The Lexus LS, a masterpiece of Japanese engineering.

I lost my dad this year and he purchased this vehicle in 2016. After dad passed, I drove it the 1100 miles home and was shocked at how smooth it was as well as the dependability and gas mileage. I have been taking good care of it with regular washing and detailing. When I drive it, it is an absolute pleasure. Best car I have ever driven. The power and sport modes combined are just so smooth. This vehicle truly has a get up and go way about it. Dad knew cars and he sure chose a great one. If you ever have the ability to test this one out and purchase, I highly recommend.

I'm very sorry for your loss. It sounds like your father had great taste in cars at least! I was very impressed with this car when I drove it, there's one (only one) for sale in Quebec right now but it isn't the Ultra Luxury trim. I'm tempted to take a look at it.

By now, a 15 year old S-Class or 7-Series would be relegated to the salvage yard, after becoming a colossal money pit for its' last 3 owners and having virtually no resale value. Lexus are almost timeless and their reliability, longevity & resale value reflect it.

My deceased father bought this same 2004 model 2nd hand in 2006 from the Lexus Dealership for $45k AUD, the original RRP in 2004 was $178k AUD. Crazy depreciation huh? But a bargain for us. $45k wouldn't have even got us a current 2006 IS200 at that dealership so getting an 'as new' LS430 Flagship with 35k KM's on it for that price felt like the bargain of the century.
The LS430 is impeccable, the craftsmanship, thoughtfulness of the design, quality of materials, production and finishing. The brilliance of the platform and the surprising amount of power makes this a very special car. Whether on the highway, twisty coastal roads or dirt roads it handles them all magnificently whilst keeping you insulated from it all in that supremely luxurious cabin. It's immense.
In the 15 years of ownership I've never had a single part failure, only ever had to spend money on parts that naturally wear over the life of the car. When you consider the literal HUNDREDS of motors, dozens of computers & circuit boards and buttons/switches, 1000's of wires measuring over a mile in length, powering all of these sophisticated luxurious amenities then that feat of design & engineering becomes all the more impressive. It's one thing for a basic Corolla to be reliable, it's a WHOLE other thing for a fully optioned LS to be reliable.
Clearly Lexus dedicates a significant part of their R&D Budget to ensuring everything they implement is focused towards reliability and longevity.
(Edit, it's 2022 now and everything I wrote is still true, still haven't had any part failures in the 2 and a bit years since I wrote this comment. It's just extraordinary this car.)

It's still whisper quiet. It sounds a bit meatier when idling but there's no droning in the cabin, you can actually hear the exhaust note when you push the pedal but it goes dead silent when cruising at moderately high speeds, and it still sounds great when you slam it. I haven't tried it on a very, very high-speed cruise yet though, but at regular highway speeds it's just a straight-up improvement, best of both worlds. A very happy "accident" considering I just did it because the mufflers for this car are wicked expensive.

The LS is really the only true competition to the S class imo. The 7 series and A8 are both great large cars, but they go toward the sport aspect of the experience. I absolutely love the LS400 and LS460, (the 430 being my least favorite body style.)

    • @PRNTestDrive

I agree! The S-Class is the most versatile in the segment, you can go for maximum comfort/luxury with an S 500, or get the performance/sport feel with either AMG. The second gen LS 400 we did was a real nice car, really can't beat it for reliability.

One of two in Canada?? Well, then i've got the other one. Briarwood Pearl / black leather and suede headliner and pillars, with every conceivable option for that year, including dealer installed SAT. Bought it from the original owner. Full records and a invoice of $112,000 after all said and done when he purchased it new from the dealer in Feb 2004. I was under the impression that there were 17 of them sold in all of Canada, but if you have verification that there are only two of them, well then i feel pretty special. Mine is in showroom condition with 315,000kms. EDIT> Just noticed you said 1 of 2 BLACK ON BLACK. so then Lexus Canada is correct when the say 17 units were sold in the Ultra Luxury package in 2004

I've had the same '98 LS400 for 21 years and it has been a marvel of reliability, a joy to own. Strangers still approach me to ask whether it might be for sale. If possible, I'd advise avoiding the dealers for "service". I always change the oil and filter myself (conventional at 4-5K). I've had German "luxury" brands in the past and they are utter junk by comparison. Reliability is the hallmark of high quality engineering, design and construction. The Germans lack all of those. The exception might be MB's body construction. And they do handle well when everything's actually working and they are out of the repair shop. I once borrowed a friend's then new Bentley Continental and was happy to get back into my own car!

