    99 Camry 250k miles - Performed disconnect test, both fans shown good. Replaced brown fan relay taken from junkyard, both fans spin --FIXED..! $0, 10 min, no swearing. I LOVE YOU..!

    Thank you for your video on over heating Toyota Camery (1997 -2001). My son in law and daughter were quoted $1400 to replace the radiator, fans, thermostat and hoses on 2000 camery only worth $1200. Using your video we were able to prove the fans were operational and narrow it down to the three fan relays which we replaced for $73. Overheating problem solved, and your video saved them from having to replace their auto. Thank you soooo much!!!!!!!!!!

  • @petset77
    @petset77 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    Great tips. I'd check the fuse first, then the relays. Unplugging the sensor connection could save buying a fan, which is what I was just going to do. (My ex wife in another state has a Camry, and the A/C fan comes on, but not the thermostat one, leading to the car getting hot when sitting in traffic. My son should be able to check that out, based on your video. Thanks!

    Thanks, good info. For limp-home mode (cold weather, 40F) I pulled that connector to enable the fans and then pulled one relay so that only one fan was running (so it didn't overcool). I'll test the fan thermoswitch later (when replacing the radiator which seeps coolant at the top tank).

    Ok, bought my daughter a 97 Camry with 179,xxx miles the other week (knowing it needed a couple of things done to it that I am more than capable of wrenching on like new struts, brakes, sway bar bushings and end links) and the 5SFE 2.2 had the original factory thermostat stuck open, as it was running very cold and the temperature gauge mainly stayed pegged on C while driving (outdoor temps were 0°-20°F) and would climb about halfway up to normal when stopped at a light. I replaced the thermostat with a new OEM one. Now it comes up to normal operating temperature on the gauge (confirmed with both an OBDII scanner and an IR gun to the thermostat housing) and holds there, but the radiator cooling fan doesn't come on at all (ambient temps have been 45°-65°F) even with high speed runs out on the highway followed by prolonged idling in the driveway. (My 95 Camry with 5SFE engine will kick the fan on and off when idling for prolonged periods).
    I watched your video, with the lower radiator twmperature switch plug disconnected, both the engine cooling and A/C fans operate. All three relays can be felt to be engaging. No change from wiggling, both fans run. Pull #2 relay and engine fan quits. Reconnect lower radiator temp switch, both fans quit. Turn on the A/C system and both fans operate.
    I replaced the lower radiator temperature switch with a known good used one and the engine cooling fan still does not operate. Pulled the connector apart again on the top corner of radiator and both fans came on. Jumpered the two female terminals in the harness plug and the fans went back off.
    Went to the temperature switch (two terminal, green female connector) mounted next to the temp gauge sender in the upper radiator hose elbow on the driver's side of the engine and disconnected the plug. No change, fans did not run. Jumpered the the female plug, nothing. Both the engine compartment 30A fuse and the dash panel 7.5A fuse for the fans were/are fine.
    I'm stumped. Is there a wiring issue to the engine (upper radiator hose elbow) temperature switch? Do I need to replace both the lower radiator and the elbow temperature switches with new OEM switches? I currently have the lower radiator switch harness disconnected to run both fans constantly, as my daughter's daily commute between her apartment and both jobs entails a lot of stop and go driving across town and back and I don't want to run the risk of overheating and toasting her motor.
    Suggestions?

      HI there, did you solve the problem ? I encounter the same case. I guess it might be relay #1 or radiator temp sensor, though 2 mechanics changed them before.

    • @Husker65td
      @Husker65td 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@hubert408 Yes. The system was operating as it should! The coolant temperature just wasn't hot enough to close the temperature sensor! Once summer hit, it would cycle on, and when the A/C was turned on, the second fan would kick on, regardless of ambient or coolant temperature.

      @@hubert408 did you solve this problem?

    • @hubert408
      @hubert408 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@ProvacativeAcorn I am pretty sure that the problem is with radiator sensor. We have 3 temperature sensors: one for engine, for I can read engine temp correctly so it's good. one is called gauge sensor for display only. it's no the problem. Only radiator sensor might cause the problem. Another thing I excluded: all relays work for I can see both fan can turn on.(unplug the radiator sensor cable, both fans would turn on.so control circuit is good) But because some mechanic changed the radiator sensor , my friend believed that sensor should be good. I finally don't know what's the culprit, though I still think the problem is with the radiator sensor.

I just know that you can take a relay and plug it into the tool and it runs a test on it . I do believe that it comes with test relays so you can plug it into the car and check the circuit . When I unplug that cable the fans do not turn on even when the AC is on. The fans don’t turn on when the engine is up to temperature. I checked the resistance of the engine coolant temp sensor on the bottom of the radiator and its reading 7 ohms. I know when its a cold, the engine should be reading 5-6k ohms. I tried bridging the connection of the disconnected wire to bypass the sensor to verify everything else worked and it still did not work. I replaced all the relays and checked the fuses inside and didn’t see any issues. I connected each fan to the battery and they both worked so I am stumped on what else it could be.

    Hi there, Inhave a 2000 Toyota Sienna. The fans only come on when the heater is turned on, when the car is left to idle the fans never kick on. This causes the coolant expansion tank to keep filling until it over flows spilling out as the liquid expands from the engine heat.. There are no codes or check engine light. There are three fan relays back to back just like yours with a brown one in the middle. However the fuse cover doesn't indicate a "Main" fan relay like the large green relay on your camry. There is a large black one that just says Main.

    The fans wirk when the AC is on, but not when the car gets hot to cool the radiatoe. I tried a new relay for fan #1, but it didn't work. The dan kicked on for less than a minute after trying the new relay but went off again. (The heat doesn't work, (the inside fans blow), but did when the fan went on)

    Did you make another video? My original problem was that the oil pressure light on dash was showing up as on but only after engine got hot, and sat at idle. We hooked up a Harbor Freight oil pressure gauge up to it, but it said good oil pressure. Turns out, my fans we're not turning on whenever the engine got hot, causing oil to run thin, causing less pressure (I think that's how the physics should work????)... I replaced the upper radiator hose, thermostat, radiator fan switch(sensor) below the radiator, and the green engine coolant temperature sensor (2 terminal/green one) next to the block. STILL nothing. Fans will NOT turn on. I just ordered the single terminal OTHER engine coolant temp sensor on Rock Auto to see if that will solve the problem. I will report back. Also, I'm not sure if this has anything to do with it, buy my AC doesn't work, but when I swap relays, it will work for a month or two. Then I have to buy another relay. Any advice appreciated. I no this is very basic but it'll definitely keep the parts cannon from coming out in a situation like this. My problem was on a 2003 solara and the fans were not coming on. Turns out the the ECU-IG fuse was taken out. My gf was trying to make the clock work again & was confused on the fuse order in the panel as it relates to the diagram. So b4 u do any thing verify power by ensuring all fuses r n place etc

    • @saneauto
      @saneauto  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The power has to go through the relay to get to the fans. If they came on when you unplugged the sensor the relay is working. That also tells you the fan motor works. The 9 volt test you did also makes me think your relays are working. Try changing the sensor you unplugged. The 96 may be different but the 97 I was working on here has 2 sensors the one at the engine amzn.to/2S993hC but I think the the one in the radiator is different.
