Thanks Matt, amazing video as always
@@Twilight17Petkotonthe wii version of the OG resident evil 4 is the best version out of the game between the ps2 and GameCube version, because it has the GameCube’s superior graphics and sound but also has the ps2 version’s extra content. Not to mention the Wii’s control for aiming is MUCH better
While this is most likely a coincidence, I find it interesting that elements of the “Hallucination” build of “RE4” are very similar to “Resident Evil: Village”. It’s always interesting to me when game devs pick up on older ideas that didn’t work at the time and finally get to apply them in a game where it really shines. And that Kawamura’s desire for a genuinely scary “Biohazard”/“Resident Evil” game eventually came to fruition with 7 & 8.
For anyone who’s a fan of Resident Evil i really recommend the Itchy Tasty Book mentioned early in the video. It’s an incredible look into the development process of multiple of the franchises games
Had no idea the PS2 version was a downgrade from the original I just remember buying the game in 2010 for my PS2, and having a great time with it. Despite the downgrades, it is still one of my all time favorites
I remember buying 4 at launch in 2005 on GameCube and my launch copy of the remake arrived on Friday. Such an amazing game. Glad they took they're time and delivered the best experience possible
RE4 may be the only time in game dev history where the troubled development and constant changes ended up with giving us the good ending. Sure would have been nice to see the other versions as well but not only did we get spin off series from the ideas, but RE4 is a stone cold classic that revolutioned gaming. It's so polished that you'd never know all the troubles it went through from just playing it. You'd think it was planned to be this way from the beginning. The situation forced accidental genius I guess. It explains how much they fumbled trying to recreate it with RE5 and RE6, when they went into it with the intent on the style from the beginning.
Absolutely legendary game. Easily one of the GOATs. I was one of those naysayers when it first came out. It took the game about 15 minutes to change my mind.
its a legendary action game, but a bad horror game imo, it also paved the way for the destruction of resi evil, hell the remakes are actually closer to the original resi evils than 4 XD difference is the camera angle of 4, now resi evil is going back to its roots that re4 burned and that god for that. still love this game to death though.
I bought this game for GameCube on release day: the GameStop exclusive LE. I didn't even own a GameCube then? I got the GCN about 5 months later and I couldn't put it down, playing it from beginning to end in about 2 days. Amazing game! I just got the Remake and I think that it's a better game than the Dead Space Remake. Both are good, but I feel the RE4 Remake builds on the greatness of RE4. The Dead Space Remake, while gorgeous and playing great, just seems feels like a replacement for the original instead of its own thing.
It seems like the original idea for RE4 came back with the new storyline that kicked off with Village. Ancient virus from underground in Europe that ties to Spencer
I love the tale of RE4. Supposedly a Gamecube exclusive. But it accidentally after several messy development cycles became casually the best thing ever. And has since been ported to just about everything, even 15+ years after its release it got a VR version. Can you imagine this happening today? A game that was just thrown together because the people involved just threw their hands and said fuck it? Oh.. the games we could play.

