I’m sure it blew your mind when you found out this was written by Jim Steinman who wrote all of Meat Loaf’s songs.
This is so Jim Steinman - you can imagine Meat Loaf doing his own version just as theatrical and over the top. Would love to see competing versions including videos. Mind blowing.
God I’m so happy to have grown up in the 80’s❤❤❤
He also wrote for Celina Dion, Air Supply, Barry Manilow, Sisters of Mercy, etc.
Well, the Steinman and Meat Loaf team did produce many fine songs, but Meat Loaf did material from many different writers over the years. One fine example of this is "I'd Lie For You (And That's The Truth)" which was written by Diane Warren.
This song was originally meant to be in a musical about Vampires. It actually was included 2002 in the originally planned Dance of the Vampires musical...and the song became popular again.
Her rasp is her trademark sound…. I used to think of her as a female Rod Stewart when this sing was out. The video style is very 80’s. Her stuff is fire🔥
She did not have it in her earlier songs in the 1970s like Lost in France but it is a result of a vocal cord nodule operation in the mid to late 1970s
Yes! Same! Very Rod Stewart-esque 🇦🇺🐨🇦🇺
Couldn't agree more! 🤙
Her and Kim Carnes have very unique voices.
A movie production company contracted Jim Steinman to have a song written for the movie. This was the song he wrote, and the original title was "Love Amongst the Vampires". So, think about that for awhile.
This song reached #1 on the Billboard chart. The #2 song was "Making Love out of Nothing At All" by Air Supply, also written by Jim Steinman.
A feat I don't think have been matched as Lennon and McCartney alternated their credits between Lennon/McCartney and McCartney/Lennon as they didn't want one of them to be placed above the other for their whole career.
Bonnie Tyler also did a cover version of Making Love out of nothing...
A gazillion times better than the original.
Air Supply are from Australia but living in America now
Bonnie Tyler legendary... Dear God, bring back the 80s please.. thank you Amen this is the original version and only version in my opinion.
yes yes
Anything pre 90’s would be wonderful.
Somewhere along the way we lost the emotion. Now everything needs to be broody and serious or it will be considered "cringe".
I would like the same 4 the 70s. She had a hit in the 70s ALSO Its a Heart ache
Except for some of the videos... like this one.
Do, It’s a Heartache. Best raspiness, ever. And it will break ya.
💯👍🔥
Everyone was on drugs in the 80s, so stop trying to figure out what we were doing. We don't even know what we were doing...lol.
Jim Steinman compositions are easy to spot if you're a 70s and 80s kid. They're usually epics. That's it. Simple, right? 🤣🤣🤣❤❤❤
A few years ago I watched "Streets of Fire" for the first time. Didn't even have to look at the credits I instantly recognized Jim's songs.
Welsh singer Bonnie Tyler first recorded "Total Eclipse of the Heart" in 1982 and released it in 1983 on her fifth studio album, Faster Than the Speed of Night. Jim Steinman wrote and produced the song, which is considered a pop rock and power pop ballad. He also wrote songs for Meatloaf.
The song, a duet with Rory Dodd, became Tyler's biggest career hit, topping the UK Singles Chart, and becoming the fifth-best-selling single in 1983 in the United Kingdom. In the United States, the single spent four weeks at the top of the charts
Jim Steinman (wrote song) sings the turn around part and is playing the piano. He wrote Meatloaf’s songs.
Bells Palsy, temporary but alarming when you can't move half of your face. Love this song one of my favorites. Hope you play Annie Lennox, Sweet Dreams. Thanks Black Pegasus!👍❤️
Jim Steinman had the number one and number two songs for a period of time in 1983:
Total Eclipse of the Heart, and Making Love out of Nothing at all, by Air Supply.
This was some kind of concept piece written for a vampire musical that never happened, written in the rock opera style. It is the original version, though it was cut down for radio since it is so long. Bonnie didn't write it herself. I can't remember the name, but I know the guy wrote my favorite song for Air Supply and I think he might have written some songs for Meatloaf, too. I believe the male singer was someone from her band.
So glad someone brought up the vampire musical. It's Tanz der Vampire. ETA -- Dance of the Vampires.
Bonny Taylor GREAT VOICE........
BP is taking me all the way through stuff I forgot about in the 1980s between 4th and 12th grades. This is great.
Holding Out for a Hero. Total Eclipse and a lot of her songs were written by Jim Steinman who wrote all Meatloaf's songs as well. Drama, passion, fabulous mini rock operas. Extravaganzas of the best kind. By the way, this son was a massive hit! And when people have a rasp in their voice, it's a good thing and they don't take it out!
This song still brings chills over me when I listen to it... goosebumps... every time... love it. Jim Steinman... genius songwriter... love a lot of his stuff... The video was trippy... but the song is beautiful...
