- The Ceniza Brothers mysteriously disappeared at the end of the film. In this video, we examine theories based on the film and its script.
The Ninth Gate (1999) was co-written, produced, and directed by Roman Polanski and starred Johnny Depp as Dean Corso. The film is loosely based upon Arturo Pérez-Reverte's 1993 novel The Club Dumas.

I didn't realise it was the same actor playing both young and older twins. My theory is they know the secret of the ninth gate, they actually make themselves younger every few decades and they are hiding in plain sight as book sellers and repairmen.
and they are the only reason he found the real engraving, if they hadnt tipped over the bookcase he wouldve never found it, it's like they handed it to him while appearing indifferent.
@@joejones9520 true - I agree with this theory. Which gives way to interesting speculations. The twins - or one of them at least - are shown as angels guarding the way. Are they fallen angels, ensuring only "valid" candidates walk this road? And is their manipulation their way of making sure only those "worthy" actually reach the gate? Are they then in league with the demon lady, the obvious "helper" sent by the devil himself to ensure his "best candidate" reaches his destination?
OR are they actual angels, doing god's will - making sure the "right" candidate gets to join the devil in hell. Does that mean the devil is a natural part of god's creation, as actually hinted at in the bible? That Satan is working for god, and that god HELPS to make sure only those "worthy" get to join his "employee's" crew? Not those that should either be in heaven or burn in hell?

I find it ironic that the brothers are named after two apostles, Peter and Paul, and that they acquired and sold a book on the devil all while living and working in the holiest city in Spain. Toledo was not only the capitol of Visigothic Spain (ending in the year 711), but it was made the capitol again after it was reconquered by Alphonso VI in 1085. It was made the ecclesiastical capitol of Catholic Spain (and still is today) when the top Cardinal took up residence there. Everything that can be said about Catholic Spain takes its cue from Toledo, not Madrid, Santiago de Compostella, Barcelona, Sevilla, or any other place. Hence the expression, "Holy Toledo."
By your logic, the holiest city should be Mole, hence, “holy mole!”

This is one of the all time greatest movies ive ever seen. It reminds me alot of Chris Nolans "The Prestige", where the events happening offscreen that you dont see are more important than what youre actually watching. Youre left to connect some dots on your own.
Only thing that kinda sucked was the ending

@@joejones9520 yes I agree. How do you make a concrete ending to a movie like this? Anything concrete would not have worked no matter what the makers tried.
I was so pissed when I watched it for the first time.
I would not compare it to the prestige in that I own that film and have viewed it many many times since it’s release, and everything down to the most minute details is perfectly laid out for the audience, it’s just that (similar to a magic trick) the film used cuts back and forward, out of chronological order in which they occur, to disorient and distract the audiences with an overwhelming about of information, the way magicians overwhelm the “keen” senses of their audience with stage effects and misdirections.
But revisit it once or twice and you’re bound to find every answer you’re looking for (except for the “prestige” trick, that was pure science fiction and meant to be evidently so)
In the ninth gate, there is *far* more subtlety and nuance, and many things are simply left for the viewer to decide/decipher/interpret, with no clear cut “this is what happened exactly point for point, irrefutably” synopsis available and to this day I’ve heard several different but equally compelling interpretations of the ninth gate.
I hear it’s being remade like as of late last year, with Roman Polanski directing and Johnny Dep starring/producing
If you listen close, the twins do not finish each others sentences, they say the same things but in different ways. "It was a good buy - it was a good sale!".
My theory: The Ceniza brothers were angels (good ones). They intentionally sold their copy to Balkan with the false engraving knowing it would ultimately lead to his doom - as well as the dooms of everyone else associated with the various copies (self-proclaimed satanists). The fall of the scaffolding was a warning to Korso not to pursue the book or engravings any further. If he was as smart and learned as he appeared, he would've made the connection of the brothers' warning and the engraving showing the arrow being shot from the heavens. As it turns out, he did make the connection later but chose to continue his mission anyway, ignoring the warning.
As for the ending, I think the brothers were slain/vanquished/sent back to Heaven by "The Woman" (assuming she was either the devil or a fallen angel/demon). She was the one who told Korso where to find the final (real) engraving at the end, probably after she figured it out (somehow) and gone there to deal with the brothers. She could've given the engraving to Korso herself, I guess, but that wasn't her M.O. throughout the film. Plus, I think it was necessary for him to find it himself in order for the ninth gate prophecy to be fulfilled.
Great insight, I agree. The woman can´t give the last engraving because to be a moral decision Corso needs to willingly follow the path.

