    Paruima is a beautiful village that could become a tourist destination for Guyana. Hopefully the indigenous leaders together with the Ministry of Tourism plan the construction of inns or tourist camps and training for young people to receive local and international visitors and thus create a new source of economic income for the development of Paruima and neighboring villages. 🤞

    this is a simple method and the roots doesn't kill the fish but it makes them little high like when you smoke a weed or drink alcohol.

    Commonly practiced in Malaysia too. What is bad and dangerous is the use of explosives to kill the fish in the rivers and sea. The worst practices that are killing the rivers and ecosystem are the logging activities.

    If we eat the fish that's been poisoned will we die?

    • @314522
      @314522  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      No, the "poison" merely blocks the oxygen in the water so the fish suffocate.

    The fish are rendered unconscious by the chemical in the plant not actually poisoned . I am not sure what exactly is the active ingredient but it seems to work by reducing/absorbing the oxygen in the water or paralyzing the fish respiratory system temporarily. If they are not quick to harvest/collect the fish they can revive and escape. If it rains after the chemical is applied and it is diluted too much the fish escape. This is not done everyday. only in the dry season and the catch is preserved by drying, smoking and a special dish known as pepper-pot which is made from the extract of another plant named "bitter" cassava or yucca. The bitter cassava is a species distinct from the others as it contains cyanide which is extremely toxic to mammals. Again nothing is wasted the fiber of the cassava is made into a type of bread, the toxic extract is used to make cassereep which is the food preservative. Pepperpot is Guyana's national dish but the recipe the native people use and the more modern citizens of the country use is very different.
    Even the little ones are taken as if they do not revive in time the fish can drown and the protein wasted It is very sustainable as only the fish in the small pond is affected and nothing goes to waste the entire fish is eaten for small ones including the guts fins, gills, scales and bones. The larger ones the guts are removed mainly the intestines. The stomach and organs are all consumed. They take a very small portion of the fish in the creek. None of these people are obese, gluttony is not something these people know of they do not overeat and over harvest. Life is hard. and resources are scarce. They have been doing this for thousands of years.

I’m Montagnards we used to fish traditional like this too only small fish we caught not the big , the big one didn’t get drunk , I’m 35 years old now , I’m healthy all my friend that I grew up eat fish like these , they are still alive and healthy today.

      Saponins or Rotenone usually. I'm not sure for this plant exactly but here in Europe we use Mullein seeds the same way. Within an Hour they all perk back up, quicker if a good current. Or if you get the fish back into water further you can perk them up sooner. I'm not sure why poison fishing gets a bad rap. If you construct a few temporary damns or even fall and rock traps and such you can confine the Poison to select areas and amounts of fish even. I guess its just when you live WITH Nature not off nature, you observe patterns and methods.

    the place is Guyana not Guiana. Guiana is the old spelling from the British time. Come on if you gonna say that you are a researcher and you studing the place, then try starting with its name first. And these people been doing this for centries now and they still got fish there. Because the place is a rich habitat for fish to grow and multiply in. also that area is preobly being fed by water from some large stream or lake somewhere close by. so more likely that they will be fishing like that for another 1000 year and never finish the fish from the area because it is constantly being replemished.

      The geological feature beneath the circum-Mount Roraima landscape is known as the Guiana Shield. The country is called Guyana. The ongoing research extends beyond one country.

    How can the narrator justify that it does not bring down the population of the fish??Now that same river or rivulet immemorial is supporting more mouths!!The only thing increasing are humans and nature is shrinking.Conservation is the need of the hour especially in terms regarding nature and its resources...irrespective of how sweet you may present it!!

      chao thao kindly understand the concept of weed control / organic pesticides....it is natural and only weeds out a specific strain. Also understand these people are doing it for 500 years+, the destruction (if at all) caused is minimum in comparison to what we are doing currently.