You are absolutely right. Bought a used LS400 at 96K. Utterly reliable and enjoyable car. Tried a MB 2000 E43O 4Matic, first V8 sedan all wheel drive from Benz. Heavily optioned, Brand new order just for me. A beautiful car. $15,000 warranty works first year. Sold 70,000 K. It was a total lemon. I never will own a Mercedes again. BMW also disastrous, serving all the time. Stranded, Towed out of your driveway, smoking on the side of the road. Branding desire until you own one. Audi also same disaster. We’ve had five Lexus now. I have my 2001 LS 430 ultra luxury package white interior, midnight jade green exterior with Erica, the gray burled walnut look. 20 years old running beautifully. Picked up at 2010 LS 460, L AWD ultra premium luxury package, TV between the rear seats on the centre armrest, and unusual package instead of the executive package which loses the third middle seat in the rear. I don’t desire a new Lexus. Not a Lexus LS 460 or 500. I have adjusted to the spindle grille in your face statement. Ya, they look cool. But the interior seems hoaxy. Trying to hard the make a statement. Interestingly, the new phantom, + Rolls-Royce ghost are Deemphasizing ostentatious adornments and simplifying the interior design. I guess it’s sort of like juxtaposed baroque to art deco. Lol

Toyota coud easily outdo any automaker in tech and engineering innovations. It could do cool spot cars, but than it wouldn't har reputation.
They are doing everything right cos they are highest capitalisation car company and let's not forget that LS vastly outselles any competitor.

Good points. Each manufacturer in this segment pushes the envelope forward. I always think about how long it took BMW, Audi, Mercedes, & Lexus to develop tech like radar cruise control or ultrasonic parking sensors, compared to how long the rest of the industry took to catch on. Now the tech is copied within a year or two and can be found on entry-level consumer cars.

The Sport Suspension option models handle better and you actually use that suspension every time you drive it. Look for the badge behind front wheels.

Great video PRN! I have this exact Black UL with the burnt wood. Mine is a 2006. Best car I have ever owned. In fact, I would say this was the last greatest flagship Lexus. After the LS430, Lexus started to cheapen out on the quality and even worse decided to step away from pure luxury and lean more sporty now.
I owned a 1996 LS400 before this, and while I loved that car too, the LS430 is a major step up because they managed to retain most if not all of the best features of the LS400 while bringing in tons of new tech.

      1) Engine, simply perfection, smooth, powerful, quiet and most of all bulletproof reliable.
      2) Seats - supremely comfortable and of the highest quality and buttery smooth leather.
      3) Tomb like silence interior. It gets eerily quiet cruising on a nicely paved road.
      4) Soft touch closing doors. I love coming home late at night and just lightly tap the door close and let it pull itself shut without waking the family.
      5) Headlights - they are super bright, even with the cloudy oxidation forming on it. I'll get those restored soon.
      6) Fit and finish - My 13 year old lexus fit and finish is still top notch. All the draws and cubbies open up with soft quiet and fluid like movement. I recently sat in a 3 year old Porsche Panamera, and everything I touched creaked and felt really cheap to the touch.

Nice video! I have a 2004 UL 80,000 miles. Something I figured out that other owners may want to know. The I AGREE SCREEN. I also find any navigation system in a vehicle that does not connect to my phone useless. Go into settings on the touch screen and turn off the display screen. When you start the car the Lexus logo will appear and the screen will go blank after a few seconds with no I AGREE message ever appearing. If you push climate control or audio you can make any adjustments or changes you want and after about 10 seconds the screen will go blank again. However if you use the map/navigation the display screen will go back to default on.

Just bought a 2003 LS430 with 84k on it a few weeks ago here in Michigan. Timing belt seems to be the key maintenance item to perform. Check your air filter and cabin filter, too. Easy to replace. Plugs will likely last 200K. Change conventional oil at about 5K and synthetic at 7-7.5K. DO NOT substitute coolants. Don't flush transmission.