Well, at the time of the Hallucination build Konami would've just released or was about to release SH3 and so the series was about at its peak, so not really that silly when you remember how the timelines line up.
I want to thank that guy that some call him Johnny for doing the video that sold me on RE 4 Original. While not my first RE game, RE 4 was a fun ride. It was how Johnny described it: a Hollywood action movie. And you know what, my favorite parts of the dialogue were the ballistics joke and the script. First class, I might add. And yes, I have it on the Switch. Though I can't get to the remake right away, I am beyond excited for it. Also, Ada is cool (as in, incredibly cool)
As RE being my favorite franchise, and RE4 being the game I have probably sunk the most hours into, I did not know so much of the narrative behind the game. Great video!
That's so interesting. I've never played DMC, and haven't been an avid player of the Resident Evil games. So I had absolutely no clue that the two had this relation. Very interesting.
It's crazy the development cycle this game had lol. Not only did it go through development hell and back and came out alive and successful ratings wise , it helped practically give Capcom 2 other new IPs to their list, one of them especially becoming very popular aka Devil May Cry. It's insane on what happens behind the scenes in the game dev world sometimes. Never get tired of these what happened stories
McMuscles, have you done a "What Happun?!" episode on Code: Veronica? I'd like to see CAPCOM remake CV if they keep making revivals as good as the RE 4: Remake. :)
It's crazy to think that the development of one game led to the creation of 2 awesome studios (clover and after platinum games) the creation of one of the most important character action series and at the same time the game being developed being one of the most influential and important games of all time
It's always funny looking back at people calling RE2 "the gaming event of 1998," because 1998 was such a great year for video games. RE2 was released in January, but the end of the year would also see Metal Gear Solid and Ocarina of Time, as well as Pokemon finally being released in the west. So yeah, RE2 was great, but was ultimately a drop in the bucket in one of the greatest years for gaming.
Great video, Matt. The development history of this game is certainly fascinating. One of those few tales of development hell when the end product turned out great. It spawning another great franchise in Devil May Cry in the process is just the cherry on top.
I really hope after this Capcom puts their modern IPs on the backburner for as while. Give your legacy IPs some love for Peet’s sake. As much as RE has been as good as it can be(although 4 remake removes a lot of that cheese that made the original so fun, but Capcom) I think diversity is very much needed.
Aside from collections, Capcom absolutely should spread the love a bit more, I agree. But you might want to play/watch more RE4 remake. Practically everything Leon says is a cheesy action one-liner during gameplay.
@@MattMcMuscles Oh that’s not to say the game has its own kind of cheese, it does. I’ve watched the playthrough and it made some improvements, including Leon and Ashley’s dynamic. I just feel…they exchanged some of the old elements to intensify the seriousness angle. I feel like part of RE4’s charm is that it was serious…but also knows it ‘shoots the barrel’ if you know what I mean. Like the giant robot, movie laser scene, IT and even Leon’s lines. Part that charm is like they know its ridiculous, but played sincerely. Not to take away everything that the game has done, and I’m happy it did well. It’s just, RE4 is one of those games to where a simple remaster would’ve been more than enough like Metroid Prime.
The remake seems like it cranked the cheese up more. Before, Leon never said anything like "bill me for the repairs later" whilst being chased by a mob of violent villagers.
@@Beforezzz That’s also true. What I meant to say was with cut content that made the OG RE4 so memorable to the fanbase, despite the improvements that the remake added. Was a remake of RE4 necessary? I personally felt like a remaster in the form of what Metroid Prime recently done would be more than enough, without taking away anything. But that’s my opinion.
I used to play the demo at the eb games in our mall for hours on end. I have nothing but fond memories of the original, and the remake captures that nostalgia so perfectly it’s truly impressive. Thanks for chronicling the history like this Matt, awesome video!
I actually picked up the original to try it out before the remake and needless to say it was amazing. There was a bit of a learning curve as I was playing on the Gamecube so I wasn't fully used to the controller. However I enjoyed it and currently playing the remake. Why does Resident Evil 0 always get left out of all these conversations? 😅 I always see people saying "what's after remaking RE4? Code Veronica or RE5?" or talking about how they have to go back to the beginning & remake the first game. But what about RE0?! Poor game apparently wasn't even talked about within Capcom around this time 🤣
Very interesting to learn that Clover Studio was effectively an apology to Mikami for all this. So then Okami owes it's existence somewhat to RE4? Never knew!
Not exclusively for that reason. Mikami, Kamiya and others felt since they had created so many high profile games for Capcom, they should have more freedom to make the games they wanted.