Well they sold it to Mrs Telfer, not Balkan. He bought it from Telfer. Otherwise id agree with ur theory but it has a tiny mistake in it.
@juripfeifer7970 good point - my mistake. Although, I think the "chain of doom" theory still holds up regardless, as she was the ringleader of the satanic cult... And she's killed by Balkan at the end anyway, leading to the same outcome.
@@mitchellwooldridge5118 Well on of my theorys is that Corso is presented as the demonic dragon creature thats shown on in the last engraving. Like he was destined to return to the Kingdom of Shadows. Cause on the engraving the Girl is "riding" the dragon creature with a book in her hands in front of the burning castle, just like she rid corso in front of it later. Even hes constant smoking and breathing it out through his nose is a bit a hint in my opinion. Ur thoughts on that?
There are 2 things I noticed the last time I saw the film, one very funny where you see hanging on the wall of a posh Parisian building a huge Shell sign (obviously another need to make one of the film's sponsors appear), it's quite improbable and funny.
The other thing is the fact that in the Ceniza brothers you can clearly hear the sound of a fly just as the name Lucifer is spoken. ( Belzebuth literally means his majesty of flies). I liked this wink in the film. This film is so rich.
The shell sign suggests sun worship. Appears once more at the end when he pumps gas.

The Ninth Gate's been my favorite film for years, and I've never even known, or considered some of these things. I never liked the Ceniza brothers, because of that Doppelganger dynamic they had. But it makes a lot more sense now...
I've personally thought the Ceniza brothers weren't necessarily there to help Corso, but that it's all the other stuff the girl is doing that ultimately leads him to open that door. (like finding the ninth engraving)
I understood it to be that they knew the secret of the Ninth Gate, but they took precaution enough that neither someone like him, nor Balkan, would ever be able to make it work. (hence the counterfeit page) And that either he'd be killed when he tried it, or be met with catastrophe along the way. And perhaps the Devil was finally able to overcome their efforts...
In the original book the author plays with the meaning of the surname 'Ceniza' (= ashes), connecting it with what probably awaited the villain who used the engraving forged by them (flames of Hell, or the 'certain kind' of Devil). Here the director had paved Corso's way to the Ninth gates from the very beginning, they also had guided him, just like others. Interesting, thamks!
Cenizas are the only ones who smiles cheerishfully in the movie: they feel safe knowing the book is harmless after forging a fake 9th-ritual page.
But they didn't destroy the original 9th-ritual page, and instead hidden it carelessly. This made me examine another theory: that both two aren't angels, but instead the devil's gatekeepers for hell, and the hidden paper is one kind of test. When they smile so happy in 4:44, it's something like they're thinking "here's another unexpert sheep, oblivious of what is going to do" OR "here's another candidate for trespassing the door to Hell" (like presumably did of Liana Telfer too years prior)

At 5:22 of your video cineG , there is an engraving of the angel with the bow. At the top of that page there is a Roman numeral 3 or 111. The same 111 green eyes marked him with on the forehead in blood. Now I see how important that mark was because it was the last engraving.
I became addicted to this film after it came out on VHS in 2000 or something. I still have it on DVD don't watch it anymore, It's such a mysterious puzzle and really pays off. I never thought about the Cenizia brothers in the way you have here. Interesting! Polanski altered the same basic script for The Gjhost Writer with Ewan MacGregor. I could track the whole thing.
The Ceniza Brothers were not dead or ghosts. They were Angels.
Mustached Angels. They almost killed him with the scaffolding.
Since that failed AND he bravely returns, Corzo proves worthy to receive the missing page.
They were the most alive people in the movie. Everyone else was half dead.
Bravely returns? He got the clue to come back to their shop directly from the Girl. She, whatever she might be, wanted him to get that last engraving. Who else did he have to fear, btw, with Balkan dead and all true Lucifer's engravings with him?.. He only had to walk down this road, to the end, that's all.