Back in the 80's I wanted so much to be her... she was an inspiration... but I was far too shy to ever sing in public so I knew that was nothing but a dream... but I still love to sing... just to myself.
Oh the 80.s & the 90,s.. my timeline when i was growing up,so many songs and many never forgotten its like a treasure chest and gold can be found..i have a huge varied taste so from ultravox ,to ELO,to transvision vamp i was always in the mood for tunes.
Bonnie Tyler ! Loved her songs. She used to spend sometime during Summer at our country Portugal where she had a house in the South at Algarve
The classic age of music videos. It's an artform of it's own.
It was originally written as a vampire love song which explains some of the darker themes.
Holding Out for a Hero! You will love it!
A fab welsh lady singer...amazing 😊
Love her raspy voice ❤
This song is fantastic, here voice is awesome 🙏
Rory Dodd is the background singer singing "turn around bright eyes". Jim Steinman wrote the song. Bonnie Tyler's raspy voice is due to surgery on her vocal cords that left her with the rasp in her voice. Around the same time this was released, Jim Steinman had Air Supply record his "Making Love Out of Nothing At All" which I believe you already reacted to. He also had Barry Manilow record his "Read 'Em And Weep", and Barbra Streisand record his "Left In the Dark". Jim Steinman also released a single he wrote "Rock And Roll Dreams Come Through". All of these charted on the Hot 100.
Living in a powder keg and giving off sparks. That's a powerful line
Legend she is!
This is the first time I have seen this video. I know the song, but wow! Love your reaction!
This is a JAM!!
Bonnie Tyler had a hit early on called It’s A Heartache and a hit from the Footloose soundtrack called Holding Out For A Hero.
Miranda Lambert song that she co-wrote and sang at the ACM awards in 2017, is a must for anyone who loves songs with meanings.
You have to remember, the music video was a brand new concept in the 80s. Bands started out hating them because they saw them as comnercials for the song. A few artists saw the potential to make them artsy like mini movies. Michael Jackson and Madonna were the first to really exploit their potential.
yes! Bonnie Did perform "Holding out for a hero". Im not totally sure if she was the original or a cover. (footloose, Shrek 2, etc)
She had to have vocal cord surgery and she started singing to soon after it, and that's what caused the raspyness, but it works, she's freaking amazing, one of my favorite female artists
Song so good. The video is fuc**** wild.
Wooooowwww.. I can't believe you're doing this reaction!! This is my favourite tune ever!! Doesn't matter really what version this original, the dance version... Literally any!! It's hit tub time machine who did that muther f**k around hun!! N exactly what my ex used to do too it everytime I had playing from that moment of film just to wind me up hahahahahaha honestly but wouldn't tell him this... Its definitely in my head every single time hours kicks in 🤣😂🤣😂
I remember when this song was popular, but I don't remember this video! Crazy 80s man.
Now were talking !!! High school years back in one BT song !!! 😂😂😂😂
FYI the choir was exactly the same used by Steinman with Meat Loaf and Air Supply supertube "Making love out of nothing at all". Jim Steinman was a pure genius...
80's videos had to be outrageous and artistic to get played on MTV.
Haha, we heard these songs nonstop on the radio so we didn't have to focus so much on the videos.... probably would've freaked me out too!
I do admit sometimes music videos can ruin first time experiences to a song just cause most ppl heard these songs on the radio for the first time
I love that you’ve been on a roll of bangers!! Keeps me coming back to the channel everyday. I love this song-the video not so much- you know those vids that are more a distraction-add nothing to the performance.
Russel Mulcahy basically invented the modern music video - he used to just get ideas and try them - sometimes they worked spectacularly well sometimes they didn't but at the time nobody had done this stuff before. Bonnie famously didn't get what he was going for here and really didn't like it and he told her trust me this works - the song became a massive hit.
It's the 80s, that explains the video. Agree loincloth ballerina was the best part of the video! She's Welsh and that rasp is her calling card, she's amazing one of a kind.
This was everything in 1983🔥🔥
You gotta check out Bonnie's "Holding out for a Hero" song is an awesome 80s song Highlighted in the movie Short Circuit and others total 🔥🔥🔥🔥
I do appreciate the older music for the fact you have artists with unique aspects to their voices. I think it can help convey more emotion and expression than modern autotuned cookie cutter musicianship.
MEATLOAF sings "turn around," for anyone who didn't know.
Jim Steinman wrote this as part of an rock opera about Vampires
Jim Steinman originally wrote this song for Meat Loaf. Unfortunately, Meat Loaf was going through that period where he lost his voice and wasn't able to do any singing. The song became available, and Steinman offered to Bonnie Tyler after she asked him to produce her next album.
