I was lucky to see him play live, he was already very sick and playing hurt him tremendously, and yet he did a gig in London early 2000s - jawdroppingly incredible.

Totally agree, in fact it's almost even more impressive, as you can tell he's playing pretty loud too, and not at safe compressed 'home' (Instagram clip) volume. There's also a passion, fire and aggressive beauty in the delivery that only comes from being able to do this stuff Live and Loud.
Even most of today’s technical players can’t pick like Paul, that’s the thing
Nothings changed, people just don't practice as much and sit on the internet instead.
You might borrow a kids VHS tape here and there, or write down the appregios and scales on paper.
@@BeamRider100 You think people are practicing less today? There are 12 year olds out there easily playing stuff that would have been considered pro level in the 80's and 90's. If anything, guitarists are practicing way more and there are a lot more really good players out there. Most people are never going to be able to pick as well as this guy regardless of how much they practice.
Back in the late ‘80’s I was fortunate enough to be in a band that opened for Racer-X in Arizona and got to see Gilbert perform in his heyday. Power drill and everything. Blew my mind.

I used to watching this intro along with the Yngwie REH video every day when I was at Berklee, I think my neighbors loved it b/c id hear them banging on the walls with excitement. PG Rocks!!!

Paul's got talent. But mostly what this solo is... is just out practicing the competition. As a composition it isn't impressive, it's pure technique, which is not a talent

Still one of the most jaw dropping intros ever in a tutorial tape…no delay, or reverb, no backing tracks…just pure unadulterated and CLEAN playing!
Also the first guitar tape I owned, and still a favourite player and teacher. Paul knew that his students would watch it over and over again so he’s always included humour in his tapes
I must have played this tape to death back in the day…even my mum knew half the dialogue (along with Michael Angelo Batio’s Star Licks VHS!)
And the magic tricks in the style of Tommy Cooper (or Carl Ballantine, for Americans) still make me smile

That's the most impressive part. Most players struggle just to sound ok on good amps. He had a horrible tone here. There's no room to hide imperfections and of course there aren't any because it's Paul Gilbert.

@@woolgum clean as in technique…although also quite clean in that there’s no reverb or delay on the guitar which can help the illusion of speed

I've lost count of how many videos I've seen of Paul Gilbert playing, and every single time I'm still amazed by his right hand technique, simply out of this world.
💯 I think most guitarists talk about his left hand and how long his little finger is etc, but I watch that picking technique and am just blown away
@@bendalgliesh5458 Yes! His alternate picking is crazy good, there's no strain or anything when he's playing, no stiffness, nothing, just some really relaxed and optimized right hand movement!

It makes you sick how unbelievably good his playing is
The best part about this is that Paul himself shows you most licks here in the video. I do wonder how many people could actually play the entire thing as well as he does. I can do most of the licks by themselves cleanly but it's another level to combine everything so smoothly like that.
Spot on and well said about combining them, individually yep ok, still not easy, but then just cleanly transitioning is another thing entirely

@The Fourth Write Djentleman Yeah, dude. That's the other thing. I can shred, but if it has been a couple of days since the last time I played, I have to warm up a little and get my hands synchronized. To be able to just jump in and shred like that, you have to be in that zone where you know you've been practicing a lot and the everything is in synch immediately.
There is three people that can almost play mimic him perfectly. Anton oparin, remy henson, and adam wever
Most likely not that many. Sure you can learn how to play it note by note, but coming close playing as clean as he does with dexterity and attack, well, that's another story. I recently recorded it as I wanted to play it 20 years ago almost, but never invested much time into it and i know i'd have to practice much more to get it as clean as he does on some parts. But I am okay with that.
To be that young and have that much talent just blows me away! I remember when this came out. So glad that he was able to go so far in his career!