I've been a RE fan for pretty much my whole life thanks to my dad, I still remember the day we went to buy and play the OG RE4 on our PS2, he was absolutely blown away about pretty much everything and it became one of his favorite games of all time, for the longest time it has also been one of mine and now playing the remake it's amazing to see that the love for this game hasn't decayed one single bit, I even sent my dad some gameplay to hype him up too! Thanks Matt, amazing video as always
Yeah, I ok with GameCube and Wii version of Resident Evil 4 having good graphics.
Had no idea the PS2 version was a downgrade from the original
I just remember buying the game in 2010 for my PS2, and having a great time with it. Despite the downgrades, it is still one of my all time favorites
I remember buying 4 at launch in 2005 on GameCube and my launch copy of the remake arrived on Friday.
Such an amazing game. Glad they took they're time and delivered the best experience possible
Mikami must be a Hydra with all the heads he had to cut off.
Wouldn’t that make him Heracles though?
@@bigbossultimate he's cutting his own heads.
The replayability is outstanding, especially with the weapon upgrades.
Shinji Mikami is a true legend of the video game industry. His "Vanquish" doesn't get enough love and attention.
True, to this day I think it's a real shame and a crime that we never had Vanquish 2
@@DISMOTRON Totally agree. Especially considering how the game ended...
@@NoNicknameRequired What are you talking about, Sam went on to become a Brazilian samurai in MGR, what better sequel can you ask for?
Vanquish was such a banger of a game. They just don't make em like that anymore.
And he's back at it again with Hi-Fi Rush
It seems like the original idea for RE4 came back with the new storyline that kicked off with Village. Ancient virus from underground in Europe that ties to Spencer
I love the tale of RE4. Supposedly a Gamecube exclusive. But it accidentally after several messy development cycles became casually the best thing ever. And has since been ported to just about everything, even 15+ years after its release it got a VR version.
Can you imagine this happening today? A game that was just thrown together because the people involved just threw their hands and said fuck it? Oh.. the games we could play.
plenty of games today are just as good, if not better than re4. whats up with this fanbase and their delusional "back in my day" narrative lol?
@@flamingmanure Show me one modern title that is as smart and original as RE4 was and to a degree still is.
I would agree with you on many other titles, but RE4 is special. Even its remake was just a kinda better but worse version of it.
@@MizukiTheUnderPro resident evil 7, legend of Zelda breath of the wild,Metroid dread, elden ring, god of war ragnorock, monster hunter world, dragon ball fighterZ and many more.
I didn't expect this at all. But I love the twist. Keep up the good work.
18:24 Kinda funny how they were taking inspiration from SH considering how they took a massive dive and RE is currently one of the best series at the moment.
Well, at the time of the Hallucination build Konami would've just released or was about to release SH3 and so the series was about at its peak, so not really that silly when you remember how the timelines line up.
This is the episode of Wha Happun I've wanted the most since the series debuted, and it did not disappoint. Well done Matt!
I could just listen to Matt's superlative RE4 merchant impression all day and never grow tired of it! 😁
Hideki kamiya looks like a bro you'd chill with at a skate park back in the early 2000s lol
I feel like Mikami will be retiring but I hope he decides to develop his ideal true horror game for better or worse.
As RE being my favorite franchise, and RE4 being the game I have probably sunk the most hours into, I did not know so much of the narrative behind the game. Great video!
Gabe Newell would be jealous of Mikami’s “when it’s done” mentality.
The concept of Devil May Cry spun from RE4? Imagine if this was actually happening? Virgil won't be motivated and we'll see Wesker do it instead.
An RE game that was so radically different in its early development that it came a brand new game entirely.
"What Happened? -Resident Evil 4 HD Turbo Alpha 3.0 & Knuckles, featuring Dante from the Devil May Cry series"
To be fair, Mikami isn't wrong. The modern RE has interesting gameplay, but like the zombies, the series story is full of holes and nonsense
Hit'em with the Bingo Roundhouse
I used to play the demo at the eb games in our mall for hours on end. I have nothing but fond memories of the original, and the remake captures that nostalgia so perfectly it’s truly impressive. Thanks for chronicling the history like this Matt, awesome video!
They need to remake Devil May Cry 1 & 2. DMC is just as important to gaming as RE and it created an entire genre just like RE did.
Damn, that hook man prototype actually looks really fucking cool. I hope at some point in the future we get to see what it could have turned out to be
Personally, graphics and framerate issues aside, Survivor walked so 7 could run and Village could fly.
I actually picked up the original to try it out before the remake and needless to say it was amazing. There was a bit of a learning curve as I was playing on the Gamecube so I wasn't fully used to the controller. However I enjoyed it and currently playing the remake. I may have my critics on the original but I loved it and glad its apart of my Resident Evil Collection
The controls are the part that aged the worst. I would have been happy with a re-release that overhauled the controls. But the remake seems ok so far.
@@ralphengland8559 the Wii version is the best in controls, to the point it makes me wish there was a special Wii difficulty where they take advantage of your better aiming capabilities.
I played RE4 in VR on the Oculus last year and I honestly had a great time. Playing again on PC and although it's great, you can't hold a candle to how it felt playing this on the Gamecube after classes were over in high school.
re4 will always be one of my favorite games when growing up. TY Matt, this was a great insight video as I remember feeling betrayed when it was announced for PS2🥺 this video in special hits hard for me because I was a GameCube kid and missed a lot of games since we simply never got them in the console.