@@pookiesis1465 haha your first line reminds me of the tv show Good Omens. I LOVE your theory so you might like this show as well. Great conclusion not many point to but great when a smart person does or at least out of box thinker with creative flare for solving mysteries.
Few movies creep my out but The ninth gate did.
The engraving of the angel with mustache clears makes it seems there angels of death or angels that work for the devil. Why would they know so much about The Ninth Gate if they weren't angels or undead people you couldn't see ?

This was very interesting and informative, thx. Those two were for me the most mysterious characters in the movie.
Perhaps there’s another possibility going off just the film. If the brothers feared for their lives and found out the other book owners were dying like flies they may have gone into hiding and they may have been those very same workmen/twin movers at the end of the film. One smokes one doesn’t just like before and it’s the same actor - perhaps they were there before and were closing their shop and trying to run while undercover as basic movers to protect themselves?
I always assumed they didn’t want to get killed and escaped.
Which explains the empty shop, not so much that it’s completely empty but if your on the run, you don’t need a store anymore. Plus we saw many were killed over the books and their pages. I always assumed no supernatural aspect to them.
I always thought that the first two Ceniza brothers were Angels and then the two at the end were “devils” because they led Corso to finding the “real” engraving page.

my thoughts were, after watching the movie, was that the Brothers died shortly after Corso died. When Corso first visited the shop, the brothers felt, to me, like wise spirits. I was waiting for their sister, a Stygian Witch, to show up, with their one tooth and one eye that all three of them shared.
On the whole I like the theory of the brothers trying to hide and escape Balkan's wrath. They are bachelors, set in their ways, no other family, why would they just leave their workplace?.. On the other hand, in the book their role and motivation are clear, the last page says it all. In the film... why would they remove and replace that page, with no reward for it?.. Your video explained it: Polansky liked them more as supernatural entities! Thanks to him, we all got the chance to see the real original engraving. In the book it proved not to be necessary in the end.

I hadn't thought of that. Nice. I imagined that the power of the book actually fell on the brothers, and that part of this power is being made young again. The deja vue aspect makes more sense and also explains the angel with the moustache nicely.

Love how they seemed to be bragging about how they made the forgery. It would be near impossible..... All the technics that would go into it.... Knowing which parts to take out.... Bragging about purchasing and selling it.
They were just appreciating their own art, laughing to themselves))) And they didn't lie: it takes a real master to copy a masterpiece so well. It was their only pride and joy in life, their art and skills.

Fargas hit the bullseye when he said "Some books are dangerous, not to be read with impunity."
Always interpreted them as also being devil's themselves. Shapeshifters who were one of the last tests and gate guardians for those seeking knowledge and the way of the ninth gate. The forgery was a test and when Corso found it in the end it was being gifted as a reward for being the first worthy.😊
The Ceniza Brothers are essential characters to the film story, and there are no coincidences in the film. They clearly forged the plate, when the girl anointed Corso, she had already given the answer away, and so the Brothers who were some kind of angelic beings (an angel may appear as multiple voices or images) appointed to hide the answer to the riddle in the 3 books no longer had a purpose ( there is no reason to hide the answer to the riddle as it is now known), Polanski is (I believe) purposely vague about who exactly the Ceniza Brothers were working for.
Balkan collects the 9 engravings and treats them like a spell. Corso lives the events in the engravings, doing things unconsciously and gets the just reward. (Whatever it is).
The brothers, themselves, are like the engravings... identical, but with subtle differences. One chain smokes, the other doesn't like the smoke. Other than that, they are the same.

