    I don't play video games and have never commented on one of your videos before. I am just a Tolkien fan who has read all of his works numerous times and know the history of Arda better than almost anyone else I have ever met or seen make commentary online. This is why I watch your videos. You're like me & I love hearing you talk about what you know of Tolkien's world. Sometimes you do mess up, but I understand why. With the Appendices to LotR, The Silmarillion, Unfinished Tales, and The Histories of Middle-earth, there is a lot of information, sometimes contradictory, to remember. So I don't bother to correct you. But in this video, you need to be corrected. You apologized profusely, claiming that you don't know how to speak Quenya. Then you recited Cirion's words with perfect Quenyan pronunciation. I put on your vids when I'm getting ready for work or doing the dishes so I have some background noise to listen to that I will enjoy & you never disappoint me. I would love to meet you & discuss the nature of Tom Bombadil or whether or not Radagast strayed from the reason he was sent to Middle-earth since he was chosen by Yavanna. Keep educating people. Thank you!

    Good video and summary :)
    Boromir I is a badass ^^
    And Thorongil knew his strategy as a true TATW Gondor-player: wing clip Umbar, ASAP, haha.
    Aye. Denethor II was a great man and devoted steward, and a sad tale of fall from grace, through grief and pride. "He was proud, but this was by no means merely personal: he loved Gondor and its people, and deemed himself appointed by destiny to lead them in this desperate time." -UT

    Very well done! Hoping you could do the Riddermark or the Longbeards. Also, "A Few Added Details and Nitpicks":
    -I forgot where it is mentioned, but it is mentioned that there were more men speaking Sindarin than elves speaking Sindarin. I think it goes like this: French/Latin = Quenya, English = Sindarin/Westron.
    -Déor of Rohan tried to bring in Gondor so that they could besiege Angrenost, because the Rohirrim could not overthrow the Hill-men of Dunland from it's strong walls. Déor didn't call them for defense, rather, he called them for an offense against the Hill-men.
    -Also relating to the events during Déor's reign: The captains of the garrison of Angrenost died out, and were replaced by Hill-men friendly captains. After that time, the Hill-men raided the Westfold. Déor rode out with a host to investigate. There, he found and defeated a great Dunlending force. When he sent out riders to Angrenost, they were met by arrows. After Déor tried to call in Gondor, he left a great force of riders in northern Westfold.
    -Saruman the White was not granted Orthanc during the wars of Gondor and Rohan. He was granted that AFTER the wars, during the feast in Meduseld to celebrate the coronation of King Fréaláf of Rohan.
    -Your timeline is a little messed up. You said that in 2758, Gondor was assailed by three great fleets from Umbar and the South, and after that, you say that 40 years later, Gondor was again assailed by Corsairs, but there is no mention of that ever happening.
    -Folcwine actually never rode to war. Only his two sons did. Folcred and Fastred fought honorably, Folcred and Fastred fought valiantly, and Folcred and Fastred died.
    -Thorongil also served King Thengel of Rohan for a time.
    -It's worth mentioning that the Kings of Rohan are the direct descendants of *Vidugavia*.

      +Malgalad “The Blade of Fire” Naurmegil The last point, the second to last point, the first point and the second point would all be said in the Rohan video.

(Rohan being my second favorite faction, the first being Gondor) And after that, the history of the Naugrim of the Longbeards in their mighty abode of Hadhodrond under the peaks of the Hithaeglir. (I hope you know those words I said) :)

    @anamaliify ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I am a tad late to this, it must be said. Have always been interested in the lore of the tales and folks of Middle Earth, but never seem to get around to getting hands on the literature!
    Anyway, a thought struck me whilst watching this and it's predecessors that I thought I'd share, see if anyone more knowledgable has anything to add. The though is thus -
    It strikes me that despite many great promises, despite a rich and impressive history of bravery, might and descencion from the Númenorians and despite many having ridden to the aid Gondor in it's time of need - that Gondor never seems to return the favour. It seems to me little wonder that Theoden needed some convincing to ride to their aid in what came to be known as the Battle of/for Pellenor fields (?) when it would seem that history has time and again shown Gondor to look only to it's own wellbeing in times of great strife.
    To my mind, combined with their militarily aggressive behaviour in earlier years, and their pretentions of grandiour and sense of superiority over the other realms of Men - this makes them a much lesser "Good" than they are often portrayed. Which of course makes them much more realistic and interesting, I just thought it was an illuminating overview.
    All that said, many thanks for the well crafted and interesting videos (years ago though they may have been!) and perhaps this will be a driving force behind me finally reading up on the source material!

