cement.
Sam, what a great job you are doing on the stonework.i know it much better so hard to do, but you will be a professional at this by the time you finish your home. Maybe, another career? lol just kidding. But it’s nice to have that in your pocket to help others and for repairs around the house.

It just shows what a huge heart you have Bec, so don't be embarrassed because you get emotional. I hope Toby will be fine and don't worry, his trust won't be broken I'm sure. I believe donkeys do bleed more than horses in this situation, so try not to worry too much. You have definitely done the right thing and are setting him up to be a happier donkey in the future when he feels more sociable due to you making this difficult decision. The stone you put on top of the lintels looks great ! Nice to see the whole family involved ! Gelding should have been done when Toby was younger ,so it makes it harder the older they get ! But hoping Toby and everyone is ok ! The buildings have come a long way and are looking better and better each week !
Yes it's definitely more of a risk as they get older. He was used for stud so never gelded. Hopefully he will get less aggressive now towards other donkeys. I really hope so otherwise it will feel all in vain. 🤞
A year from now when Toby is in the field with a friend or two you'll get to see why you went through this.

You certainly deserve a break this weekend, after all the trauma of the last few days. Toby has very likely received more love and care with you than he's ever known. So please don't beat yourself up. It's like taking our kids to the dentist, isn't it? We know it's for their health and welfare but it still makes you feel awful for them.

The guinea pigs are just the best thing that happened here for the kids. They love them. I had them as a kid and the sounds bring nack so many good memories. . The noises are so sweet. ♥️
Toby will be fine. The more he moves around the better as it will help keep swelling down and keep it draining. Also the soles of his feet are bound to be sore if he hasn't been done in a long time. Spraying his feet with a strong iodine or if you can get Venice of turpentine to put on his soles it will help toughen up his feet. You'll be amazed how fast he will heal. Hang in there. You will both get through this.
Thanks that's interesting. I'll look into that. He will not let me near his feet, though. The poor farrier had his work cut out with him! We were all sweating by the end.

That tie-wire or tie-band is wonderful. I know the donkey likes company - I just keep remembering that here in the NC mountains (USA), a donkey will protect horses and sheep from bears, wolves, etc. but you really don't see those vermin there, do you? Oh, well, he will keep you alerted to anything that moves, I guess. But your border collie will be your guard as well! Take good care of yourselves because there are no more of you anywhere!