@@darthsilversith667 They are clearly MEANT by Polanski to be twins, because they are played by the same actor, who also played both of the Cenizas. The fact that they give different last names just shows that everything about the Cenizas and their bookshop is downright fishy.

I watched this when it came out but was to young to really grasp what was happening after watching one of these videos i rewatched the movie(a few times) and can conclude its one of the best movies ever in my opinion and one of my top 3
It's hard for me to think the brothers kept the final engraving and just left it on top of a wooden shelf for years and years and years... and not take it with them when they left.
I had always figured that the Ceniza brothers were keepers of the final engraving - which upon having kept it safe until the appointed time, were awarded youth in the end as a reward. Thoughts?

I think they are Imps or lesser devils. May be angels that rebelled. Lucifer was also an angel himself, so it's not farfetched. Also the Girl constantly alludes at her being an angel in disguise, even mocking Corso calling herself his guardian angel. After all, demons ARE angels, just fallen ones.

My theory: (If I get it wrong, sorry) I think The Ceniza Brothers old, and the young movers are one and the same. The business with the ninth gate book is done, so they are leaving.
I like paying attention to what the Ceniza brothers do / do not say about money. Corso sails into their shop asks for their expert opinion, not one penny is exchanged, meanwhile Balkan is paying Corso a ton for his opinion. They also say forging would be expensive but not impossible. There also say the sale to Balkan was a great opportunity but no mention of price. The Ceniza brothers are not doing any of this for the money
If the Ceniza brothers were dead, did telfer sell her copy to them while they were dead? Did Balkan buy the copy when they were dead? Were they even ever alive?!?

They should have made this a part of the supernatural part of the movie.
This movie had great potential but got whimsical with its music and storyline at times that reduced its effort.
Another difference is their glasses. One far-sighted, one near sighted?
One of my favorite films. I interpreted it that the brothers were there to give Corso a bit of help. Once that was accomplished, they returned to Hell.
The Ceniza brothers had finished their task, just as Fargas, the Baroness and Balkan had. When the Devil is done with you, your time is up. I suspect they had an 'unfortunate accident.'

this is the case where the book on which this film is based, is a tangled mess of other plots or stories not associated to the 9th gate, whereas the film concentrates on the puzzle of the gate and characters. Club Dumas is a wierd book of a book broker, and the 9th gate is like a side story.
they weren't dead they moved on to a different place, otherwise why take so long to clear out the shop?? also the workmen could be relatives or friends instructed to say they were dead to keep people from looking for them

The first appearance of the girl was when Balkan mentioned "familiars" that partnered with witches.
why does the first brother drops ash on the book's cover, then? He surely recognized it. As a bibliophile, he surely knows its value, but seems to treat it without any reverence and respect.
Awesome already seen this movie at least twice over the years, so this reveal is truly kismet.
Why did they take one page and forge it ? To prevent anyone from ever summoning the devil . If so , why did they not burn the page after removing it ?

Irrelevant, but i always thought the "Corso is Satan but forgot" theory the most interesting related to the plot.
This movie is very entertaining, but it was a shame how the switch out of of the engraving was totally out of left field, and an audience member couldn't at all predict it. I'm about to sit down and watch this, but I may have seen it before, the one where the analysis hypothesizes the brothers are in fact ghosts. That also didn't resonate with me, despite the ending when they are moving things out, because the movie intentionally skirts outright appeals to the paranormal as an explanation as much as possible (only the girl stands out), and I didn't pick up on any of the hints supporting ghosts at all.

