Pens, ink, stationary and other writing supplies. You have people that get 1 pen and 1 bottle of ink in blue/blue-black/black and are set. Then you have people like me with 10+ pens and over 30 bottles of ink with different colors, properties and manufacturers. And I started around October.
Bic pens aren't bad though. You could do worse. I also love using them for drawing, you can easily go for light to dark by varying the pressure you use.

I first noticed I would get ASMR when my grandfather would tell me a story while flicking through a newspaper or something. But as years have gone by I too get the sensation mostly when someone is providing me with a service, whether its selling an item or their services in general. Luckily it's a huge part of my career that I deal with people offering me their services regularly :D become something I look forward to in my work life. Edit: A recent example was choosing a branding specialist for a project and having different candidates pitching me their service/package. Was especially prominent with that particular project. I should start documenting it really lol.
The fountain pen community is such a wholesome one at times like this. You don’t need to spend a lot, and as my local fountain pen store owner says, everybody deserves a good pen. Even if a fountain pen isn’t for you, I feel having a writing instrument you love is beautiful. We will lose the art of writing if all we and those after us know are disposable pens of poor quality who make your hand hurt. There’s so much more magic that can characterize a pen than just being a tool.
He is so passionate and that makes me happy. I feel so comfortable watching this and even though it is something I've never cared about, hearing him talk grabs my interest and i become so fascinated in what he is saying.
As someone who lives in American, there is a level of entitlement among customers. Not saying all customers, but a mentality of “a customer’s always right” has been polluted. It was supposed to mean that a customer always knows what they want. Now it just means that even if a customer is totally wrong about a policy or item, the managers will more than likely just cave.
The irony is that both the fountain and ballpoint pen were invented outside of Asia, with the latter's design taking many decades (if not, near a full century) to be understood by the Japanese. To their credit, they incorporate and covet goods things, even if the invention is not their own. The salesman and how he conducts himself and his boutique clearly demonstrates this.
I also love their attention to detail when selling or showcasing products. Every fine detail is revealed with the utmost charm. Always a great experience.
I like the fact that in Japan they have a serious way to deal with every profession. In my country someone selling pens wouldn't bring such deep realizations and advices. It's beautiful to watch this

Exactly, it's what suits you as well as anything else. It's like the guy behind the counter said - fountain pens are mainly used for work offices whereas fountain pens are used for relaxing writing more than anything.
@@davidmayes4212 Absolutely, fountain pens last ages if cared for, clean and refill, my first one is a vintage one from 1947 and other than being refurbished with new rubber gaskets for the vacuum plunger it's essentially good as new because it's been cared for and it was made well in the first place.
I hate bic, whenever I get a bic pen it has terrible ink flow, or just not the type of flow of ink that I like. I like the ooly splendid fountain pen, because it has a great feel and a nice grip.

From what I can tell, the biggest issue with badly written Japanese is incomplete/unconnected strokes in characters. Imagine if someone wrote a "b" but the little hump was disconnected from the line.
I like how he works within the confines of what the customer wants. He's not trying to upsell on something expensive. He just wants the man to have the best option for what he needs. Not many salespeople do that

Fountain pens are really good for learning to write in Japanese; they're a better fit for the writing style the characters were originally designed for than a ballpoint pen. I always used one when I was first learning.
I've been coming back to this periodically. The guy gets me every time especially when he's looking in the case to pick which ones to showcase he appears to take good care in choosing what he thinks would suit the customer best!
One of my first asmr experiences were in a situation similar to this. Many years ago, in an electronics store. The lady had the most soothing voice and was showing me different products. I could have stayed there for hours just listening to her talk. So relaxing. There wasnt a name for it back then tho.
Such a pleasure to watch a master in action. Confident in his products, courteous and proud. How I wish there were more shops working on this basis, where the customer feels valued, and where the expert gives of his time and knowledge, freely.
Reminds me of when I was buying a bed with my wife in Japan. The store assistant sat us down at a desk to give us mattress options and explain the benefits in a suuuuuper softly spoken voice. The same thing happened when we were buying a TV in a different shop and I almost fell asleep. The customer care in Japan is very good.
Buy a cheap one (I'd recommend the Lamy Safari or Pilot Metropolitan) and see if you like it. In my case, my handwriting looks noticeably better when I write with a fountain pen, as you don't have to press down all the time like with a ballpoint. Plus when you write more because you enjoy it your handwriting will get more consistent. That all being said, who cares about how your writing looks if it is easily readable or only meant for yourself?
Second this!! The Pilot Metro is great starter pen that can be had for less than $20. It comes with a an ink cartridge to get you started and a converter. Although the converter is the sac type and doesn't hold much ink, it allows you to choose ink colors that you just can't get in a cartridge. I probably would win a The Most Crappy Hand Writing contest, and I use a fountain pen for every day writing. It's so much more enjoyable than your every day ball point and just glides across the page. Not to mention you dont need to press so damn hard. One of the best purchases I have made!

