I take the meaning to be that the wordless yodeling at the start displays the talent of his voice, but only in the end, after he has mastered his demons, can he truly sing loudly and with clarity of message.

I feel like the first Ooohs are ‘stiff/don’t know how to dance’ Ren, and the last Ooohs are the ‘relax in the dance’ Ren, and it’s hard not to celebrate with him when it happens. Says a lot about his creativity that by the end he’s turned a load of ooooo-ing into this deep feeling packed with meaning.

The difference in the reactions from beginning to the end is equivalent to his "dance" at first they're not sure if they love it ...in the end they've learned to accept it and they now absolutely love it. I LOVE LOVE Love seeing the various reactions. I've been stuck watching them all day every day for a week now.

As an RN, I have seen (from a medical and human side) mental illness. Also as a grandmother of a grandson ❤ on the autism spectrum. What breaks my heart is that what makes the people who entertain us (the general public) is, so many times, the very thing that plagues these artists. I definitely have the analytical mind vs the creative, artistic mind. I have ZERO artistry. Unfortunately the majority of those who do have artistry also deal with mental issues/disorders (either in their genetic makeup or some virus/illness), and sometimes that is what makes them think outside the box (where my uncreative, follow the rules mind wouldn’t even begin to know where to start, and wouldn’t even dare to try to go). If you have any doubts about my mind…just know that I proofed this comment multiple times before I posted. And I do believe that all my punctuation and such are correct. As far as I know anyway. 🙄😕

Sean, trust me - you WILL play this over & over again. And it will reward you. There are multiple unseen layers that can only be revealed from repeated plays. However, I do concede, it depends on how much you enjoy doing 12 rounds in this emotional boxing ring. Me, personally, I feel utterly shattered, rung-out, drained after just every single viewing. But that's the price of watching a masterpiece before me.

Ren is an incredible artist and I'm so glad he's blowing up, he was signed by Sony about 10 years ago when they found him busking, when he came down with a mysterious illness they dropped him, he was bed bound in pain for 23 hours a day with no answers, they told him it was all in his head, eventually he was properly diagnosed years later with Lyme disease, by then the damage had already been done, he suffered with chronic pain, brain damage and stress induced psychosis. He had a stem cell transplant in 2016 which helped loads but he's still got a long way to go, he's currently in Canada getting more treatment for the next 6 months but he's created enough music to release in that time, he's amazing. He writes, sings, raps, story tells, directs his music videos and produces his own music. He's also the king of one shot live takes, I hope you jump down the ren rabbit hole, you won't be disappointed. Got a sub from me just for this reaction, amazing 👏

Great reaction. "Hi Ren" is the song that put Ren on everyone's radar since December; it went viral and has garnered more than 4.1 million views since its debut, but he has been creating great music for more than ten years. Ren’s music videos are generally recorded live in a single take (although not necessarily the first take). His latest release, "Sick Boi," is almost another chapter to "Hi Ren." I am 57 y/o, and I only recently learned about Ren and have gone down this rabbit hole ever since. Many of his songs resonate with me because he addresses struggles that I myself face every day.
He plays multiple instruments, has impressive vocals, is an excellent storyteller, and is quite the philosopher and poet. Check out the trilogy "The Tale of Jenny/Screech/Violet." It is haunting and has an unforeseen conclusion; WATCH THEM IN THE STATED ORDER, as this is the flow of the storyline, or just watch “The Tale of Jenny & Screech (Full),” which includes “Violet’s Tale at the end. It is another example of Ren’s genius and a master’s class in storytelling. It has been likened to a Shakespearean tragedy.
Ren’s collaborations with Chinchilla (“Chalk Outlines,” “How to Be Me”) are beautiful and showcase his singing voice while addressing mental health. I would watch the official live music videos. "Chalk Outlines" is one of my favorite songs right now. Ren's personal reflections are threaded through many of his songs; "Insomnia," "Depression," “Diazepam," “Penitence,” “Dear God,” “Heretic,” “Dominos,” his "Freckled Angels" album, just to name a few, all deserve a listen. His song "Money Game" (Part I & II) is another recommendation.
His performances with Sam Tompkins (“Blind Eyed,” “Earned it /Mans World / Falling,” “Walking on the Moon), Eden Nash (“Humble,” “Ocean”), Bibi (“Crutch,” “Ahiahiaoha”), Molly McKinna (“Penitence”), his former bandmate, Romain Axisa (“French Song”) are all great.
Ren's performances as a member of the band "The Big Push" (which unfortunately broke up), their busking (street performances), concerts, and their live recordings, are awesome and well worth checking out. Ren's covers of "I Shot the Sheriff," "Wade in the Water," "An Englishman in New York," the songs "Oh My Woman," “Swan Song,” and so many others are equally impressive and really give you a sample of his vocal ability.
Ren just released his latest single, “Sick Boi.” In anticipation of his stay in Canada for more treatments, Ren prepared some music ahead of time to be released over the next six months that he expects to be gone. "Sick Boi" is almost another chapter to "Hi Ren."

    @cas9065 ปีที่แล้ว +33

What a great reaction. I love the relatable way you give your constructive thoughts on this. Sick Boi is the follow on from this one, and Genesis and the Hunger are great places to go rap wise. 'What you want' and Power are also great. He does retakes and dropped a reimagination of The Verve's Bittersweet Symphony yesterday, and losing it shows off his rap skills best. Money Games Parts 1 and 2 are great raps with a powerful social message, and I personally love Heretic and everybody drops. The biggest competitor to this as pure performance is The Tale of Jenny and Screech. You've gotta do all 3 parts which he added together in that video, and they are 13 minutes long, but the storytelling is stunning.
And then he can sing. You already have comments about his duets with Chinchilla, Chalk Outlines and my personal favourite How to be me, but some of the street performances with Sam or his band The Big Push will show you more of his musical range. I find the Wade in the Water and the Man's world cover particularly good.
And that is not all. You will have a wave of appreciative Ren obsessed on your channel, and judging from your comments on this one, quite a few of us will stay for the rest. Thank you.