@@LordofDarknessX I actually made a mistake but it’s not the one everyone here thinks I made. After first seeing this video, I went and watched the scene in question from the actual movie. And one of the two men introduces themselves to Corso when he tries to find out what happened to the original book store. Watch a clip of that scene and you will see what I mean. They may have been played by the same actor but that doesn’t mean that he was playing a set of twins again. If they were, they would’ve made an effort to show both of those characters clearly like they did the first set of twins. To really hammer in that they were twins. I think they just had him play both parts again in that scene to save money. I should have mentioned in my comments above that people need to watch an actual clip of that scene to see what I am talking about. When he introduces themselves to Corso, he says two full and very different names. Also.. it is bad practice for a sith lord to take anything anyone says in a video at face value as absolute gospel.. ie, the creator of this video stating that the second set are twins.. they’re not. He however even stated that the script made no mention of those two being twins like it did with the first set. I don’t remember the names of the second set but I will go find out.. brb

Its just as likely that Balkan also killed the brothers to remove anyone who knew too much about the books.

Those brothers don't look like the same actor.
Pedro and Pablo Ceniza -- posing as the pair of movers in the penultimate scene -- conveniently tip that furniture item over when Corso is there to see the dust-covered 9th engraving flutter to the floor. This event is NOT a mere happenstance! They were awaiting Corso's arrival . . . waiting for him to be there to pick up that final engraving at the right moment, when they tipped over that shelf unit. Corso was MEANT to 'discover' that engraving -- having been clued into the fact that it was at the Ceniza Bros. shop where the final clue would be found, as the green-eyed girl (Lucifer) intended all along.
Right…except the green eyed girl isn’t the devil. That would defeat the purpose of the nine gates as a means of summoning the devil. If the devil is there all along, there’s no point to any of it.
@@RC-qf3mp The nine gates were believed -- by Balkan, Kessler, etc. -- to have been designed to allow an acolyte to summon the Devil . . . but they were wrong.
The Devil is starved for love, and She -- yes, the Devil is FEMALE -- played the long game by setting up a system wherein a Seeker could follow the clues She left behind (in those 3 copies of the Book) in order to follow the trail leading to 'union' with Her.
She is seen -- by the Audience, but not by Corso -- descending from above in a kind of reverse-levitation, which clues us in that She is more-than-human. This unnamed 'Green-Eyed-Girl' is NOT a mere human. She may be 'clothed' in a human body, but She is not human.
How does She know that the final 9th engraving is to be found at the Ceniza Bros. shop? She wrote that on the photocopy of the forged 9th engraving, which She left behind tucked under the windshield wiper when She mysteriously disappeared, leaving Corso alone -- alone to make the discovery he NEVER would have made had She not left him that clue. But how could She have known that the original 9th engraving was to be found there, at the Ceniza Bros. shop?
The book -- THE NINE GATES -- was not a means of summoning the Devil. It was a means for the Devil to attract Her longed-for Lover to Her.
Notice that when Corso is examining the Kessler version, he sees a figure in one particular engraving about to be struck from behind by a sword-wielding man . . . and what just HAPPENS to occur next? Corso is conked in the head from behind by SOMEONE whom we, the Audience, never see. Who is it who could have managed to get into Kessler's guarded premises without there having been a caller buzzing in over the intercom? Did Balkan manage to sneak in, knock Corso unconscious, murder Kessler, steal the engravings from the Kessler copy, start the fire, and then LEAVE without Kessler's secretary having known he'd gotten in??? Was it Telfer and/or her right-hand-man??? WHO could have gotten in to do all those things?
The Devil -- the Green-Eyed-Girl -- was the perpetrator of all those deeds. She didn't murder Corso then, of course. That's not what She was after. She was fulfilling the 'prophecy' in that engraving, with Corso being the one struck from behind, like the figure in that engraving -- right at the moment when he himself was looking at that picture and perhaps wondering what it meant -- just as he had to have wondered whether or not his pal, who'd gotten strung up by one leg in his rare books store, was meant to be the 'fulfillment' of the engraving featuring the Hanged Man. Who killed THAT guy? Balkan? Telfer? NO! It was Her, the Devil, fulfilling the 'prophecies' depicted on the LCF engravings interspersed throughout the 3 copies of the Book.
