    Hey! Loved the video. I am an organic farmer from the south pacific islands. Is the caterpillar tunnel to prevent too much sun on the lettuces?

    • @FarmersFriend
      @FarmersFriend  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It partly helps with sun, but also helps to keep the beds from getting too wet with rain. When growing under cover the farmer can completely control the amount of water that gets into the soil so it's always ready to plant and harvest.

      Salanova. The easiest to grow, and LEAST FUN. I hate that my market demands more salanova type lettuces now, than they used to when I started 15 years ago. People used to love my full sized, wild, leaf lettuces of all kinds. Ones you had to space 8in apart. Now everyone wants little tiny tight heads, packed in clamshells. I hate it. But you won't make $ growing lettuce unless you grow salanova.

    Very good information. Some years I've had a poor garden when we start wet and cold replant and replant and then end wet and cold. It looks like a tremendous low cost boost. And you do seem to attract naysayers that's realy too bad they just get in the way of innovation.

    After watching a few of these episodes, my questions are:
    1). who invented the QUICK CUT HARVESTER ...because it sounds like a God send from all you lettuce farmers that are giving it high marks.
    2). do you guys experience a lot of back pain in your profession?
    Enjoyed your story.

    • @FarmersFriend
      @FarmersFriend  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Great questions.
      1) The Quick Cut Greens Harvester was invented by Jonathan Dysinger roughly 10 years ago when he was about 17 years old. Since then it has become the go-to tool for small-scale farmers growing significant amounts of salad greens.
      2) Back pain is greatly minimized by the fact that the tool harvests greens so quickly. Even though you're bending over to use the tool, you will only be in that position for a few minutes to harvest large amounts of greens. Multiple customers have shared that they are able to harvest greens 10x faster with the Quick Cut Greens Harvester than by hand. In just 10 minutes you can harvest up to 30lbs of greens with the Harvester, whereas that would take almost two hours to do by hand.
      Hope that helps!

    Great video.
    1. Is the first time year (absolutely no expierence) profitable if done on beginner scale? Also what would start-up cost be for 1/4 scale of farm in video.
    2. Can this be done in hot house type of structure?
    3. Can it be done in shipping (average) container?
    4. Focusing on erbs & lettuce (60% Erb 40% lett & other veg) can it be done by 2 older people or how much help is needed?
    Thank you for your response.

    • @FarmersFriend
      @FarmersFriend  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      These are some excellent questions that unfortunately go beyond the scope of what could be covered in a youtube comment. In short, farming isn't easy-get as much experience as you can by working on other farms to save yourself many costly mistakes. There is endless creativity regarding what types of structures can be used to grow successfully. You'll find examples of all the ones you mentioned and more on youtube. It is definitely possible to make a living with two full time people, but again, it takes a lot of work. Some knowledge or experience in both business and marketing is super helpful too. All the best!
