It's widely accepted that we need to find more efficient and sustainable ways of transporting people and goods from A to B and many companies are beginning to emerge with solutions.
One of which is EAV (Electric Assisted Vehicles) and their fit for purpose delivery vehicle designed to bridge the gap between e-cargo bikes and vans. As combustion vehicles are pushed out the of the cities, could this innovative and sustainable e-cargo bike be the future for last-mile deliveries?

This is awesome...I could see this being a solution for palliative care nurses that have to visit patients all over the city...as just one of literally hundreds of applications. As an aside....I cannot believe the number of Ads that popped up through this episode...at least 3 times as many as any TH-cam video I have watched to date. If Fully Charged ends up moving to a different platform please keep us informed...TH-cam is going to drive many of us away if they keep this up.

I was very resistant to addblockers for a long time believing that adds helped support creators, but it got to the stage where I just said enough is enough. I think Adam hit the nail on the head towards the end of the video. We have a large group of people who are afraid of change. I run into it all the time when I talk about EV's or renewable energy. Their immediate reaction is to look for the negatives and for reasons why new ideas won't work. I'm happy to say I'm in the other camp who think ideas like this are great and whilst on its own won't change the world, aggregated together with lots of other new more sustainable approaches will make a real difference to the world. So good luck to them.

Absolutely. People don't see how brilliant the future will be (and it is rapidly arriving with electric vehicles). These bikes are fantastic, I would love a passenger version for local (or even longer) trips. I think a three seater would be feasible.

There's two other aspects that I see:
      - people that simply don't care, but don't want to have to do any change which does sometimes take effort.
      - people that don't have the imagination to see anything past what we already have.

You didn't see it from their business point of view. Any business goal is to make a profit and make more money. I blame people (who are pushing this technology) for failing to convince here on how adapting to this new technology able to save cost and make more profit to them, or the technology itself still unable to fulfil that role completely. Until then, no one wants to embrace the change.

Also, look at that smile on the Ocado cyclist's face! Of all the jobs out there, this can't be a bad one: getting fit out and about (with some electro-assistance), delivering goods safely to customers in need during a pandemic, while staying reasonably dry during the journey. Win, win.

We need legislation change so this type of cargo vehicle can have more power whilst still having the same speed limit for assistance (15mph), this would dramatically increase the usability of these types of machines.

I really like this design and concept - especially their taxi version which can take two passengers, has flip down seats and a ramp for wheelchair users or cargo which would suit our family for school runs, local commutes and shopping. It could even work to transport my work equipment when doing jobs within London (I’m based in a suburb within the M25.
However I do have some reservations, the 15mph assist limit being one of them. I don’t have any experience as an ebiker so my reservations may be misplaced but with local roads lacking cycle lanes and this taking up more road where passing space is often limited I would want to be able to keep up with traffic rather than having it stuck impatiently behind me. To my mind this would mean being able to go at least 25 mph - many local roads are 20, some 30, some 40mph, but at least on 20 mph roads I could keep up and most traffic seems to go at around 25 on the 20mph roads. I would be very interested in your opinion on this Steven, since you actually have ebike experience on the roads.
Finally my other concern is price and affordability. There is no way this could replace a car or van for my work when I have to travel hundreds of miles outside of London so it would be a second vehicle for us. Having been quoted £14,000 for the basic EAV Go I was very shocked by the price. For mass adoption this needs to be affordable and you can buy cheap Chinese electric vehicles for less. Given it’s essentially an ebike (which can be had for around £1000+) with a frame around it I was expecting something in the region of £4000-£5000 tops and that would seem a reasonable expenditure but 3x that? And no doubt the taxi version will be significantly more. Looking at more common ecargobikes it seems my expectation of cost was about on the money for them and this has better enclosure and more wheels but still? Perhaps it makes sense if you are pricing downwards from an electric van but still....