      Just finished watching this one today, many more to go! And here I thought I was the only one still going through this lore, seeing as this was released years ago. Anyway, your point of view seems interesting enough for me to agree with it, and I would go so far as to say that a thousand years without communication with another Numenorean brethren (Arnor) seems preposterous. Gondor really was too high and mighty for its own sake so most of the trouble they got was kind of deserved.

    Arachir, will you do a video on the Last Alliance? Who was there? Were there dwarves? If not, why not? Who was chased into the Dead Marshes? Who became rose to Lordship after this battle because of deaths? What parts of the map were the men from? What about the Elves?
    Where was it fought? Seems like a HUGE area of Mordor if it was at Mt. Doom and the dead marches.

  • @Wolfeson28
    @Wolfeson28 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    I always find discussions about Denethor and his true personality interesting, largely because I think the movie portrays him poorly. From my reading of his scenes in the books, I consider him to be more of a sympathetic character (who has his flaws, but is still largely good), who shoulders a very heavy burden as best he can, but is ultimately overwhelmed by it. I consider his final state to be more overwhelmed by grief and despair than the vindictive asshole he is portrayed as in the films.
    As you mentioned, the fact that he was able to use the palantir for decades and avoid being corrupted by Sauron's influence all the while speaks very strongly about his character. Furthermore, during the scenes in RoTK prior to Faramir's wounding, Denethor still appears as a wise and resolute leader, despite the fact that Boromir's death weighs heavily on him. He does have his flaws - namely pride and a degree of paranoia toward Gandalf - but he remains committed to his central duty of defending Gondor. The apparent death of Faramir is simply the straw that breaks the camel's back and sends him into his final despair. But in all fairness, after decades of mental battle with Sauron, decades of defending Gondor against the seemingly limitless armies of Mordor (made to seem even more so by Sauron's influence on the palantir), the apparently imminent and inevitable fall of his realm, AND the (apparent) deaths of both his sons in a very short time, who wouldn't feel that there is nothing left in the world to hope for? Denethor's only sin in that respect is simply not being an Aragorn, a Gandalf, or a Frodo.

    The Prince Imrahil was present at the battle at the black gate I'm sure and his banner was flying along side the white horse on green on hill 2. Aragorn had planted his banner on hill one and stood with Elrond's sons and Gandalf and the Rangers who survived the Pelennor. Some captain was in charge of the city I think either the captain of the citatel or guard his name escapes me but The Prince was truly acting steward (yet for a while) he just didn't stay behind when they marched off to doom

    I don't recall the films even dealing with Eomer's kingship. They don't say that Eowen became the queen, unless I missed something. Now that I think about it, they skipped over Rohan completely at the end of the film.

    • @manicoasis4200
      @manicoasis4200 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      To be fair they have abandoned a lot of the scenes they planned to put in the movie for time constraints, (even in the extended version, such as Faramir getting married to Eowyn) so I don't know if they didn't shoot it or if they intentionally left it out (probably because none of the fellowship members were directly connected to the kingdom, and that was their sole focus) Eomer becomes king yes, but Eowyn had married Faramir and lived the rest of her life in Ithilien with him I believe.

      Where is the helm and the hauberk, and the bright hair flowing?
      Where is the hand on the harpstring, and the red fire glowing?
      Where is the spring and the harvest and the tall corn growing?
      They have passed like rain on the mountain, like a wind in the meadow;
      The days have gone down in the West behind the hills into shadow.
      Who shall gather the smoke of the dead wood burning,
      Or behold the flowing years from the Sea returning?

      "I did begin a story placed about 100 years after the Downfall, but it proved both sinister and depressing. Since we are dealing with Men, it is inevitable that we should be concerned with the most regrettable feature of their nature: their quick satiety with good. So that the people of Gondor in times of peace, justice and prosperity, would become discontented and restless - while the dynasts descended from Aragorn would become just kings and governors - like Denethor or worse. I found that even so early there was an outcrop of revolutionary plots, about a centre of secret Satanistic religion; while Gondorian boys were playing at being Orcs and going around doing damage. I could have written a 'thriller' about the plot and its discovery and overthrow - but it would have been just that. Not worth doing."
