I'm not doubting that that engine can't easily make 700hp, the YB Cosworth blocks are known to be bullet proof. I'm just confused a little. Didn't group A rally have a HP cap of around 300HP to keep the cars from turning back into what Group B had become? Maybe I'm missing something but wouldn't a 700HP Cosworth that's prept to rally be even more dangerous than the Group B it replaced?
It started out life as a wrc car (as far as I know) but when Stian got the car he modified it and Jenspeed worked their magic with the engine for sure! I think the car was used on track but also in hill climb events.
@@SoloLap Done some digging into this particular Escort Cosworth and you're correct, it was built for group A but wasn't overly successful with only a few wins and podiums. It was then sold on to a Cosworth enthusiast that put a small fortune into turning it into a hill climb/time attack weapon. I've also checked out Stian for the first time, he was and still is a highly respected rally driver going back at least 3 decades, he was a force to be reckoned with in the early 80's up until the mid to late 90's.
@82coxy sounds right, Stian bought it straight from the rally iirc and the car was driven by Carlos Sainz. Strangely Stian came to visit me a few weeks ago and I got him to sign my Evo as he is also a legend in the Evo community!

@Jon.Rogers that's right! Stian's car went off track and down a hill into trees and Martin's car had a high speed crash on the gumball rally heading to Nandor iirc.

I have this very Gatebil DVD. Long story behind how i got it over here in the uk back in 2006. Its very much the all time ultimate escos build. Stunning. There is a tribute car in england and its frightening how similar it is. Its basically a rhd clone. Gorgeous.
I heard there was a replica build at some point 🙂 Sounds like me, buying the dvd somehow and watching it in Norweigan...not knowing I'd move over to Sweden and meet Stian years later!
Hello Mythical Mark 😃👍! Thanks for sharing this Legendary Ford Escort wrc. Extraordinary power of the engine, amazing sound of the turbo and perfect setup made by this driver. He has the total control of the car. He is excellent both in driving and drifting. This Escort is perfection. Have a nice evening Mythical Mark 😃👍
Ultimate escort, or car for that matter, I've ever been lucky enough to see live. There is a whole feature video about it (for funding the rebuild after it crashed) on TH-cam. In Norwegian tho, but thats fine for us locals 😊
I just searched him up and wow, another crazy Norweigan driver/engineer in a mad Ford! I never knew this existed, I wonder if Stian and Martin ever crossed paths?
yes it is LHD and yes he can drive! I'm in the process of translating the original Norweigan dvd where the footage came from, it explains a lot more about his history in motorsport (a lot of hillclimbs in Norway) and a lot more about the car, even with an interview of the guys at Jenspeed who built the engine.
Right as I was reading your question about if the car was left hand drive it was showing an interior view of the car that shows the steering wheel on the left at the 3min point in the video if you are interested in seeing it . 😊
@@SoloLap thats a shame. it was an awesome car as it ran at gatebil in blue. but to be honest with the history the car has, it should have been left as the repsol Saintz car and livery. Still awesome though!
Mental for sure but there’s Cossie Escort nicknamed “Black Beast” that was built and raced by Andreas Gabat, who’s also specialist for Cosworths. That car was downright nuts.

Oh yes, so many times I have watched this video, definitely the greatest Escort Cosworth... But the one that pushed me to buy modest 1.6 Escort was the Getaway in Stockholm 2 Escort Cosworth, that red beast (in my eyes back then...). Too bad I couldn't find any additional photo or video about that car. Of course, Stian's Escort was a step further in every sense.
@@SoloLap In Getaway in Stockholm 1 it was Porsche 911. I think they said in a video both Supra and Escort were around 450hp... Until this day I'm more excited to see Cosworth than some Ferraris 🙂
It got Painted silver when Leif Nilsen had it. He was the Gatebil organiser. They pushed even more horse power out of it. Then the car went away and not seen it in many many Years. It was a rumor that it was sitting in a barn. Not even sure if it is in Norway still
@lukejenkins9341 each to their own I guess? I only like the cossie in original rally trim and we can let Stian off as this car was a wrc car from the start 🤓
Martin's car was immense also, I remember that issue of Revs that pitted the escort and his mondeo against a modified R1...the stuff of legend.
