    So glad you did this video and dispelled a lot of myths!! I also have a 2002 S-Type 3.0 (and a 2000 XKR) with over 170,000 original miles and still running strong. The drivetrain and braking system is essentially Lincoln LS/Ford Thunderbird (Ford is even prominently stamped on the inside of the airbox and most of the electrical parts, the key is even Ford Taurus). In 18yrs, I refreshed the front suspension 2yrs ago (barely 1000 bucks including labor), replaced the fuel pump 3yrs ago (50 bucks from Trak Auto), heater control valve, a very common issue on Lincoln LS's (50.00 bucks) very easy to replace. Pretty much these are parts that are just aging-out, not failing. The original battery which was a Ford battery lasted 10yrs!! Bottom line is Jags from the Ford era are great cars, low maintenance, classically styled (I get compliments on the car almost every day) and fun to drive. And if OM/OEM parts are purchased from FCP Euro the replacement parts are free FOREVER!

      Probably the battery. Traction control on Jaguars gets really funny about that. You can have a battery which starts the car fine, but if it's too small or worn out then it'll throw traction control faults at you when you start the car. Probably because the voltage drops too much on cranking, making the computer go cranky. You must make sure the battery CCA is at least what the original one was. So many people stick smaller ones in and wonder why the computers go haywire.
      Seeing as this car sat around for so much of the time, I bet that battery is not up to snuff.

I did have to rebuild the transmission but that is kind of standard in the cars as they age. But other than that I haven't had to do anything to it besides maintenance. Never leaves me stranded. And I do appreciate the traction control and the comfort of driving it around and it's pretty stylish. It doesn't like to sit and idle it likes to drive and it likes to be driven hard a little. I'm not talking about driving it hard all the time course that would wear it out but if you don't really routed through its rev range and it doesn't actually put oil everywhere that needs to

I guess I would research what kind of oil to put in there and how to take care of it there are a bunch of forms so I would look out for that on the forums. I had an ‘05 S Type R. It was a great looking car. You can find great deals on them. The depreciation is no joke though, and when major repairs come, they can often accumulatively exceed the value of the car. These are great to have if you know how to work on them. Parts are not as expensive as other performance cars, but labor costs are insane. I love the car, but at the end, it was not worth it.

    • @carlosi.alvarez4989
      @carlosi.alvarez4989 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @Alexander Politi The car would not stay locked, it had to do with the electrical system. Then it was transmission. It wouldn’t shift into the next gear, and the car would go into limp mode. AC compressor went bad, way earlier than most cars. Constant oil and transmission fluid leaks, one thing after the other. I drive a ‘10 Lexus now, and none of these issue have ever appeared, and the car is now 13 years old.

    I put an oil pan gasket in one of these a while back. Had to drop the subframe, undo the steer rack, engine mount/s. Can’t quite remember but I know it was oddly shaped, almost like an anvil so it wouldn’t drop straight down without taking the whole car apart. I believe I even had to raise the engine a few inches so the oil pan would clear something else, then slid it out at an angle.

      It is but it was available in 4WD, most engines had slightly more power, had a differently tuned suspension and didn't come with the ability to turn the traction control off. The Mondeo was actually better because it wasn't as complicated, wasn't as heavy and had much sharper handling. Scotty always mentions it was based on the Ford Contour but that was actually the previous iteration of the Mondeo which was a bit of a dog. The X-Type was based on the 2001-2007 Mondeo while the Contour was based on the 1993-2000 Mondeo. The only major thing those two generations had in common was the bottom construction plate of the car. Even the suspension fitted to that same bottom plate was completely different. The old bottom plate did pull down the crash safety though as the Mondeo only scored 4 stars EURO NCAP while the Renault Laguna already had 5 stars EURO NCAP during that same era.

      @@CheapBastard1988 I've got a Mk3 Mondeo. My dad has the X type, so I've driven both a lot back to back, and worked on both. You're pretty correct in that they don't share much other than a front subframe. Though the Mk3 Mondeo and X type subframe is completely different to the Mk1/2/Contour one. So really the X type shares nothing at all with the Contour apart from maybe a handful of bolt on parts.
      I wouldn't say the Mondeo is better to drive, just different. It's more eager in corners for sure, and is very tail happy for a FWD car, but it has a different character. The X type is a much nicer motorway cruiser, even though the suspension is firmer. It feels a lot more stable and planted.
      Mondeo is wayyy more practical as well as being easier to work on, but that goes without saying really. Not that it matters, the X type has needed no major work ever, just consumables and the odd £10 bush that took all of half an hour to do. It's been the most reliable car I've ever known.

    These really are much better cars than most people realize. I recently had the chance to check out one that hadn't been abused, and it really surprised me. Yes, it had been owned by an elderly couple that didn't drive it too much and had always garaged it, but how many 18 year old cars with 80k miles on them have you seen where EVERYTHING still works? The paint was still fine, the interior was fine, all the electronics worked, etc. And it is a very nice handling, comfortable car with perfectly adequate power. If you can find one of these that hasn't been ragged out, grab it. They are depreciated to the point they cost almost nothing, and they kind of hit a sweet spot where they are new enough to have a modern, reliable engine, but aren't yet burdened with all the wildly complex technology of newer luxury cars.

      @@j_freed Nine times out of ten your friend is just getting ripped-off by a shady or inept mechanic. This particular Jag is from the Jag/Ford era, it's all Ford. I have this same model (170k miles) and the only two electrical issues that can wreak havoc is having an incorrect battery fitted which can easily be rectified. The other is a minor factory fitment issue involving the location of the wiring harness in the trunk. They attached it to the trunk hinge causing the wires (8-10 of them) to flex/bend every time the trunk opens and closes eventually causing the wires to break or short and is not visible. This particular harness controls the fuel pump, alarm system etc. a lot of havoc. My service tech sliced open the harness and wiring, spliced-in some connectors and moved the harness off the hinge. Less than a hundred bucks and it will never happen again. Easily an unscrupulous tech or even dealer could take you to the cleaners by telling you its a serious complex issue when it was very simple.
