thanks plazma for the great training mission! exactly what I've been needing as perfect noob... and as a perfect noob I can't understand If I have to start the avoiding maneuver when I get RWR missile warning OR when I see the missile launched by the enemy (as I understood the difficulty level is based on when the enemy would fire the missile, from max range, mid range and lethal range), I'm using simplified labels to better understand what I'm doing, so I can see when the missile gets off the enemy's rails...
This is great! been running through it and with your explanation it's really helped. At the medium launch zone I'm able to defeat the single missile almost every time! Could you update the mission to include the JF-17 with it's active RADAR missiles? Those buggers are tricky sometimes.
I was wondering how far the chances of successfully notching a Fox 3 missile would drop, if the enemy didn't go for a TWS STT or DTT lock and instead chose to just RWS "bug lock" you and then launch. You would get an RWR warning only the moment the missile goes pitbull (illuminates you with its own seeker head), which in turn would reduce your reaction time window considerably, isn't it? Just talking theoretically here since I haven't done any systematic testing myself yet. Excellent video, very much appreciated!
so... there is about 7-10 miles when the missile goes pitbull.. if the enemy gets closer and launches not much you can do.. but if you are that close and you havent launched and pushed the enemy away or killed them you are meant to be killed. really you have those 7-10 miles about 15 seconds to execute a fast notch

Shot fired from under 12km you need to notch see the part of the video about no escape and other launch ranges. If missile is fired on you in no escape you either notch or die.
@@plazma1945 thank you.. But in this video for the a far away shots, you could have gone cold instead of notch, right? Its just that if you are close, you have to notch, right?
What do you think would be the minimum speed to notch a radar missile in general? I'm using this in another relatively realistic plane game (War Thunder), and my brother likes using planes with missiles against me even though I only have access to ww2 aircraft.
Hmm good question I don't know how it's model is in warthunder I do not think speed is a issue as a matter of fact the slower you go the better you should be able to notch For example in theory a jet going to zero speed doing a cobra should auto notch any enemy missile by virtue of stopping closure. But remember this guide was for dcs with ideas and theory, we don't really know how logic works in real missiles all that stuff is top secret.
notching missles is easier in war thunder than in dcs, however, once you are in the notch do not forget to go for a slight vertical turn in case the missle coming at you is equipped with inertial guidance, that will prevent it from hitting you with a proxy fuse. alternatively you might want to stay low because radar missles do not really like ground clutter unless they are guided by a pulse doppler radar. a low altitude notch should help you get away even without chaff in most instances in war thunder
also speed does matter, however you can still notch any missle even while going supersonic, staying low is key becacuse ww2 aircraft are not equipped with chaff, that is so because a non pulse doppler radar doesnt care much about your notch
That's called a split-s maneuver you go straight down reverse and pull away from missile that can definitely work. Usually notching is a close up defense split s is done when you have about ten miles of space
The notch behavior of the 120c seems weird. Tacview and rwr show perfect 90 and copious use of chaff and the 120C acts as if I am just beaming. This results in a kinetic win outside 8nm on the deck, but has yet to make the missle go stupid/blind. Perhaps it has to be notched before the missle is inside 2-3nm maybe?
F14A. The RWR shows 9 o'clock but it appears by Tackview to not be that accurate after all. I did get a proper notch on a couple @ 7nm launches, but it appears to be a dice roll. That is, if you actually hit 90 degrees it works, but the RWR is not that accurate. 😒
I just found this and have started using it to help me improve, have one question, is there a way to give the enemy plane 2 missiles? So, like I defeat his first missile, and as I turn back hot on him, he fires his second missile that I then have to evade, something like he fires his first missile at max range, I then evade it and turn back hot on him and he fires his second missile, but we're now at mid range. Thanks for this by the way.
Heya, so you can do it, open the mission editor and look under missions for the file. Then click on the red planes and change their load out to two missiles. Make sure to save and you should be good to go!
you may have forgotten to mention for the rwr the difference between fox 3 and fox 1....ooops :) The group may start collecting money for plasma's much needed art courses
* pls help me * With what button is the missile launched? What is written in setting? I learned to turn on the plane and take off from the runway and the aircraft carrier and I learned to lock the plane's radar system on the enemy plane, but what the hell is the fire button what????
@@jonouchihisashi2749 well if you are in a high maneuverability airframe like f16 or mirage you may habe enough time to roll into a perfect notch. Ive seen it done in satal. Im personally not quite there yet
Hi. just 1 question. Russian RWR's are bit confusing. when the 90 degree marker lights um im 100% on 90 degrees or is there a sign that tells u ur exactly like 87-93 degrees.
It's 90 and it's not perfect you may need to turn a little left or right.. In theory the idea position of missile is just forward of 90 like 89-87 because if you imagine the missile is constantly coming closer while you are flying sideways so as anti logical as it is you need to slightly turn into the missile to keep it around 90
@plazma1945 im even struggeling with the f15c RWR. i fly the f18 which has that EW mode that shows u a better and bigger RWR. is there a way to also make the F15C RWR more clearer to see and know that ur perfectly notching. the F18 in EW has these 2 big lines at the 90 degrees spots which make notching easy and not to mention the jammer that helps too. so is there a way u can see that more clearly in the f15c?
@@Syrplayer2 no unfortunately not really it really becomes almost like a feeling and estimation I would say try to keep the missile symbol at the 9:05 or the 2:55 position of the rwr so either slightly ahead of the line if it's on your left side and slightly behind IE towards the front of the plane I know it's counterintuitive but like just before the Power Clock Neil would point at the 3:00 position right this way you're adjusting for the missile based on the speed that it's approaching you there is really no perfect way of doing it but it is much easier to do so on the NATO rwr then on the Russian one I think it around a 6-minute mark in the video I have that diagram that I drew with them appear but yeah it's trial error and estimating
@@Syrplayer2 the other thing to keep in mind is if you're at altitude let's say there is no Horizon between you and the position of the missile your chances of notching decrease so if possible try to ensure that there is ground clutter on the opposite side of your plane from which the missile is coming from set the message coming from the right side you should have some sort of terrain on the left side or be low enough to the ground that there is certain there notching a missile when you're high up in the air is almost impossible
Notching is when the enemy aircraft turns perpendicular to the path of our aircraft. It moves towards the aircraft at the same relative speed as the ground, thus it gets filtered out, and disappears (or at least a weapons lock is lost).

