He has been called ‘the most influential columnist in America’, and is read by everyone from small-business owners to President Obama. As a star columnist of The New York Times, Thomas Friedman has won the Pulitzer Prize three times. Although he has been dubbed ‘the high priest of globalisation’, Friedman is well aware that it is the tensions created by globalisation which have paved the way for the election of Donald Trump. Nevertheless, when he comes to the Intelligence Squared stage, Friedman will argue that contrary to Trump’s promises of walls and tariffs, it is openness to trade and ideas that will allow us all to thrive amid the rapid, startling changes sweeping through the world.
Given the dizzying whirlwind of technological change which has wiped out jobs and transformed workplaces, it is no wonder that electorates have reached for Trump’s protectionist solutions in the US and nativist retrenchment in the UK. But, as Friedman will argue, the forces of globalisation needn’t spell disaster. Instead, it is how we respond to these accelerating changes that will determine whether we falter or flourish. Both the EU referendum and the US presidential election were contests not between left and right, but between what Friedman calls ‘Wall People’ - those who feel their identity threatened by globalisation - and ‘Web People’: those who instinctively embrace the current pace of change and are keen to collaborate in a world without walls.
In this major event, Friedman will offer his guide to updating our lives and institutions for the accelerating changes of the 21st century. For example:
    - We need to innovate not just technologically, but politically: moral leadership in a complex world is becoming ever more essential
    - Political leaders should be accelerating local start-ups in both the economic sector and the social sector, to build resilient and prospering citizens
    - The ideal skill set for the jobs of the future is ‘stempathy’: science, technology, maths - and empathy
Join us on January 24th, and hear how the new asset class is not information but ‘human capital talent’, and how we can all thrive in the age of acceleration.

This youtube video has no CC option; so, cannot find speech text in the Open Transcripts panel to find the right timing Friedman says something.
However, do anyone knows by chance where is the part he says something quite important like: 'they tried to save the Jobs, but actually what we currently need is to save the Workers'? Tx.

Not only is God seemingly absent from cyberspace, God seems to be disappearing from more and more lives. I think this is related to loss of strong community: the one central element religious communities offer is the strength of community where caring for each other is central. As people abandon faith they also abandon community centered (when the community is healthy) around love and care for each other and honoring the do unto others you mention. How do we religious leaders strengthen the sense of community connected to reality rather than to strict religious doctrine? Perhaps it’s as Noah Harari mentions, using the stories of faith to connect to the lives of people where they live rather than in abstraction and doctrine.

Please Thomas Friedman you claim to accept and enjoy those that are different, but then chastise and politicize ! The Coming changes will be faster than we can adapt to no matter what a persons politics, Race or Religion ! Big business is pushing automation on all levels making many workers [ Humans ] obsolete as production is moved to robotics . The acceleration of the decline of a humanoid workforce Will cause enormous upheaval in the middle and lower classes. My advice Hold on to things loosely! live modestly!

18:40 her question why "suddenly" we are having these problems ... Please, these have been issues from the beginning of time. Humans divide ourselves and dislike others who are different. Even in her example of New york, there are Asian "bits" jewish "bits" irish "bits" ...each group segregated itself, although there was a lot of mixing by those who were curious, there are always people who isolated themselves in fear. Even today we have "white" neighborhoods, hispanic neighborhoods etc also not just with race but also with ideology, people are separated into liberal or conservative pockets, stuck in echo chambers....

Does "forward-looking" and "progressive" necessarily equate to "desirable" or to "inevitable" ? See a book called "NUDGE" by Cass R. Sunstein and Richard H. Thaler . People habitually face forward when they are moving toward a goal or a destination , but are they oriented by their own conscious choices or by a rhetorical equivocation that could be misleading ?

Intellectual progress has outpaced social progress and catching up can be difficult & painful. Some accept change while others resist change especially the ill informed & fanatics. We unwittingly find ourselves on the treadmill of technological progress, some are outpaced, some struggle to keep up while a small number push forward for a period of time till they are running to stand still or fall off. This scenario may provide short lived satisfaction but almost always ends in despair, isolation & anger. Those who can offer solutions to this endless problem often tell you they are the only solution & the gullible latch on grasping at straws. It is important to be assured that it is not your fault & scapegoat people different from yourself as the cause. This thinking is convenient, lazy and self destructive, but always works. We need to apply the proverbial brakes & reassess our situation and work for a solution inclusive of all & scapegoating of none. Let us give it a shot!

There is no insight whatsoever, not to mention the number of times he contradicts himself. Please, for those you support this guy because he sounds eloquent. Go back and have a listen with open ears. Think critically, and not about whether he's on your side of the fence or not.

As one neoliberal journalist to another, ''you are the best'', but Thomas Friedman supported and now justifies the war on Iraq, where he argued that an ''open society'' such as the US needed to ''take out a big stick'' to the Middle-East and ''going from house to house from Basra to Baghdad, and saying what part of this don't you understand.... suck on this'', presumably meaning on the shape end of the US military machine. In the light of an estimated over 1 million Iraqis killed, the war crimes committed and the many innocent Iraqis tortured, as well as thousands of US soldiers killed and many more injured, Friedman is at best a disgusting and deplorable human being and journalist and at worst some kind of neoliberal sociopath.
