Crap to Cream, nightmare MGB dash removal, not the job I expected it to be, recip saw involved.

  • Not to busy Sunday afternoon thought I would just whizz up to the shed and take my MG dash out prepping for the wiring loom replacement WRONG.
The last two dashboards I have removed were easy in comparison to this one. Had to remove half the gauges, vents and the glovebox (which didn’t have a key). The previous owner at some point decided to fit an alarm system, the wiring went everywhere and lots of electrical "stuff" either didn't work or didn't work like it was so I decided to replace the wiring loom.
A reciprocating saw was not on the list of tools I expected to use.

Bloody hell Marty!!!. The tension was palpable....!!!
Most would have removed the offending 'article', and then edited the process...
    You went all out,😂😂.
Was on the edge of my seat, hoping the recip saw didn't recoil and damage the dashboard😬

You are not alone, it was only during the replay that I recognised what could have gone wrong, I had just got the point that I had had enough……😂😂

Well done Marty. I had visions of your saw slipping badly into the the edge of the instrument hole when the bolt gave way & wrecking the fibreglass dash, which as we have discussed, i have never seen before! (I presume a PO produced / obtained a mirror image mould of a LH dash to make it). The replacement instrument loom , i guess will be pretty unique given the lay out of the instrumentation.

Hi Charles, when I replayed the video I also realised there was a certain amount of luck involved here. I was getting close to my wits end.
Wiring, as you have alluded to, I doubt this will be straight forward. It’s gotta be better than it was …… surely. A least the oil pressure gauge will work 😂😂😂

Good job. I held my breath the whole time worried you were going to slip and cut a big gash out of the dash. Why didn't you place a sacrificial piece of metal in the hole or ground out the saw teeth where not needed? I had done the same to about half the bolts in my dash last year, except I had already remove the windscreen and vinyl cover, and then I was able to cut the bolts from above. I don't know how I'm going to fix them yet.
Marty you are an inspiration. My 72 MGB is a rusted out hulk like the one you restored. I don't think I would of attempted restoring it if I did not come across your "Crap To Cream, MGB Resto" videos. It should be ready to pick up from the sandblaster any day now, then I see how much work it will take.

Don’t worry I was there to, I think if I had slipped I wouldn’t have posted the video and would have gone and cried quietly in a corner somewhere 😂😂😂

Thank you very much for the comment, muchly appreciated. Going to be an interesting journey putting the dashboard back together with the dash I took out and the new R/H drive wiring loom. I was trying to source an original dash to put in, however the scuttle panel has been shaped to take the dash that came out, so my options are very limited.

@@CrapToCream You could always go back to be a left-hand drive. This would make you stand out among a sea a right-hand cars at a car show.

Ha, for a fleeting moment I considered that, however trying to get all the parts to go back to a L/H drive would be a challenge to say the least. Also the MG is registered as a R/H drive, as you would see by previous videos getting over the pits is challenging, additionally I’m putting a supercharger on the engine which would another level of challenge into the project. Thanks for the suggestion anyway 👍👍. Cheers Marty

😂how many of us have wondered how much pleasure they are getting after hours on on fastener? Trying to riggle my exhaust on for the first time nearly resulted in the garage getting burnt down just so i had an excuse not to do it!

😂😂😂 Oh how right you are, bit drastic re the garage, haven’t quite got to that point yet, however if I had wrecked the dash that would have been my next option. 😂

I did a job similar to that - i ended up installing rivnuts and then usingthreaded 1/4 rod with a welded flange as long fasteners that stuck down making them easy to get to.... not sure if this would work on this application to reinstall but worth considering.

Good idea Steve, I did have a thought about rivnuts, however I was just glad to get the dash out, haven’t had a look at the practicalities of doing this yet. Great idea though, thanks. Cheers Marty
