    Always a good idea (as you mention) to leave the steering wheel nut on a few threads. That way if you are pulling hard on the wheel, the nut will stop you getting hit in the face if it should come up suddenly.
    It’s also possible to remove and replace the drivers side glovebox surround and then the liner with the steering wheel in place.

      You can just about get the driver’s side glove box out with the wheel in place, but it’s significantly easier if you remove it.