Ren was signed to Sony years ago and then right after he contracted Lyme disease and fell very I’ll so Sony dropped him. Unfortunately his Lyme was initially misdiagnosed and mistreated - for years- which allowed disease to ravage his body including his brain. I believe he was near death. He recd a stem cell transplant in 2016 and is still undergoing surgeries, treatments and strict regimens to try to reverse the damage and keep inflammation down.
He and His band The Big Push does a lot of busking. The one with the song Hip Hop in it is so energetic. Ren’s a phenomenal singer which really isn’t shown in Hi Ren but you’ll see in other works. Check out him Busking with Sam Tompkins It’s a Man’s World/ Falling.
There are videos of The Big Push in concert and the crowd goes wild.
He defies genres. He mixes up Reggae, soul, rap, storytelling etc. Etc. Etc. (he’s got some really hot solid rap videos). The rap in Hi Ren doesn’t hold a candle to some of his high adrenaline rap. He’s got skills.
One work that people LOVE is the trilogy Tales of Jenny/Screech/Violet. All 3 MUST be watched and reacted to together in one go. Don’t split it up. Very unique!!! It is another one where he recorded it live, all in one night, in one take. No after- editing just like on Hi Ren. He used the alleys, stairs, and such to provide the reverb or affect. It’s a masterpiece that only an independent artist could do. For sure!
I keep finding more gems. Just fell in love with his remake version of Beautiful Rhapsody. It’s my understanding Verve saw it and gave a guitar to the group.
He is a Creative in every sense of the word.

You really need to watch more Ren. "The hunger"of you want to see him rap. "Sick boi" is really good. And of course you have to watch "jenny and screech's tale (full) " is basically a full movie/ play /musical. It's amazing

I find myself replaying parts of this in my head throughout the day. I wake up with little bits - an ear worm. I’m surprised at how many times I’ve now listened to this. I think the amount I relate is what keeps me coming back for more. At the end, this represent HOPE to me. It’s a reminder that this too shall pass. I still get goosebumps when he says “loosen the noose on the rope”. That proverbial rope is something I think we all feel when we get caught in doubt, in worry, in sadness. It’s so powerful.

I’ve never been a watcher of reaction vids, and probably won’t be after I’ve finished this “Hi Ren” reaction journey I’ve been on for the past month or so. But I will say that yours is one of my favorites so far. The semi-stunned way in which you seem to have experienced it is pretty close to how it was for me. Thanks for posting. You’re going to get a lot of fine recs for other Ren songs on here, but I feel like the live Ren x Chinchilla performance of “Chalk Outlines” comes the closest to this song as far as goosebump material. I think a lot of people overlook that one - intentionally or unintentionally - simply because another artist is involved. But…HIGHLY recommended.

I've got to say I didn't think I'd listen to often either after hearing it, just like you I was utterly blown away but never saw it becoming something I'd end up listening to once or twice a day but it did it I can't seem to put it down along with a bunch of his other songs I'll be pottering around at work and realise I'm singing verses to myself.

Welcome to the world of Ren. He is amazingly talented and is a true artist. He can rap, rap and sing, sing and play, play and perform, perform and so much more! He has tracks you will want to play and listen to multiple times and he has ones like these that are liking watching a play or movie with a deep message behind it. Appreciate your take on it. First time here on your channel. New Ren fan, about 3 weeks now, and I'm loving every minute of it. Haven't heard a track yet that I don't like.

I am on my 200th round about watching reactions to Rens song from the last verse and then spoken word at the end. You definitely had such a bang on analysis at the end. My favorite thing is witnessing just how much everyone who does a reaction vid literally is so locked in to the energy of the moments they forget the camera all together and are lost in magic. Great stuff! 👊🧡👍

I really must admit: I watched several different reaction channels, but rarely someone is depicting and explaining songs like you are. I really like your short deep dive of the songs you listening to and most of all for your capability to differentiate between personal taste and musicianship. I respect that very much!
If you want something similar to this track then you could listen to the 3-part tale he wrote about Violett, Screech and Jenny. If you want something like a banger you could listen to one of his most recent singles Sick Boi and if you wanna hear something lighter but still meaningful, there is Chalk Outline with Chinchilla.

Ren was wrongfully diagnosed (and medicated) with M.E. for 10 years... to finally find out that what he had was Lyme disease. Lyme disease, when properly medicated in time can be healed. But if you wait to long, it start to destroy you by attacking immune system and so far no cure.
I think that's what makes this song even more gut-ranching.

The fact that he couldn't stop the video at any point for the usual reaction type stuff says a lot. Yeah, this is a performance, not just a song. Its a a short theatre play, music, poetry. The kid has buckets of talent and the fact that he chose to deliver it the way he did, wearing his heart on his sleeve makes it that much more valuable. Especially in today's music scene. I just hope he keeps going in that direction and doesn't start to see music as content...

Very small thing to comment on, but that is in fact a classical guitar, not a "country guitar" :) It's got nylon strings which have a noticeably different sound to them than metal ones, as well as a wider neck, among other differences.
