Unintentional ASMR in film: The Ninth Gate (Johnny Depp)

  • Who knew that two old men discussing a book on hell would be so relaxing!
A spectacular ASMR scene from the Johnny Depp/ Roman Polanski film The Ninth Gate where a pair of twins give their opinion of The Ninth Gate book. These guys REALLY love books!
I don’t own this. All rights go to the respective film companies.

Bro this movie is an ASMR treasure trove. The scene when he visits Portugal where the guy with the shrinking personal library compares the two copies of the book with each other... that one is so awesome. And honestly, I've listened to Polanski's commentary many times too, because he has a lot of good production anecdotes about this movie and tells it all with a soothing accented voice :)

The two old men surnames are Ceniza which translates as "ashes". Interesting that the brother that smokes drops ash on to the book and wipes it away. The other connection is that the author of the book was burned at the stake.

One of the best movies I've ever watched. Notice one interesting fact that Corso is the only one who went through the danger described in a book (the collapsing scaffolding), but it also signified that he did not acquire the missing engraving (9th-last one).
He was also the only one who saw or was a part of the situation shown in an engraving in the book (saw his friend hanging upside down, dealing a killing blow to Balkan as he was praying, being ridden by the woman, etc.) - all nine gates of hell. The were also 9 deaths in the movie.
Question is, did Corso succeed in the end or was he deceived by the master of deception?
The movie is filled with mystery, deep and full of symbols, while the soundtrack is mesmerizing.
In my opinion, film is underrated.

In this scene in particular, I always remembered how great everything sounded and how I could "watch" it with my eyes closed. . Polanski movies in general are a treasure trove. Chinatown Nicholson searching in the Hall of Records, walking on pavement and crumpling up the paper from his windshield and winding watches, click clacking a coffee cup and reading a newspaper, Ghostwriter Ewan McGregor cleaning out the dresser and finding the envelope, many scenes of riffling pages and going through mail in a mailbox, footstep sounds, click clacking on a laptop...Bob Ross and Polanski served me well for years prior to ASMR exploding. Also All the Presidents Men and Parallax View by Alan Pakula..

The deep baritone of the brother's voices (especially the one on the left) causes the feeling of relaxation which you call ASMR. What the sound of their voice is, is a tiny bit of the AUM sound, at the correct pitch, which Tibetan and other monks access to enter what I call "underwater". It is an entering into another dimension. One can feel it instantly (if one hears the AUM at the right pitch) and the feeling goes all through one's spine (through the chakras). One's perception is also altered, and one sees that the Earth, the trees, the animals (if any are around) are all in this dimension permanently, and are all worshipping God while in this state. That's what I consider it to be, anyway-worshipping God. The creation didn't fall, you know.
This state is unnoticed by humans because we aren't exposed to the AUM much, and have no idea there is another dimension of which we aren't aware, accessed by means of a sound which I consider to be something like God's voice. I didn't enter this state alone-a friend facilitated it by making the AUM sound and when he hit the right pitch, we automatically entered "underwater". He knew about this sort of thing. The "underwater" feeling is more intense than the ASMR feeling, the ASMR feeling being a small hint of the AUM experience.
Some months after this occurrence, I was visiting a zoo and for some reason decided to worship God as nature does. I "centered" myself (lined myself up) on a huge Redwood stump (this was in California) and let my arms and hands go down to my side, in a relaxed position, with the palms open. And I looked up. A huge animal-I think it was an elk- standing inside the fence apparently knew what I was doing, because he or she raised his/her head straight up, making a "one" with his/her neck, and looked up with me. We all, the stump, the elk, and I worshipped God together. Any Tibetan monk would know exactly what I'm talking about, although they may know it by a different name.

2:16 when he talks about Venetian craftsmanship and the "pages resistant to the passage of time," what does he mean when he says "none of your modern ' boot pulp' " or "boot bug" (subtitles) ?? what does it indicate about the book itself?
okay I noticed he says the "finest rock paper," paper actually made from stone, instead of tree pulp.

Hahaha I originally thought he said “not even your mother would part” but i think it’s “book pulp”. He’s slandering the quality of modern books

He says "none of your modern wood pulp" Wood pulp is nowadays widely used in making paper. It is very cheap, but most of low quality and doesn't hold on its own for a long time.

Would the French film La Cercle Rouge (1970) be considered an ASMR film? I just now looked up what ASMR is and that's the first film I thought of. It seems I like these types movies. I get so much comfort in watching older quieter films.
