Thomas Friedman and Ray Dalio Discuss the Changing World Order

  • From COVID-19 to the skyrocketing cost of living and the attempted coup on January 6, 2021, the United States is experiencing some of the greatest political, social, and economic disparities it has faced in more than 100 years. As the world at large also grapples with many of these challenges, the existing world order is in a precarious state, with new leaders emerging and long-entrenched great powers facing the possibility of decline.
Legendary investor Ray Dalio, in conversation with Thomas L. Friedman, discusses how turbulent economic and political periods such as our current moment are echoed in the past, and how to weather the changes these moments may produce in the future. Ray Dalio, a global macro investor for more than 50 years and founder of Bridgewater Associates, is the author of The Changing World Order: Why Nations Succeed or Fail. Thomas L. Friedman (moderator) is a three-time Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist whose foreign affairs column in the New York Times reports on US domestic politics and foreign policy, Middle East conflicts, international economics, the environment, biodiversity, and energy.

It is a government inspired crisis this time. The Treasury have to sell Bonds to cover the trade imbalance and the government spending imbalance. In order to sell them they have to raise interest rates and the old long-term, low risk, low interest, AAA investments (including Treasury Bonds), held by the banks (often due to government regulatory policy), become next to worthless. The next milestone is the 15th when the government issue a new batch of Bonds. I have approximately 350k stagnant in my portfolio that needs growth. What is the best way to take advantage of this downturn?

In the world of finance, recessions are prime opportunities for wealth creation. When my portfolio suffered a significant loss in April of last year, I realized the need to enlist the expertise of a financial consultant. With her guidance, I have not only recovered from my losses but also generated a profit of 250k. The knowledge and skills I have acquired through this experience have been invaluable in my journey towards financial success.

The essential thing that everyone should be thinking about right now is investing in non-government sources of income. Especially in light of the current global economic crisis. It is still a wonderful moment to invest in gold, silver, digital money, and stocks.

Thank you New York Historical Society for putting Ray Dalio on the stage with Thomas Friedman and then posting the video to TH-cam. It’s a great service to the public
I am surprised Thomas Friedman hadn’t already heard Ray Dalio‘s stories as I’ve been listening to them for a year now or maybe more.
Important information, instead of being controlled by the old media gatekeepers in print and TV, has now been unlocked and is available on TH-cam, and other venues, for everyone to learn from, but how many of us have yet heard Ray Dalio‘s wisdom? Too few.
Why hasn’t the NYT printed an expose on Ray Dalio and his ideas?

Thank you for the video, I found out that investing is not for everybody, you just need a strong stomach too see your portfolio go down. It might be wiser for a novice to start with copy trading investing, but it is not easy. To invest in growth stocks it is another level, definitely you need to know what are you doing.

From my own point of view, you need to invest smartly if you need the good things of life. so far i've made over $255k in raw profits from just 6 months into the market from my diversified portfolio strategy and i believe anyone can do it you have the right strategy, mutual funds takes long time but investing smartly is the key for short term. Most of us tend to pay more attention to the shiniest position in the market to the cost of proper diversification.

She is a popular broker you might have heard of. I can correctly say she's worth her salt as a financial advisor as her diversification skills are top notch, because i see that in her results as my portfolio grows by averages of 10 to 15% on a monthly basis, unlike i can say for my IRA which has just been trudging along, my portfolio just mirrors what she trades and not just on some particular industries of my choosing.

At this point the concept of bringing the middle together in America to sort things out is impossible, why, because the corruption in the US government is too high. Congressmen have learned that they can enrich themselves by taking a simple job as a civil servant, they prefer to work with the lobbyists that are filling their pockets than to work for the citizens who elected them. The education system in the US is ruined because of dirty lobbyists, in primary schools they say sex assignment is more important than mathematics or english? America's decline started in the 1970s and it cannot be stopped, the momentum is too great

Have you looked at the USA in comparison to other countries as it regards to the healthcare services and the health of their population. Currently we are ranking below several developing Third World countries. That is criminal on behalf of our governments. That is why President Biden reached out to develop a health Hunger and nutrition model to be used and enhanced collecting $8 billion in donors to move these initiatives forward. I was one of the participants in those meetings, and live in one of the states of the US, where there is effort to implement some of those practices, but it is a steep, steep, steep, uphill climb to provide nutrition biomedicine education to a post-pandemic, panicked population.