For someone asking “who would pay 92 usd for a pen” it’s all about the use they’re getting out of it and how much that more expensive tool will make writing more enjoyable. It’s like paying 10 or 100+ dollars on a keyboard

Exactly, it's what suits you as well as anything else. It's like the guy behind the counter said - fountain pens are mainly used for work offices whereas fountain pens are used for relaxing writing more than anything.

@@davidmayes4212 Absolutely, fountain pens last ages if cared for, clean and refill, my first one is a vintage one from 1947 and other than being refurbished with new rubber gaskets for the vacuum plunger it's essentially good as new because it's been cared for and it was made well in the first place.
This video is what got me into fountain pens. Dude wasnt even selling it to me yet still got me invested.

I hate bic, whenever I get a bic pen it has terrible ink flow, or just not the type of flow of ink that I like. I like the ooly splendid fountain pen, because it has a great feel and a nice grip.
@@ETN-bh1qb Yeah it always decides to just stop flowing ink into the ballpoint, I hate it. Unlike a fountain pen which is perfect once you get a hang on how to use it.

From what I can tell, the biggest issue with badly written Japanese is incomplete/unconnected strokes in characters. Imagine if someone wrote a "b" but the little hump was disconnected from the line.

Fountain pens are really good for learning to write in Japanese; they're a better fit for the writing style the characters were originally designed for than a ballpoint pen. I always used one when I was first learning.
Never really tried and honestly never really used a fountain pen either but I am curious as to what it is like.

I've been coming back to this periodically. The guy gets me every time especially when he's looking in the case to pick which ones to showcase he appears to take good care in choosing what he thinks would suit the customer best!

I could watch and listen to both of these gentlemen for hours. Gentility and respect are to be cherished and seem so rare these days it’s mesmerizing.
One of my first asmr experiences were in a situation similar to this. Many years ago, in an electronics store. The lady had the most soothing voice and was showing me different products. I could have stayed there for hours just listening to her talk. So relaxing. There wasnt a name for it back then tho.
In the eighties it was called 'tripping out' , in the nineties it was something emo kids did and in late nineties it begun to be called ASMR.
Testing a pen in a practical manner. Write your name, your city, test the pen in a practical situation. This dude is smooth as silk with the pitch.

Reminds me of when I was buying a bed with my wife in Japan. The store assistant sat us down at a desk to give us mattress options and explain the benefits in a suuuuuper softly spoken voice. The same thing happened when we were buying a TV in a different shop and I almost fell asleep. The customer care in Japan is very good.

Buy a cheap one (I'd recommend the Lamy Safari or Pilot Metropolitan) and see if you like it. In my case, my handwriting looks noticeably better when I write with a fountain pen, as you don't have to press down all the time like with a ballpoint. Plus when you write more because you enjoy it your handwriting will get more consistent. That all being said, who cares about how your writing looks if it is easily readable or only meant for yourself?

Second this!! The Pilot Metro is great starter pen that can be had for less than $20. It comes with a an ink cartridge to get you started and a converter. Although the converter is the sac type and doesn't hold much ink, it allows you to choose ink colors that you just can't get in a cartridge.
I probably would win a The Most Crappy Hand Writing contest, and I use a fountain pen for every day writing. It's so much more enjoyable than your every day ball point and just glides across the page. Not to mention you dont need to press so damn hard.
