one of the small details i loved in this number is that (other than when they're in their shiny outfits) the kids only sing and dance when the Trunchbull has her back to them.

I also never noticed until someone pointed it out. At the very beginning the kids are only dancing when they are out of Trunchbull's sight. Clever choreography! The best choreography I have ever seen

This is why subtitles are so useful and should be included as standard for every movie. I guarantee you are missing at least some of the awesome word play in these songs if you don't watch with subtitles.

She wasn't helping Bruce, in that part of the movie Matilda hadn't discovered the power to move things yet (im Brazilian, srry for bad english)

I think in my opinion, is that Matilda actually awakened (if that was the right word) her powers when she first met Ms. Honey because she suddenly came up with a story about Ms. Honey and her parents, I remembered when she said that she already has a story and it's bursting to get out and it came in fizzes!
The second that I noticed is that based on this movie where the part in the song where they sang "B-R-O-O-C-EE" is that she actually might have helped Bruce like illusion (something like that) to help Bruce from eating the cake! In Bruce pov they're cheering for him! Thanks to Matilda's power! That's why when Ms. Honey cheered "Go Bruceyyyy" all of the kids actually just sitting still

Was a huge plot twist to me.
"He can't!" followed by "he can!" It's a call and response, and in British English the a's are pronounced the two different ways - 'cAHnt' and 'cAn'
Old video, but my interpretation has always been Matilda IS helping Bruce, but not in the way youd expect. Notice her intense stare, notice her mouthing the words the children sing, notice that just before the camera spins and the light show starts the children are doing a back and forth thing, where they doubt him, but after, theyre all on his team, sure that he can do it. Matilda isnt aware of her powers yet, but she's still focusing and quietly cheering him on. The lights and encouragement are how Bruce is feeling, what hes experiencing, because matilda, unknowingly, is using her powers to cheer him on.

IPA for the British version for both versions of the words is with the æ symbol, which is closer to the more spread version of the vowel, British pronunciation would be a bit taller than American though. My guess in the distinction between the vowels is too make it clear that they are saying can and can’t

@pierrelilly7797 She is! In the stage production the movie is based off, there's actually a moment when Bruce stops and everyone goes quiet and Matilda then says "Go on Bruce. Do it!", so she definitely is helping :P

It isn't the american can't that is being sung there, it is "can" which sounds close, they are going back and forth between "can't" and "can"

He can’t equals present tense. He cant equals past tense they’re both said in an English accent pronounced slightly differently because they use in a different context. English accent isn’t solid it has hundreds of variations to it even when using the same words depending on how those words are used.
