Just in case anyone's wondering - it's the solo to Winter Madness by Wintersun, originally written and recorded by Jari Mäenpää. Teemu took over lead guitar duties live when Jari decided to focus more on vocals. And as you can tell he did a pretty sick job, to say the least.
As a Finn myself, a dream would be to see Teemu and Brandon Ellis shred together like Alexi and Roope did back in the day....like Marty and Jason Becker did back in the day...guitar gods.😛 We miss seeing guitar duos that shred well together.

Teemu is legit my favorite guitarist. I took lessons from him for about a year or so and it was worth every penny. He is as awesome a person as he is a guitarist too!
His playing is so clean, fluid, and effortless. I had never heard of Teemu until he began to tour with Megadeth, but I've quickly learned that he's an absolute guitar master. 🤘🏽🤘🏽
For sure dude. There are Vids out there where Teemu is kind of explaining his playing style/practice routine etc. And basically he says that the most important thing is to absolutely master the fundamentals. Like completely perfecting his picking technique, super basic hand coordination, stuff like that. Which really isn't super surprising or anything, but for me personally, as someone who recently took up learning guitar, it's pretty encouraging to hear such advice coming from an absolute master like Teemu.

I can honestly imagine Jari being a fairly shitty teacher. Just because he's such a virtuoso. I mean for Jari, there's really no skill limitation. If he can envision it in his head, he's gonna be able to play it, no matter how tough it is. Where most guitarists might have to contend with issues such as improving their sweep picking abilities, or improving their hand coordination for super fast alternate picking, Jari doesn't really have those same barriers. Not that he never warms up or maintains his fundamentals, but he's just such a virtuoso that all these skills are basically natural and intuitive for him. I mean, imagine trying to explain to someone how to walk, even if that person knows how already. "You just put one foot in front of the other", but that's really no better than saying "you just...do it. You just walk". There's probably a better example than that, but I think it gets the point across. I can totally see Jari trying to explain to Teemu how to play, idk, the "Eternal Darkness" solo, and Jari being like: "OK to play this sweep section is easy, all you have to do is this...*starts sweeping at full speed* " 😂😂
Holy F_ck, I had only heard of his name in passing as part of Wintersun, who I've never had the chance to listen to much either, just that they were quite talented... but *that* is a colossal understatement! This is some of the most fluid and effortless playing of very complicated runs, arpeggios and thrash riffs I've ever seen, he's _so smooth_ it's mindblowing, "talented" does not begin to describe it. Truly worthy replacement for Kiko too.
@@bradmettler4566 It appears to me that Teemu is trying to play the solo note for note the same way it has been performed by Marty previously. That leaves very little for interpretation. I'm sure he could some up with a custom solo if Dave requested him to do so.
@@bradmettler4566 i dont get the whole "soul" argument anymore. it has totally lost its meaning. like back in the day it used to be understandable because of ppl only shredding and not making any meaningful melodies in their soloing and other guitar playing. but nowadays ive seen so many ppl get it that are BOTH amazing shredders and improvisationists. i just feel like its coming from ppl who are just jealous that they wont ever be able to play as good as them.
I happened upon Troy's video a couple of year's ago and I was devastated by Yari's solo and Teemu's ability. He is a very special player, I am completely fascinated each time I see clips of him playing. I am also proud to say that my own transcription of this solo is identical to yours, Levi :D Just 3-4 very minor differences in note values. At 210 bpm, these often become imperceptible. I doubt I would have been able to do that, were it not for Teemu's ungodly precision and clarity and Troy's video. Still, I rarely transcribe and do it with a rather old version of Powertab, so a win is a win and I'll take it. :D
That last lick, the two arpeggios played in groups of 4 Have been keeping me on my toes for 20 hours. Love the sound of them, very difficult for me to play though
@@elderkirkus Practicing a single lick for this many hours a day isn't very efficient, because muscle memory is mainly consolidated during REM sleep. (I often throw in a practice session for stuff I can't play at the desired speed yet right before going to bed. It works wonders.)

