    Thanks for showing your OM-1 bird-in-flight results. After a 40+ year career of using FF gear for newspaper work (and rehab from repetitive stress injuries from carrying all that gear) I found the siren call of portability hard to resist, trying my hand at bird photography in retirement with the Lumix G9. While MFT is not likely to ever replace top-of-the-line full frame gear I have found there are plenty of AF adjustments in the G9 menu that have improved my keeper rate even for birds like black skimmers coming straight towards me. Lumix has been great about software upgrades. OM Systems would be smart to work with someone of your experience to improve their product. Thanks for giving MFT a try.

    I agree that the focus does go in and out on occasion for me and OM needs to fix this, however I do get really good/great results with SH2(I select 100 fps) and I use “all focus points” for the focus area, AI bird detect and I have my tracking sensitivity set to -1. The speed is so fast that even with some occasional soft shots, I often have way too many keepers to sort through. It’s not the perfect system(no system is) but I always try to remind myself that pros were taking phenomenal photos of BIF long before this technology came about. Thus, while issues are there, I try to remember to appreciate the technological advances that we do have and just go out and enjoy the camera:) I’m glad you’re enjoying the OM System setup

    Thoughts from an mainly Olympus user. I have only had Olympus camera's capable of photographing birds. I never had the possibility to compare with the AF from other systems in the long term. The only thing I know is that my bird photography is improved significantly with the OM-1 and 150-400mm, also over the E-M-1x and E-M1 III. The most important thing is that I still enjoy photography with it. Because of the price, weight and size benefits. As I cannot afford any high end full frame 400mm lenses and high end full frame camera's that could benefit from it.

    • @Wildridefilms
      @Wildridefilms ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You can get a Nikon Z8 and the 400 f4.5 for a similar if not lower price than your current setup. You'll get a significantly better image in terms of noise, DR, sharpness, carry a similar weight, but of course sacrifice on the flexibility of the zoom and the 800mm equivalent reach.

    • @eelco6587
      @eelco6587 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@Wildridefilms I am using it on 1000mm a lot. Cropping won't close the gap. I never seen any comparisons between the two. Sharpness is already very good with the 150-400. I should have mentioned 800mm instead of 400mm. My bad.

    • @DennisJacobsenWildlife
      @DennisJacobsenWildlife  ปีที่แล้ว

      I had the A1 and GM 600mm and thats crazy fast and precise but also very expencive and large/heavy 😀 but OM-1 and 150-400 are also very very good for sure 📷📷📷

  • @snufflepig60
    @snufflepig60 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    I have the OM1 plus 40-150 f/2.8 and 300mm f/4 and 1.4x TC. I also have the Canon R5 plus 100-500 L series lens. I love both systems equally, I have not measured this scientifically, but my feeling is that for BIF I get a higher percentage of sharp images with the Canon, but despite that, the higher 50fps frame rate with the OM1 means that I'm getting slightly more sharp images using the OM1. At the moment I'm preferring the Olympus overall, because of the higher frame rate and lighter weight, and most importantly because of the PRO-Capture feature and for me, this is a game changer. If the R5 firmware was updated to include an equivalent pre-capture ability it would be tough to choose, but when you take price into consideration, the 150-400mm (I am waiting for one) is fantastic value for money, when compared with it's Full Frame equivalents. That value for money and the difference in portability suit my needs rather well, BUT I wouldn't want to lose access to the amazing image quality of my R5...for when portability is not an issue.

    Interesting Dennis - and also surprising you have sold your Sony gear. I understand the size and weight challenge but its probably the best equipment you can buy. I have travelled with birders doing the A1/600 GM or A1/200-600 and I have been very impressed with the quality.
    I use the R5 with the 100-500 and now also an R7 (Crop) - very good quality (R7 not equal to the R5) but the price is also very low.
    Also travelled with OM Gear guys - seems very good but yes AF is not at the same level as the A1 or R5.
    Will be interesting to see where You go in terms of equipment - very good work Dennis.

    I understand your frustration Dennis. I do find that when tracking a bird in flight, I do get a few frames unsharp. It will even do it on a sequence of a bird that is fairly static. I recently shot a burst of pictures of Cuckoo`s mating. I too a burst of 40+ images, and even then it lost the focus on a couple of frames. Its then pulls back and they are pin sharp. As you say, its its a one of shot, and you dont nail it, its annoying.

    @narinthip3058 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Hope OMDS will look at this and resolve the issue soon. I don't have this kind of inconsistency even when shooting with SH2. Yes, I do get soft images out of the series but nothing like yours. I never get 100% rate but it never goes below 85% for burst of 4 seconds and above. I don't hold my shutter the whole time though during the shooting sequence. I would release it and acquire the focus roughly every 3-4 seconds. I mentioned in your earlier video that I get higher sharp image rate with normal e-shutter at 20FPS. I do own two OM-1 and both don't produce results like yours. I don't think it has to do with your technique or settings. I am using almost similar setup as yours; CAF, AF on, +2 Sensitivity, Auto IS prioritize FPS, Release priority on (which should be worse as it will fire regardless of focus acquisition), Bird AI. My focus box for BIF varies based on situation from All, to Large to my own custom 3x7 primarily for capturing bird flying across.

The tracking mode doesn´t work (works realy bad) on any Olympus camera. But I suspect that the most of You already knew that. I often use the cross or a box insted of all point.

    Interesting findings Dennis. I always shoot with the IS off at 50fps wide open at a minimum of 1/2000 sec shutter for BIF. What I find annoying with the OM-1 is out of a 25 frame burst I will get the first few frames in focus tack sharp and then the AF will drift for 3 or 4 frames then recover for maybe 6 or 7 frames then the drift will occur again. Others report a similar experience. I'm hoping this issue can be addressed by firmware upgrades.