Great video! I still have my GCN copy. I remember when I played the PS2 versión the downgrade was so obvious that not even the separate ways campaign save my interest and went back to the GCN. Even with the remake now released, I still believe that GCN original RE4 stills holds up quite well.
What Happened?:
Nickelodeon All Star Brawl
Fear Effect
Leisure Suit Larry 4
Remember when this game was supposed to be a Game Cube exclusive? Yeah, now it is avaliable for every bloody machine that connects to a screen.
Awesome to see NervousNick helped edit this video. I feel like I haven't seen him since the old ScrewAttack days.

@@Nervous_Nick Never did get to see your reaction to Banjo and Kazooie joining Smash.
The rare 1 in a million lightning bolt when a combination of open-minded ambition & developmental sweat/sacrifices not only resulted in one of the most influential, highest quality games;
But also spun-off a beloved action franchise from a bug found in one of it’s old builds.
My favorite game of all time! I'm patiently waiting for my re4 remake collector's edition to be delivered.
Honestly I prefer the OG RE4 to the remake it just feels better sure the graphics aren't amazibg and new Ashley is 1) much easier on the eyes and 2) WAY less grating. There just felt like there was more in the OG
Sup Matthew, right on time for the RE hype train! Although it was a well documented story, it never gets old to listening again with a McTwist 👍🏼
Kamiya left working on Resident Evil 4 because it was too dark, and he wanted to fill our dark souls with LIIIIGHT!
Doom 3 seems like another curious case to cover
10:43 bro the NOISE that bit got me. just the thought of mikami being all like "uh yeah WTF is this???"

This game is hilarious, but i'm gonna make it more funny for all of you. First of all, in spanish a lot of words have diferent meaning it depends of the country you are speaking in, knowing this, when the "ganados" say "cogedlo, cogedlo" in Spain means "grab him!" But if you are from south america, it means "fuck him!". Truly a masterpiece
A "What Happened?" video for Breath of Fire 6 needs to happen. Between Yoshinori Ono, Kazunori Sugiura, and the Capcom Korea folk that list BoF6 in their LinkedIn, there are stories that need to be told!
You know at this point Matt may as well just do a video on EVERY single Capcom game!
I find fascinating when during developement of a sequel you find ideas for new games
Imagine how many games are still conceptualized but haven't go further due to studio's executives that find the idea of new games not profitable (something that always was the case in any industry at almost every era you can imagine)
Love these RE What Happened vids. I'm now curious if Capcom had trouble with RE5 in comparison to 4 and 6. Probably not, but it would be an interesting topic if there was.
I mainly remember some idiots bitching about it being racist for shooting people in a part of the world where they happen to be the majority...

I don't know if there's enough information, but you should do a what happened on resident evil revelations. That reveal trailer had HUNK, Chris and Jill pointing guns at each other, A mystery guy in a chair, and what looks like the Spencer mansion steps getting flooded. Not even remotely close to the game they actually put out.

i just beat the remake and it is so so good, but you can’t replace the original. both are 10s
Re4 was my MOST replayed game of the series for me. Scared my as a little kid
I wanted this for the OG resident evils 1-3 to be like RE 4 (2005) and the spin offs too
Mikami is one of the best directors in the gaming industry since the start of all this. The man not only guide his team to create what we know today as Survival Horror, but he reinvented and, I may say, perfected it with the RE1 Remake and then, again, gave RE new life with RE4. The man is like a fucking machine, so much talent and good eye to create and lead projects.
Note: not even mentioning all the projects beside the RE brand such as The Evil Within, Dino Crisis and the really underrated God Hand and Vanquish
Your videos are full of little nods to the source material or the series as a whole and I highly appreciate them! They feel like little inside jokes that only real fans could write and real fans could understand! Great job on the writing!
Perfect timing Mr. Matt.
Please do a What Happened? with The Legend of Dragoon. A PS1 game that only had one game but is still loved by fans of the game but left behind by Sony.
Why does Resident Evil 0 always get left out of all these conversations? 😅
I always see people saying "what's after remaking RE4? Code Veronica or RE5?" or talking about how they have to go back to the beginning & remake the first game. But what about RE0?! Poor game apparently wasn't even talked about within Capcom around this time 🤣
28:40 Oh snap! I thought I was the only one who noticed Gamecube looked like a lunch box and called it that.
Ain't surprised most criticism were for its controls, seeing it being ported on tons of platforms.
Monsters... Guess after this there'll be one less to worry about. This games troubled production that is!
Plus Mikami would use the RE4 over the shoulder camera and difficult slider as core mechanics for Godhand as well.