She was the ONLY 'person' who knew to point Corso to the Ceniza Bros. shop after she'd already mated with Corso (following an overt seduction She had instigated -- She having chosen HIM over all others). One might think that as She had already managed to extract his 'seed' during their coupling that She would have no more use for Corso: She had what She needed to produce an Antichrist, the Half-Human/Half-Devil spawn who would play his role in the End-Times drama . . . so what more use would She have for Corso, who had 'fulfilled' those engraved 'prophecies' at her behest?
Love. She LOVES Corso. She points him to the Ceniza Bros. shop, where the Ceniza Bros. themselves are pretending to be a different pair of twins (the workmen) who just HAPPEN to tip over that shelf unit right at the one moment when Corso would be there to see the original 9th engraving flutter to the floor -- because She WANTS Corso to see that picture depicting HER pointing towards the LIGHT emanating from the portal into the castle Balkan had purchased -- the one Balkan taunted Kessler about in that postcard, writing "I saw it first!" Balkan saw a photo of that castle, recognized it as the one from the 9th (forged) engraving in the Telfer copy he'd just bought, purchased that castle, sent Kessler the taunting postcard, had a photo of that castle placed on the wall of the auditorium at his BALKAN PUBLISHING headquarters where Corso -- and the Girl -- attended his lecture, where it can clearly be seen . . . Funny how SHE turns up there, then turns up everywhere Corso happens to be on his Quest, so much so that Corso gets the wrong impression that She works for Balkan.
No. She is ever-present because THIS is the culmination of the Devil's quest to make a 'love-connection' with a mortal man -- a man worthy of Her in that he is the one who, by comparing the 3 copies, will see how Her plan to hide the ONE version inside THREE differing copies -- a parallel or parody of the Trinity, I suppose -- will lead to her union with Man.
She rewards Corso at the end, after having gotten him to 'seed' Her womb, because he was deserving of the 'illumination' that She -- as LCF, as 'Lucifer', the Light-Bearer -- alone could provide. Balkan, had he known what the Devil was really after, would willingly have done Her will, of course, but he had his own preconceptions of What and Who the Devil was. Doesn't Balkan -- and Kessler, too -- refer to the Devil as male? It never occurred to Balkan or Kessler -- or Telfer, or any of the other would-be Satanists indulging in 'hocus pocus' rituals and orgies -- to think that the Devil just MIGHT be Female instead.
Is the Devil really an 'evil' spirit entity? All-the-while these events are playing out, presumably there's a 'God' up in Heaven who knows everything that's going on . . . and He does NOTHING to prevent any of the deaths. God ALLOWS this female Devil to accomplish Her goal of mating with Corso (to produce an Antichrist, most probably) and leading him by that final clue to Enlightenment. Why???
For God so loved the world . . . etc. Maybe the Devil, in Her own way, loves the world just as much and, following God's example, wants to couple with a willing Man -- just as God 'did it' with the Virgin Mary -- to create a diabolical Christ-figure, an Antichrist. Thus, Corso becomes a Mary-figure, and just as Mary was believed -- especially by Catholics -- to have undergone an Assumption into Heaven to become the 'Queen of Heaven', Corso is accepted into the Light at that portal into the burning castle Balkan had purchased, which the engravings had depicted 333 years earlier in 1666.
The Devil . . . She had a Plan of Her own. It was probably She who persuaded Telfer's husband to sell the copy of THE NINE GATES to Balkan -- and then to commit suicide -- in order to get the game started, to start the dominos falling that would lead Corso through the 'prophetic' moments hinted at in the 9 engravings, all the way to the ultimate moment when he -- having been the ONLY person (other than the Ceniza Bros., who were probably demons acting under Her guidance) to see the actual 9th engraving, rather than an 'AT' version or the forgery inserted into the Telfer copy, and finally enter in through that Ninth Gate.
And She did it all for Love!

The short answer i believe is they completed their mission they recruited the Devils partner or whats a male misteress. So i believe they just went home to train him in how to be a saint of hell.

One could argue that the brothers themselves were forgeries.if apparations connected to the devil they became the devils angelic forgeries, bein unable to create authentic angels the devil simply forged his own inauthentic copies.
