Very cool, I've been studying (haven't even had a IT job or help desk job yet) but took the Google it support cert & Google automation & python cert. Since a lot cloud work runs on Linux do you think RHCSA is a good thing to get next? After that I'll go AZ-900>AZ-104 and then maybe learn some dev ops tooling, then maybe apply for cloud assistant jobs.

Chef is mostly a tool to ensure servers are in certain state and not necessarily about setting up cloud infrastructure. For that you use terraform or cloud formation.
It helps to just start with the most basic cloud cert you can find. Today I passed my cert exam for azure fundamentals. Now I have a firm concept of what the environment looks like. I think a lot of my questions before the first cert stemmed from.the fact that I didn't understand the basics of the landscape.
This was great! I have been a hardware guy for so long. It's tough to move away from that, but this chat was super useful. My CCNA, CCNA Security and CCNA Voice expired and I have just not figured out if it's worth recerting in that way or move to AWS or Azure. Thanks for the help! I really need to sharpen my Linux skills too, been a while!!! I love my CBT Nuggets sub and now I'm looking at Codecademy and thinking I'll do that with my son as he's been asking to do Python. Chuck, you are correct, you may not need the degree to get started. I did the same thing. After working in the computer labs at college (late 80s), I dropped out (Mech Eng) and instead worked on getting my MCSE, CCNA, and Firewall cert CCSA. And I made it up to IT Manager. But after 20 years, I found that I needed the degree to apply for better jobs at great companies. Trust me, unless you are running your own business, which most people will not, they will need the degree in 20 or so years to get those better paying, better benefits, better jobs. Especially as you become more "senior" and try to complete with the next group of young, underpaid recruits. Your future self will thank you. Find the cheapest school you can afford and get a degree.

So I feel super lucky to just have separated from the military about half a year ago. I am currently a cloud engineer, but I feel so overwhelmed and the imposter syndrome all the time. I honestly am super grateful but I am trying my best to stay afloat and not be a dead weight on my team. So now I am about 6/7 months into cloud (4 years roughly of helpdesk exp) and again I just hate this feeling of feeling behind the curve on everything.

Just like security. You can't get certified in any security certificate and "land a job" right away. They usually require prior experience in systems or networks.
That's with most higher level IT jobs as you can land a Systems Administrator or Network Administrator role without prior IT experience hense why you typically start of as a Help Desk Technician before you move up in those roles. You start from the bottom and work your way up.

Hey brotha just wanted to comment to tell you I really like your channel and this video in particular. I've gotten both the Cloud Prac and the AWS-SA cert not long ago. AWS-Dev cert scheduled for May 15th. For all those reading this comment, accept the reality you'll need to learn multiple tech skills to thrive in this cloud-driven world. As NetworkChuck said, "take bite sizes," as you learn this shit. One day at a time. You need to realize this isn't a race. It's a lifelong (career) path. The best teacher is always the curious student asking questions. Jah feel me? Definitely learn Python and Linux on side (lots of vids on the tube for this). And just get started man!! Stop worrying about silly questions. Just dive into the deep end NOW and start swimming. I recommend Cloud Practitioner for the first cert. It's just a great way to get those feet wet. Even if you consider yourself an expert. Keep up the great content bruv. You know your shit.
@@boxer1639 well... My opinion would be that cloud certs are, overall, pretty damn broad. A beginner should focus on the triple threat of cloud certs. All 3 AWS associate certs. Those alone will make your resume POP. Anything else, like networking certs, in addition to those is gravy on the side. Networking is a decent chunk of these cloud certs. I know I went through a ton of the material for the Solutions Architect cert. Tl;dr: Focus on the triple threat first. More bang for your buck IMHO.
I am about to take the Security + exam. Once I secure that cert. I want to start studying for cloud tech. I was planning on taking the Comptia course on CBT Nuggets. Would it be best for me to start off with either AWS are Azure than Comptia? Thank you btw. Great video!