As a pure guitar player, Paul Gilbert is probably top 5 in the world. He has been this good since the 1980s, simply amazing.
Paul Gilbert is the greatest guitarist I have ever seen live. Outstanding
I remember seeing Mr Big in the early 90s in Milan, when they opened for Aerosmith (Get a grip tour). I had heard of them but didn't know any of their songs. In my opinion, they blew Aerosmith off the stage. Gilbert and Sheehan in particular simply floored me that night and "ruined" my Aerosmith experience.
Love all the fast bluesy arpeggios and passages too, really stands out. Unbelievable player 🤘🏼

I've seen Paul Gilbert live several times with Mr Big and as a solo artist. He makes me want to practice more and also makes me want to chop my guitars up for firewood 😆 He is incredible

I can't help but be in awe of the picking hand it's like a machine almost like a type writer with a mind of its own... His technique is is so refined. His fretting hand also moves around effortlessly and can't help but notice how relaxed he is. Mind blowing stuff🤯
He was like a machine, amazing. There's footage of him at GIT just chilling with the students, like a Marvel superhero; it's not smoke and mirrors, when he was on it was like a lightning strike.
one of my fave guitarists, had the pleasure of seeing him up close and personal at a guitar clinic in florida, saw slash there too. paul was great, a small gathering, talked with people, etc. pretty cool.

What I love about Paul is that he went from a high-speed shredder who thew in feel bends once in a while, to a feel bender who threw in high-speed shred once in a while. :)

Full credit to you Levi this is a masterpiece of transcribing and will mean so much to many of us 'Hot Licks' generation players. This intro and the Eric Johnson Total Electric Guitar intro etc, have such art, skill, depth and significance to make them hugely important guitar moments in their own right.
Still one of my favourite solos by anyone, anywhere, ever. A close second for me from these REH videos is the intro solo that Vinnie Moore does on his video, well worth checking out.

I remember years ago when this came out, yes chaps it was back when the dead see was alive, I thought, F me, do we get the tab for this and what a shite fight it was going to be to learn, we never got the tabs, and I always hated not getting the tab for their great noodles at the start, but along comes Levi and saves the day. I borrowed this video from the local library and never gave it back! 😂 phenomenal playing and super clean. Other videos around or this time were soaked in effects and didn’t really teach aswell. Lovely Ibanez too! The clear or no scratch plate is a great idea.

Seen this 12 years ago and despite the rise of so many "TH-cam" shredders and technical players, this REH intro clip by Paul is still unmatched to this day by it's sheer "shredtasticness", it has everything: the passion, the fire, the string skipping insanity, and just distortion straight to the amp rawness.🤘 Props to Levi for transcribing this gem, thanks for sharing your amazing "tabbing" talent mate.💯

I am a big fan of yours Levi. I was a "shredder" in the late 80s, but grew up hearing Bluegrass, Country, etc.; which led me to learn Bebop (as much as I can). You have been a huge help on my recent journey because you love all music like me, but you are great.

I have seen several people attempting to tab this over this years, on the old site Shredpit where I first heard about Paul and later in PowerTab and Guitar Pro 3 (quite a while back circa 2001) and I've seen newer ones since. I've owned the DVD for several years and now FINALLY someone seems to have nailed a transcription. HOORAY! Levi Clay rules.

Paul Gilbert is one of the best guitarists to ever live. But it goes without saying that just because you're the world's best guitar player, doesn't mean you can write a hit song.

Total watershed moment. Hearing all of those early shredders......completely dumbfounded as how to do it. I saw Yngwie live in 84 and was shocked. Hearing Gilbert blew my mind. He was more impressive than Yngwie. Now I had been playing out as a teen and understood that you could get away with slop when being heard live vs a board tape. I watched the same set of myself with a live video vs the board tape. Even with recording I knew there is some leeway because I had a 4 track recorder. With these guys i wondered how good they actually were. Eary aYngwie and Gilbert were 100 the real deal. When I finally got to see this video after it had come out I was astounded! Even better, I was relieved that I could understand what was going on. He completely lifted the veil of secracy off of advanced guitar playing