These guys are totally unknown to mainstream american metal, I always try to bring up the fact that european power metal should be as recognized as british heavy metal or american thrash metal.

The thing is that power metal isn't as influential, british heavy metal and thrash metal paved the way for a lot of other genres while power metal sort of just ended there. NWOBHM also played a part in thrash and thrash was one of the stepping stones to extreme subgenres like black metal and death metal

Drums is done by Kai Hahto). Later on Jari wanted to focus more on just singing on gigs, so Teemu took lead guitar role in Wintersun and they hired a new rhytm guitarist. Wintersun is best what t I have ever heard in my life💯🤘👌 and I guess it is quite hard to exceed that, for me anyway.
This was a fun surprise. Remember watching this guy's projects somewhere around 2005-2008 or so, people thought the band would never get going and just be his desk drawer project. But eventually he did get some great people to play his music with him. Or I suppose it was Jari Mäenpää's project and he joined Mäenpää, and I listened to Mäntysaari on Imperanon before 2005 or so, it's getting a bit fuzzy these days. He was pretty quiet until apparently now Kiko couldn't join and recommended him. Not your ordinary Megadeth guitarist by any means to me - someone who grew up playing that typical Children of Bodom inspired Finnish power metal derives.
To follow Kiko and Marty before him is a giant task. Then to have Dave Mustaine looking over your shoulder is a mountain of pressure! This guy is awesome!
Teemu is great. I was lucky enough to have a guitar lesson with him before a Wintersun show in 2018. Hopefully this is just a temporary thing and Dave doesn't nick yet another guitarist from a band I like.
The thing is Wintersun hasn’t done anything since the 7000 tons of metal cruise. Jari’s gotten super lazy with Time 2 and Teemu doesn’t get included in the writing process so hopefully this tour will help elevate his career to where he deserves to be, be it in Megadeth or another band

They can play to a metronome but they can’t swing and they can’t groove and they lack the vibe that is fundamental in rock - Hendrix and Eddie and Steve and Dime all have a “hyper loose” vibe that we are all familiar with. We don’t listen to piano or violin for a reason.

@@Xplora213 AKA when they focus on lead playing/composition they're "On the spectrum"....I feel that way too, not enough "feel" I know r/guitarcirclejerk would love it but "feel" is a real thing and not just masturbating on the same unison 17b19 over and over and over I like Syu from Galneryus as a lead player for this reason, he has his impressive solo skills but has a bit of "dirt"/sloppiness in the playing but he's lightning fast But it's a happy medium, no one likes a pure Impelliteri/MAB player (not no one, but they're too "robotic" usually)....but guitar purists dislike the early guys like Page and Jimi, Petrucci is fine imo though...he has tons of examples of "playing with feeling" Eddie really is the perfect middle ground in a mainstream context

@@pauln6803YES. This is why early Petrucci and most shredders since 2000 have sucked as artists. They can play to a metronome but they can’t swing and they can’t groove and they lack the vibe that is fundamental in rock - Hendrix and Eddie and Steve and Dime all have a “hyper loose” vibe that we are all familiar with. We don’t listen to piano or violin for a reason.

@@Xplora213 AKA when they focus on lead playing/composition they're "On the spectrum"....I feel that way too, not enough "feel" I know r/guitarcirclejerk would love it but "feel" is a real thing and not just masturbating on the same unison 17b19 over and over and over
I like Syu from Galneryus as a lead player for this reason, he has his impressive solo skills but has a bit of "dirt"/sloppiness in the playing but he's lightning fast
But it's a happy medium, no one likes a pure Impelliteri/MAB player (not no one, but they're too "robotic" usually)....but guitar purists dislike the early guys like Page and Jimi, Petrucci is fine imo though...he has tons of examples of "playing with feeling"
Eddie really is the perfect middle ground in a mainstream context