In some parts of the US we could easily get two full crops per year. "50% of the costs are in the final mile of delivery".
We need to be really careful about what is being said here. There are a different costs involved with deliveries - environmental and economic (fuel, maintenance, labour) - and vehicles like this will only reduce some of them. And being smaller vehicles, may even increase others.
Whatever we are talking about, the costs are loaded towards the final mile. It takes fewer vehicles and drivers to move large lorries between depots. Having multiple smaller vehicles out doing the final mile (in order to get everything delivered in one day), spending a lot of time idling, pushes the environmental cost to the final mile. Having more vehicles and drivers push the economic costs to the final mile. And that's where we need to be careful - if you would need two or three of these to replace each traditional delivery van, and therefore need 2 or 3 times the staff, financially that's going to increase the costs.
Companies can have a desire to improve environmentally, but they still need to be price competitive. I suspect most couriers are still going to be better served by direct size-comparable electric replacements for their vans. But this type of vehicle will definitely have a place in cities where space and congestion is an issue (being able to bypass traffic using cycle lanes would be a big win), and for companies that specialise in connecting local businesses with their communities.

Remember, the guy in the video specifically called out that "half the costs are in the final mile" - running a larger fleet of smaller vehicles will not be cheaper. But there will be use cases where a smaller vehicle makes sense.

I agree, my idea is that moving goods around is moving a lot of person too. With delivery, is somewhat optimized because you do not move anymore 100 kilos of person for few kilos of goods. But still, is a waste because is manual labor and a worker will cannot deliver too many parcels in a day. The solution is automated delivery. But not one on roads, because will contribute to traffic, and is too complex vehicles. Just suspended ways. Or by pipe. So we deliver water by pipe, and the system pays itself from delivering a cheap item. These suspended paths may be more complex, but the moved goods are more expensive and can return the investment faster.
Suspended paths may be complicated and not so esthetic. The alternative cam be underground. We need anyway underground infrastructure through to mount what today we bury, like pipes and cables, and we dig them again and again. Yes, this is an big investment, but then we never dig the pavement again, no more sinkholes from undiscovered broken pipes, and a lot of traffic reduced. So at bottom is collector for occasional water, and access, and on walls the cables pipes and rails for delivery modules. Sure the automatic routing require some technology, but not as complex as for traffic.

A simple spray coat. Also used on cars. Lower speeds and thus shorter distances. People with glasses use bikes in the rain. They really do.

For everyone who got here for microcars, I suggest the video "The Miniature Microcars of Amsterdam" by "Not Just Bikes", and also the other videos that channel has about making cities walkable, welcoming to pedestrians, and solvent at the same time, rather than the current car-dependent insolvent cities of the USA adn Canada.

I think it would work nicely as a recumbent eav. The rider compartment doesn’t look rain proof in the slightest, unless you have direct on or behind winds.
It also looks like it’s going to tip over.
Just my take as a rider of many years.

Ban private cars. We’ve wasted so much time not building bike infrastructure that we’re now too late in the climate crisis to wait a decade or more for a full bike network to be built up.

    • @chriswatt9692
      @chriswatt9692 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

That will be the problem... Much of the cycle network is inaccessible to non standard cycles. Although some judicious route planing can help to avoid the barriers many anti moped barriers are barriers to wide vehicles like tricycles, including wheelchair handcycles (balance and walking issues) a hinderance to long cycles like tandems (blind stoker) or both like my tadpole recumbent (lower spine nerve damage).

I think the government needs to help with the classification of this type of 'vehicle'. At the moment they have to be 250 watt and 15 MPH which maybe okay on a very flat and local route. If they go beyond that it is Individual Vehicle Approval, registration plates, and driver licensing. I can't see a problem in allowing more power assist with a 20/25 MPH cut off to help them get up hills and around longer routes. The 15 MPH limit is on assistance anyway so a fit rider going down hill will be going faster anyway, good intentions unintended consequences making them less of a practical alternative.