Holding out for a hero
The "Turn around" part is singer Rory Dodd
You do realize, don't you, that VIDEOS were never part of MUSIC until MTV came along in the early '80s. I see this all the time. People will judge a song that was recorded in the '60s or '70s by the video that accompnies it, when in fact, the video never existed until some schlub decided to produce one to put with the song on TH-cam.
This is a vampire's love song. Itt was ,according to Meatloaf, written for him. Jim Steinman said he wrote it foe himself.
Ahhhhh, the 80s. When lyrics and/or videos didn't have to make any damn sense! Don't try to figure it out, just go with it. ;)
Once you realize the video was directed by the same guy who made Highlander, it maybe makes a little more sense. Russell Mulcahy kicked a lot of ass on early MTV.
Best thing to come out of Wales...
This song was written by the writer and producer of Meat Loaf she approached him after watching a meat loaf performance and hired him, and this was a duet
That switch up is textbook Jim Steinman
She's from Wales 😅 has that accent in her voice
Her voice sounds like this because she had a botched throat surgery. She wasn't trying to change her voice but is easily recognized for her beautiful voice.
Yes, she sings “Holding Out For A Hero.” The video is pretty cool. Celine Dione sings “it’s All Coming Back To Me Now,” also written by Jim Steinman.
You over analyze these videos. In the 80’s most videos only have a tenuous connection to the song.
Holding out for a hero is also a Jim Steinman song.
From Wales UK 👍👍
Total Eclipse of the Heart was first done by Bonnie Tyler.
If you've trained your dog to "turn around" on a verbal command, it's fun to play this song to your dog.
Very stranger things.. Lol great voice!
Their eyes are bright because they are vampires or something. Jim Steinman worked on a vampire musical for a long time so a lot of his songs started out as vampire love songs. Bat out of Hell etc.
The “Turn Around “ part is Canadian Singer Rory Dodd - en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rory_Dodd
I agree. 80s videos hardly ever made sense and were at times very weird. Her raspy voice was common in the 80s like rod stewart, axel rose, Melissa ethridege, Joe cocker, Bryan Adam’s, Kurt cobain, Steven Tyler, Joan Jett, Janis Joplin and so on.
Bonnie's voice changed after a throat operation in the late 70's. Listen to her music prior to 1974, and you'll hear the difference.
Video is for a sci fi/fantasy movie that wasnt released, only this song is released, hence the strangeness of the video
Absolutely luv the song, never understood the video lol
Cool fact: This song is about a human woman deciding to let her vampire lover turn her into one them despite the despair it will cause. Now the lyrics will make complete sense to you.
I want you to react to the literal music video of this. It's hilarious.
This is one of the great 1980s batshit crazy music videos. Peter Gabriel’s Sledgehammer and Genesis’ Land of Confusion are also on that list.
Check out the literal video of this song. It takes the video and replaces the lyrics with ones that describe what is happening in the video. 😂
Bonnie Tyler, the FEMALE version of Rod Stewart!
❤❤❤❤❤❤
Must react to the "literal" version of the music video of this song, it is hilarious!!!!!!!
Meatloaf is the male singer (turn around) and it's a love song for vampires
you need to watch the literal version, i'm sure it is still kicking around youtube somewhere
Only Jim Steinman could make a story about an illicit love affair between a teacher and her laser-eyed ninja student at a private school for dancers a hit. ;)
Now imagine a male singer having school girls dancing and using the same lyrics.
Staring at the swim team gets you killed by a gang of dancing ninja men who know how to twirl.
This song was originaly written for a musical about vampires!!! Lol
Listen to Lost in France to hear her original voice.
There a metal version of this song you might want to check out it has Doro and Rob Halfford from Judas priest .it Rocks.
I can't hear this song and not think of the Hurra Torpedo cover featuring tracksuits, butt cracks, and kitchen appliances.
I think this just a crazy love song and typically crazy music vid from the 80's full of zany symbolism. Didn't have to make much sense was just an experience.
This has all the cheesy effects of that time 80s but I still love it.
Bro, stop focusing on and trying to figure out 1980's videos, LOL.
Her stuff kind of falls in the Meat Loaf genre to me, sort of the operatic theatric stuff with lots of pace change and vocal range. It's not an exact comparison, no one is Meta Loaf.
FINISH IT!!!
Played this endlessly when it came out, probably annoyed the brown stuff out of my neighbours but it was worth it. Keeping on the vampire theme, check out Love Song For A Vampire by Annie Lennox👍
funny thing about this song is its not really about love, and more on about being turned into a vampier
I know this song from back then because it is so good, but strangely, I don’t remember the video. Seeing it now, it’s weird.
Another banger from Jim Steinman who wrote for Meatloaf
Silent Running by Mike and the Mechanics
Thar song was so overplay on the radio it became revolting