5:52: ⚠ The rise and decline of empires follow a typical cycle, with periods of conflict, peace, prosperity, and decline.
11:59: ✅ China's success is attributed to their reform, symbiotic relationship with the US, and Confucian way of thinking.
18:00: 💡 China's leadership style is hierarchical and focused on mutual respect, but it faces challenges in decision-making and controlling the country.
22:58: 🌍 There is fear and uncertainty in China due to world conflicts, which is causing Chinese companies to consider setting up businesses outside of the country.
28:53: 😳 AI is a powerful resource that can be used to improve mankind or for fighting, but the lack of regulations and the potential for weaponization is concerning.
34:37: ⚠ The economy is entering a tightening phase with potential consequences, including a worse economy and increased unemployment, which could impact elections. Additionally, there are concerns about wealth inequality, anti-China sentiment, and the possibility of conflict with China. Ray--the bit about worrying is brilliant. Problem is our collective worrying needs to be converted into political action (for the broad-based solutions you mentioned) rather than infighting in Washington. Right now the trend still seems to be toward increased polarization and an increased wealth gap. I personally attribute much of it to corruption and an antiquated incentive structure for politicians and the media. Our representatives and our media are either ignorant on basic economics and technology, or are intentionally misleading us. A mix of the two is likely, neither is acceptable, and all of it seems as though it is beginning to test the fortitude and stability of the global economy. So what is the billionaire class going to do about it?

It is true what you highlighted and unfortunately some things that Ray talks about are beyond the individual actions possible, even within political persons. There is evidence of lack of power and capability even within politicians to do the right thing when it seems so clear from the man/woman in the street. Ray’s book talks about the decline having started and if we look at the forces causing this decline, it is unfathomable how to prolong the decline, much less reverse it

@Pat Risberg , you got most of the problems correctly stated. In fact, some issues, or factors are more complex. Generally speaking, that's what happened when there is too much freedom, absolute freedom, unfetterred freedom, or unrestrained freedom. The freedom is abused and hijacked. It is weaponized to impose controls on others, thus some are more equal than others. In simple words, becomes authoritarian. So democracy can be an authoritarian system of govt in disguise.😢 That's why the politicians you voted for in a rigged elections or manipulated elections hold all the power in collaboration with the elites, oligarchs or filthy rich. They don't listen to voters. They control the voters! In reality, absolute freedom leads to absolute power and corruptions absolutely. Everything is like that. Too much of something is always injurious and dangerous - eating too much is very bad for your health.
China's democracy is a controlled democracy in accordance to Chinese culture. It works for their govt, their people and their cultures and customs.

Moreover, consider that a president is just a transient political figure and that it is the nonelected bureaucrats who pursue policy agendas. Like him or not like him, Donald Trump brought the existence of the "deep state" to many Americans. It is not an illusion. It is real. Every country has them. Once they have made a mess of things in a country (such as in the US) one realizes that they are like a tape worm whose continued existence has become dangerous to health of its host.

Your understanding of macro geopolitical frameworks, theirs causes, their effects and their cycles and how they play out is brilliant.

I've viewed a majority of interviews and they seem to repetitively start with the same introductory explanation. I believe a more effective approach would be to begin interviews under the assumption that everyone is familiar with the background information from all the books, and proceed directly to the questions.

  • @cemerson12
    @cemerson12 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

One place to break this cycle would be to block the growth of the wealth gap … ! … most easily done by taxing correctly … or … by spreading income without raising prices (which just leads to inflation). Eg of the latter would be by relating top incomes in a corporation to bottom incomes … and/or … by giving employees shares of stock on large enough quantities.
Otherwise history will repeat as Dalio suggests.

  • @spiritofgoldfish

The US is so heavily debt-laden, its housing prices are so high and its medical care is so extremely high (18% of GDP) cannot compete. It cannot re-industrialize without taking radical steps to write down debts, to de-privatize health care and education, to break up monopolies and restore progressive taxation. The vested Financial, Insurance and Real Estate (FIRE sector) interests are too powerful to permit these reforms.
That makes the U.S. economy a failed economy, and America a Failed State.

Ray is right on when he says: "If you don't worry, you have to worry. If you worry, then you don't have to worry." The problem is American Media controlled by the ruling class are still brain-washing people that we are the best and we don't have to worry. As Ray says, just look at our Education system, American basic infrastructure, health care, militarization of everything, and how we treat each other. An empire's rise or fall is not based on what you believe or wish, rather it is based on its overall health like a person's health.

As Mr. Dalio clearly explains, the United States is in terminal economic, political, technological and cultural decline while the Global South, led by China, is becoming ascendant. The American economic, moral and cultural decadence and rot is real and there are no political forces on the horizon seeking to reverse this decline. Unlike the US, China has strong, competent leadership from the top to the bottom that is capable of accomplishing great things.
The US is going to be supplanted by China whether you like it or not. The only questions are when and whether or not a destructive war will be required to accomplish the transition. The American Suez moment is rapidly approaching.

Interisting prespective. A caviot on his summation about the US as an empire. Empires are a state that politically, militarilly and economically dominate other states. They run the governments of the other states. They intergrate their economy with those states. The US never did either. Thus internal conflict in the US does not necessarily translate into economic collapse through other poaching on those ties. The US is going through one of its historically cyclical political brawls (we've been doing this since 1675). We'll see how that comes out.
