    I’m a pretty senior software engineer, been working with AWS for like 8 years, and I gotta say the info your bro is sharing is DEAD-ON. Very informative video and valuable content.
    I also didn’t know crap about networking when I started as an engineer, and it’s a huge blind spot for a lot of coders. The stuff on this channel has been very helpful!

    Recently got a role as a cloud engineer and I have been a linux engineer for 4 years, system administrator for 3 years and computer Technician for 2 years.
    The skills I have or were required for the role are:
    1. Linux (cloud is 98% linux)
    2. Ansible
    3. Terraform
    4. Python
    5. Elasticsearch
    6. Jenkins or bamboo
    7. Git or SVN
    8. Nexus
    9. Networking( this should have been after Linux)
    10. Kubernetes or Openshift (also should have been higher)
    11. Yaml ( this is not necessarily required, but I have seen people struggling with yaml to a point of frustration so just knowing the basic rules of yaml should be fine, Space not tab)

    Red Hat is the licensed version that you pay for which gives you tech support. CentOS ( scent-oh-ess) is nearly *exactly* the same as Red Hat; stable, good for production use, just no tech support, is community driven. Fedora is also nearly identical to Red Hat, but is the sandbox version meant for testing & development, not production use. AWS Linux AMI, not sure what Linux that's based on, but it is free-tier. PS> I'm studying for RHCSA and I'm learning that students are mostly using CentOS for RHCSA exam ( RHEL 7 / 8)... it's awesome stuff, go for it! PPS> I got Azure & AWS certified and they are very very scary similar. But, if the cloud is new to you it's best if you pick one or the other. It's just more difficult to be a master of both, unless you're in both all day long...

    Rhel and CentOS are downstream forks of Fedora, RHEL being the paid-for support version. Amazon Linux is really a derivative of both of these. Honestly there’s not much user space difference and classically Amazon Linux differed only in the version of glibc that was available. There might be more differences now, and with Amazon Linux 2 I know there are some user space tools that allow ease of working inside of the AWS tools ecosystem.

  • @devops1044
    @devops1044 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    CentOS was (C)ommunity (ent)erprise Linux (OS) and is binary aka 'bug for bug' compatible with RHEL.
    As of RHEL 8, CentOS became CentOS Stream and is upstream from RHEL and no longer bug-for-bug.
    Rocky and Alma are new binary compatible with RHEL.
    Also, you can get a RH developer no-cost subscription which allows 16 nodes, physical or virtual, at no cost.
    Amazon Linux is RHEL based as well.

    What an awesome, straightforward video on how to get a job as a cloud engineer! Where's the best place to learn networking? Do I need to get my CCNA or Security+? I got my A+ last year and just passed the AWS Cloud Practitioner exam 2 days ago and currently work as a remote tech support rep for a large electronics retailer.

    • @desiboy681
      @desiboy681 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Since you got your AWS and work as a tech support. It is do-able to go straight to Security+ as per the link provided. However, some felt that if they had A+ or Network+, they would have better understanding efficiently when on the job. CCNA is similar to Network+. Both Networking and Security are hot in the market and getting popular. Make sure to get more experience in them because company don't just look at certificate, they will really want someone with more experience. Hope this help.

    • @TheStereoField
      @TheStereoField 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I’ve been a sw engineer for a long time and I’ve never heard of SDLC
      Edit: ok so you mean the development lifecycle. I didn’t know about the acronym. The reason why he didn’t mention it, is because it can be completely different depending on where you’re working. You can spend a month or two learning XP or waterfall, but you’re hired at an agile company, and your lifecycle knowledge is useless. Also, there are always nuances and tweaks done by every team to suit their resources and product.
      You SHOULD ABSOLUTELY learn how to test code you write. Every language has its own set of testing tools (pytest for python, junit for java, etc), but unit testing principles are pretty consistent across languages

Make sure to find someone else who know more to assist you so you can learn along the way. Plus keep the setup simple to maintain them efficiently and keep number of those people that can assist. Plus I would recommend to get a job so you can increase your knowledge and experience better and this will build your confidence of what you do.

    I really like the advice given. You might not believe but one of my friend in year 2011 working on virtualisation gave me same advice. I was linux admin at that time.. preparing for my CCNA. I left sys/network admin and moved to other things. Linux, Networking and infra work satisfy the geek inside an IT guy but the nature of job is simply not healthy. 24x7 environment...never ending queue of tickets...sev2..sev1..SLAs and TAT...weekends...on call support... it was too much to bargain for living a happy peaceful life for me... that's why I moved on. DevOps/Cloud Engineer is same thing in disguise..

      Hi, what career did you move on to? Just curious because i am interested in network/sys admin work but due to my age 50, i am hesitant to make this career change. Hope to get your response. Would help me a ton in my decision-making. Thanks in advance!

    Note on your degree and cert comments. What you’re saying is true if you’re talking about 2-year/associates degrees, but a 4-year Comp sci or comp eng will not, and doesn’t need to, include any certifications. The degree will open up more doors than any cert.

    I was in a padded cell and they launch the missile when I took a shet and even though I was in a padded cell by myself there's the door and it had a hole and there's someone stuck in the hole and I wanted to save them but I figured the best way to save the person stuck in the hole was for me to get out of my cell so I just was on my best behavior I think it was scooter who is stuck in the hole

    You guys were saying how you can’t just get into the cloud.... I am studying for my AWS solutions architect degree and have a year left on my MIS... yet my bachelors is in business. I pickup quick and am able to follow instructions / understand the syntax. Can I still make it to the cloud starting out or do you think I’ll have to work a lower level job first?

    Should I learn straight cloud or start from bottom like desktop support as a Student in IT major ?

    • @desiboy681

      If you can work as a desktop support during your study then you can get into Cloud job after you graduate. This way you have solid knowledge and experience in IT industry. The more you get your hands on in different area, the more you can easily decide which path. If you need further help just PM me or something. Hope this help. Just remember Cloud is the future.

    do you guys normally learn things through college courses or self learning? and what are your thoughts on the two approaches?

    • @desiboy681
      @desiboy681 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Cloud service was not available when I was in college because it was very very new. You will have to find out from your college if they provide. Otherwise there are private service that will do and you can learn completely on your own which can be a challenge. I was able to take A+ exam just by reading the book and I did hands on at my job while working which was great. Once you go higher then it will be a challenge and you will have to decide how you want to get trained. I learn better with hands on.

    I asked Chat GPT what Amazon Linux was based off of and here is its answer: Amazon Linux is a Linux distribution that is based on the Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) operating system. However, Amazon Linux is not simply a clone of RHEL; it has been customized and optimized specifically for use in the Amazon Web Services (AWS) cloud computing environment. Amazon Linux is available as a free, open-source operating system that can be used on EC2 instances in the AWS cloud or on-premises.
