Jim Steinman was an amazing songwriter, composer, piano player and producer. And this song KILLS IT whenever it's used. Footloose, Short Circuit 2, Shrek 2, and Saints Row the Third... the last one is during a mission where you can choose vengeance or saving your friends. I choose saving Shaundi and company Every. Single. TIME. Which is the canon ending because the game producers couldn't conceive of any way their Boss WOULDN'T do this.
ALSO on Glee, where the future Supergirl Melissa Benoist sang it but dressed up as a knockoff Wonder Woman... still absolutely hilarious in hindsight. (Also how long it took them to do a musical episode with two of the better singers from Glee and the original Collins from RENT in the casts of Supergirl and The Flash, AND a DC character named the Music Meister that they got _another_ of the stronger Glee singers to play, but I digress.)

Interesting you mentioned Total Eclipse Of The Heart, because the other link between that and Holding Out For A Hero is none other than Jim Steinman (of Mealoaf collaboration fame) - both songs have that Steinman bombast we know and love.
I remember Holding Out For A Hero first from being the theme tune to the TV show "Cover Up", but that version was sung by someone else - it wasn't until many years later that I found out Bonnie did a version (and today is the first time I'd seen the video for it!).

It was an action series called "COVER UP."The show is about two adventurers who pose as a model and photographer while on location for their missions, which are actually for a CIA organization. One of the stars wise career was just beginning to take off was Jon-Erik Hexum. Sadly he accidentally shot himself with a prop gun on set.

@@aura81295 maybe because it was an 80’s pop ballad and that’s not really Cheap Trick’s sound. I personally don’t have issues with bands doing ballads, but I can understand how fans can be put off by songs like that.

I love this song. Its so 80s 😂 its also very much the "wannabe alpha chad theme song" but at the same time its a song that is encouraging women to ask for more from their men (which lets be real, any dude who calls themselves an "alpha" isnt one lol) so for me as a woman this is just a great, fun and fantastical song that lots of women have dreamed about (but not all). But yeah anyone who takes this song too seriously needs to just chill 😂

Produced by the late Jim Steinman.
Written by him and Dean Pitchford. Featured in the soundtrack to the movie 🎥 Footloose. Great 👍
The late Jim Steinman wrote for many musicians. Dean Pitchford is the co writer in every song of this movie 🎥 except for the bonus songs.

This song was used in a hit US tv show back in the 80's 'Cover Up' a Glen A Larson creation. The tv show came out the same year (1984) so i suspect the song was written specifically for this tv show.

Men don’t expect a supermodel. They are attracted to them. A woman can just be normal looking, but if she’s a good cook and she treats him well he’ll lay down his life for her

Hey Black Pegasus, I'll bet you're lady sees you just that way. For the last 35 years "my hero" has been a skinny little dude whose fiery steed is the 18 wheeler he drives to support his family. You're right that too many women, back when this song was released through now, are looking for some perfect guy with the perfect hair, fancy car, and lots of money. All the while overlooking the quite man in the corner who would make her his world and treat her like a queen.

    Fun Facts
This song was written by Jim Steinman & Dean Pitchford.
Steinman is known for his collaborations with Meatloaf. He's written I'll Do Anything for Love (But I Won't Do That), Bat Out of Hell & more.
The opening chorus as well as melody is taken from Jim Steinman's song "Stark Raving Love" from the solo album "Bad for Good" Which I do recommend listening to.
This song was used for the Kevin Bacon film Footloose, a film Dean Pitchford wrote. It was also in Short Circuit 2 & others.
The song was later covered for Shrek 2.
This wouldn't be the last time Bonnie Tyler & Jim Steinman would collaborate. They would work on Total Eclipse of the Heart (which you've listened to) and others.
This would be one of the few Steinman songs Meatloaf didn't cover as most of Steinman's popular songs were covered by him or originated by him.
The song is representative of Ariel, the lead female character who's a small town girl and daughter of the local minister with Kevin Bacons character Ren as the city boy who comes to sweep her off her feet and make a heroic change.

This is such a great song! Does anyone remember it from Shrek 2? It was performed by the Fairy Godmother. British comedian/actress Jennifer Saunders voiced/sang the Fairy Godmother. I've been a fan for decades and had no clue she could sing! It's awesome. But this is truly the OG version!