I believe it is safe to say that any Lexus is a rebranded Toyota intended for the world, that would otherwise not come out as a left hand car except for the ones under the Lexus brand.
Toyota Z30 Soarer and the Altezza are examples of such cars.
But then again, Toyota Celsior was the king before the Crown took over.
One example of the Crown Royal can actually be found in China as a left hand drive car, although this car was never meant to be sold as a left hander, but I found one.

Over the years, I've had several luxury sedans. Besides a sedan as family car, I also have a 2+2 performance car so minimally, I must have over 200bhp for my right foot. A Merc E-class which I only had for 3 months because its too boring, a Lexus GS300 which I had for 6 years because its just too nice, very reliable and low cost of ownership. Then, I changed to a BMW 730Li but irritating small problems here and there plus the high cost of maintenance, I sold it and changed to an SUV (never own one previously) driving the Subaru Forester XT because car prices went crazy in Singapore while still keeping my R35 GTR. Its 4 years now and I am looking to change the Forester to a Lexus again. In mind right now is a 2015-2017 Lexus ES300H Luxury. Hope to find a suitable one now. I just traded my August 2015 Subaru Forester XT for a December 2015 Lexus ES300h Luxury. Will be collecting the car in 5 days after the weekend and paperwork with the authorities. I am paying S$118,000 or USD88,000 for it and can used for 6 years. In singapore, before purchasing a new car, a certificate must be bidded first due to limitations by the government who will dictate how many certificates are available each month to control the car population on the road. Depending on available certificates, supply and demand, this paper alone has ranged from S$30,000 to S&$100,000+. After the tenth year, cars are either scrapped or owners can pay for another certificate to use the car for another 5 or 10 years and this certificate price will be based on the average of the prevailing 3 months. For example, in August 2008 when i purchased the GTR, I paid $60,000 for the certificate alone, 300% government taxes based on declared value of the car at import, dealer's profit etc I paid a total of $308,000 (USD$227,000) to use it for 10 years and in July 2018, I paid another S$37,000 (USD28,000) so i can use the car till July 2028.

Or if every 5 years I have to pay that big $1000-$1500 repair than it's still fine , I just dont want to be paying repair payments every godammn 3 months!, if I get one I will take very good care of it and keep up the maintenance in order for it to last until it finally dies, I want one really bad and already have one that I can buy with only 110miles! , I can buy it with cash right now for only $9K but debating because I heard v8 engine toyotas are expensive to repair.... plus I'm tired of driving my 2000 toyota echo and ready for an upgrade , dont know very much about cars and appreciate the help! Thank you for checking it out! We've had it on our list for a little while now and we're lucky we have contacts in the Toronto press circuit that hold onto awesome cars like this!

My 22.5 yo LS400 has been my daily driver for more than 20 years. I will never part with it. Yes, I've looked at all succeeding models including the LS500. In my view, Lexus seems to have lost its way. My company used to provide me with new MBs. Despite perfect maintenance, they were very unreliable...pleasant to drive but trouble-prone. I sold the company...bought the Lexus. Incidentally, I was very disappointed by Lexus dealer service. Much of the information they gave me and which I heard them give to other customers was entirely wrong. Some of the maintenance work done on my car wasn't done correctly. So if you don't know a good deal about the car, I would strongly urge the use of a good, high-quality shop with an excellent reputation in your community for all non-warranty work. You will need VERY few repairs over the decades anyhow.

I have a 2018 but it doesn't compare to my Father's 2008 in terms of smoothness of ride and interior space.

The older Lexus models still hold up well, there's no doubt!

I have a 2001 Celsior, (the Japanese model) 94K has all the same options,... but a lot more wood, the rear-view mirror and centre instrument frame , and also rear seat massage, which I don't see there

Very interesting that they’d omit those features on the US Models, perhaps Toyota felt they could sell the LS without any loss of sales without those features for this market.

@@PRNTestDrive but no massage for the driver in my JDM, just the back seats.. guess the driver isn't important haha

It's crazy that this vehicle was made nearly 20 years ago and is still looks great. I seen a couple of these on the road. And they still look like something that could have been made today