hi, I'm considering intending two different boot camps I would like to know which one would equip me The ultimate goal is to do cloud engineering... Bootcamp number one is called intellectual point and the certification consist of the CompTIA trifecta Security, Networking and A+ along with CCNA and the CCNP.....The second Boot camp is called Divergence and consist Server+, Linux+, Cloud+, Network+, Security+, and Pentest+...
Google cloud is big too mate... I work at one of the big companies that is heavily pushing migration from aws to Google cloud because of cost savings...
AWS SA Associate is a pretty easy exam. I have a 85% pass rate in my classes. The SA Professional is a different beast. There you have to learn a lot and be able to decide what AWS thinks is the best solution. The first thing I tell my students is I will train them to pass the exams but they (exams) have nothing to do with the real world.
Azure Fundamentals ( AZ-900) and AWS Certified Cloud Practitioner are the entry level courses.... ( just answering a question I saw repeatedly in the chat) 🤘🔥💪☁️
I got AZ certified, and am now getting AWS certified. AWS seems like more ‘ fun,’ as it seems more intuitive. Azure is less intuitive, but really offers the same incredible product. Ubuntu is big in Azure.. AWS has its own AWS AMI ( Amazon machine Image) linux distro. But really, Linux is really very similar across distros, it’s just how it’s conf’d and what desktop you want to run, and what tools you know you want rolled into it. Red Hat and Ubuntu would be great to start with.
How to become a cloud engineer: Work at a big organization that will pay for your training so they can hire you without an interview process. Sounds easy peasy.

I have a broad knowledge about pentesting and exploitation, i used to play a lot of ctfs and learn red teaming tricks. I keep seeing comments online stating that "cloud engineer" isn't an entry-level position and that you need software development experience first and maybe even a CS degree. I'm trying to learn cloud skills so that I can avoid doing those things, and if I had those credentials, I would just be a software developer.
I would love to specialize in cloud but I see no women in this field and would love to see you interview women in this role. I use to work in tech sales and had to get out because too much discrimination in interviews made me feel defeated.
Hi Chuck Im a 23 year old last year Electrical engineering student from Greece. I discovered programming about 2 years ago and I am leaning towards Software engineering or Cybersecurity, although I feel like I am kinda "not young" anymore, so starting an Msc in one of these 2 is going to be a real struggle. And Im now looking for a motivation to keep up studying and not rely on the EE degree.. Any advice?
Just like they said, learn it if your company uses it. Google Cloud isn't as popular as AWS, Azure (pure cloud), and VMware (hybrid cloud) is the thing though.
Absolutely, go for it. Being in your 40s or 50s is nothing. Realistically, there's no one on this channel or posting that's any better than you. None of this crap is rocket science, and even if it was, you could do that too. Ageism is really messed up and self imposed. It existed in a time where jobs were very.physically demanding. Nothing involving a computer relates to this. Mentally, there are scientists, surgeons, professors, researchers, etc. that are in their 70s and still at the top of their game. Use your "crisis" as motivation. Keep at it. You're mentally and physically tougher than you think.
Yeah if a 50 year old wanted to go into a trade itd probably be too late, realistically, but going into IT seems ideal, loads of people 30-40-50 are switching over. Im 25 and work as a joiner these past 5 years, and i know many people in trades and id hate to do it into my 50's

If you advance to a senior or architect role seems a devops platform such as Ansible, Puppet, Chef or Salt is a requisite.

You can, you can get a crappy help desk job making $10/hr 1099. Then, after gaining some experience, you move on... and on... and on...

I keep seeing comments online stating that "cloud engineer" isn't an entry-level position and that you need software development experience first and maybe even a CS degree. I'm trying to learn cloud skills so that I can avoid doing those things, and if I had those credentials, I would just be a software developer.

I would love to specialize in cloud but I see no women in this field and would love to see you interview women in this role. I use to work in tech sales and had to get out because too much discrimination in interviews made me feel defeated.

Networking is managing infrastructure to a very low level whereas cloud is engineering solutions. It's more architecture than engineering I would say.

Cloud is not networking (only). Is better to get a degree which already include all these skills , like one from WGU: Bs in Cloud.

Hi Chuck Im a 23 year old last year Electrical engineering student from Greece. I discovered programming about 2 years ago and I am leaning towards Software engineering or Cybersecurity, although I feel like I am kinda "not young" anymore, so starting an Msc in one of these 2 is going to be a real struggle. And Im now looking for a motivation to keep up studying and not rely on the EE degree.. Any advice?

Just like they said, learn it if your company uses it. Google Cloud isn't as popular as AWS, Azure (pure cloud), and VMware (hybrid cloud) is the thing though.
AWS > Azure , but honestly they each are better for different kinds of companies/environments

Ageism is really messed up and self imposed. It existed in a time where jobs were very.physically demanding. Nothing involving a computer relates to this.
Mentally, there are scientists, surgeons, professors, researchers, etc. that are in their 70s and still at the top of their game.
Use your "crisis" as motivation. Keep at it. You're mentally and physically tougher than you think.

Yeah if a 50 year old wanted to go into a trade itd probably be too late, realistically, but going into IT seems ideal, loads of people 30-40-50 are switching over. Im 25 and work as a joiner these past 5 years, and i know many people in trades and id hate to do it into my 50's