This results in a kinetic win outside 8nm on the deck, but has yet to make the missle go stupid/blind. Perhaps it has to be notched before the missle is inside 2-3nm maybe?
Which airfrane are you flying
F14A. The RWR shows 9 o'clock but it appears by Tackview to not be that accurate after all. I did get a proper notch on a couple @ 7nm launches, but it appears to be a dice roll. That is, if you actually hit 90 degrees it works, but the RWR is not that accurate. 😒
@@M3atP0psicl35 hmmmmm interesting almost like rwr is delayed and it's for the M symbol right?
Correct
I just found this and have started using it to help me improve, have one question, is there a way to give the enemy plane 2 missiles? So, like I defeat his first missile, and as I turn back hot on him, he fires his second missile that I then have to evade, something like he fires his first missile at max range, I then evade it and turn back hot on him and he fires his second missile, but we're now at mid range. Thanks for this by the way.
Heya, so you can do it, open the mission editor and look under missions for the file. Then click on the red planes and change their load out to two missiles. Make sure to save and you should be good to go!
you may have forgotten to mention for the rwr the difference between fox 3 and fox 1....ooops :)
The group may start collecting money for plasma's much needed art courses
Muahhahaha... Shhhh... we cant talk about that while we are in the house of sarh competition. Cant give secrets away.... Soon :)
Think it is just a dice roll like many other DCS'isms? Like flares against aim 9x.
Not quite a dice roll, ive been able to replicate notching. I will try in a tomcat too, but notching 100% works
That's a Kobayashi Maru.
Goood video , but do you have another One with the f16
The map. Linked in this video has an f-16 and I explain the Nato rwr about 1/2 way through this video
Let me know if you have specific questions

With what button is the missile launched? What is written in setting? I learned to turn on the plane and take off from the runway and the aircraft carrier and I learned to lock the plane's radar system on the enemy plane, but what the hell is the fire button what????
Different planes have different setting look in buttons for weapon release
Launch weapons
In dcs controls settings search for weapon
Hard seems impossible if trying to dodge after launch alert.
Watch f10 see how close the hard level enemy is when they Launch could be as little as four miles... Might need to hit the deck or hide in mountains?
@@plazma1945 To dodge that close I would have to be cold and full af at the moment.
@@plazma1945 I see hiding is easy, growling veteran, but I tought it was about notching.
@@jonouchihisashi2749 well if you are in a high maneuverability airframe like f16 or mirage you may habe enough time to roll into a perfect notch. Ive seen it done in satal. Im personally not quite there yet
@@plazma1945 fat SU33 won't.
i cant notch from hard mode. not matter M= 1.0 or M= 0.7 Other modes i easy for me. Bus thanks for cool mission
Попробуйте уйти в горы и потом запустит врага. Try to get to mountians then launch enemy hard. I also Did not yet escape from hard enemy also lolol
I did it.
Which plane did you do it in?
@@plazma1945 SU-57 of course.
10 miles is 16km if anyone wants that info.
unless you are in DCS and you are using Nautical Miles which is 18.52 km (so best way to estimate is
1 NM = 2 KM approximately
3000 FEET = 1000 Meters
With nautical miles that would make a little sense yes. thought nautical miles was usually highlited when talking about nautical miles.@@plazma1945
Hi. just 1 question.
@@Syrplayer2 the other thing to keep in mind is if you're at altitude let's say there is no Horizon between you and the position of the missile your chances of notching decrease so if possible try to ensure that there is ground clutter on the opposite side of your plane from which the missile is coming from set the message coming from the right side you should have some sort of terrain on the left side or be low enough to the ground that there is certain there notching a missile when you're high up in the air is almost impossible
thank you for the Valuable information mate. Deserved a sub.@@plazma1945
Drop flares for RAD missiles, lol...!
They are bound to the same control maybe. Drop chaff for rad missiles.
Why does a missile lose you at 90° specifically?
Notching is when the enemy aircraft turns perpendicular to the path of our aircraft. It moves towards the aircraft at the same relative speed as the ground, thus it gets filtered out, and disappears (or at least a weapons lock is lost).
Can you use other NATO aircraft opposed to russian in this mission?
Yes all nato are setup f15 f16 f18 f5 etc all are there on blue to fly
Is the tomcat available?
For some reason i do exactly like you, but i cant still dodge them. Can you help me?
Hmmm m ok do the mission then save the replay after you end mission and upload the reply file somewhere so I can download and try if you have discord add me there Plazma1945 or message here with a link where I can download your track replay file
It's never 100 percent but you can get to 50-70 percent. What plane are you doing it in
Download link no longer works. I know that discord did smth with their link so now they dont work outside of discord.
It's fixed
i cant dodge the med
Which plane. Remember you need to snap 90 get your nose down. If you don't think you have a perfect 90 adjust a little left a little right.
Once you think you are in or near the 90 start popping chaff
