A consistent message I try to provide to game buyers is that digital is worthless after purchase. There is no market price for a digital collection in anywhere near the way a physical game can be redistributed for money. If you had all of those games you sold digitally you'd still be $1200 down. Physical media has a dollar value after purchase and a lot of people have decided to not remember that when they buy, even those that spend thousands in a year. Big ups to you for making the move and this is a great reason to get games in physical form, you can get money if you need to from them. My heart ripped when i saw the destroyed Trails into Reverie you showed. Thanks for the video Brandon!
Im not down money when i pay for a game. Whatever i spend is what i want to pay to experience the game. I dont care to resell my games as that doesnt factor into what i want to spend on a game.
@@sasuke11457 But that's you. From a logical standpoint, OP's comment stands better. And I'm saying this as someone who has less than 300 digital games and less than 200 physical on switch. It's not like you can play all the games you buy, so at the end of the day... you lost money on digital games you'd never get to play and won't be able to get a portion of your money back compared to physical games.
Man, 10,000! So far, I think you deserve 100 times that number. You make content is incredibly genuine, you disclose any relationship you have with a publisher /developer before talking about a game related to those relationships, and you’re clear in describing how your tastes vary from most. But you do give an honest opinion of why the game successfully or unsuccessfully managed to connect with you at that deeper level. Being as honest as I can here, but most TH-cam content is nothing more than speculative trash. “Content Creators” will literally make 5+ videos about one unverified, highly speculative, news story. They just word the video’s title, capitalize different words, but then go on to spend 10+ minutes talking about the same shit as the previous day-regardless of the fact that they know the story they’re reporting on is complete nonsense. There’s a ton of, and I mean a TON, of misinformation spreading around online. Switch 2 is just 1 easy example of content creators speculating on one possibility conjured in their heads, then moving on to report those speculation as fact-either later in the same video, or in the next few videos-and then creating more content about why they were wrong “without” technically being wrong, before moving on to speculate about something else. I’ve seen 5 videos in the past two days about “Let’s talk about MONOLITH SOFT’S Big New Game!” Every time, it’s about statements that higher ups in the company made that only reference the past to say they can’t believe how far they’ve come, and that the future “looks bright” because their partnership with Nintendo is “stronger than ever.” They’re just reminiscing on the fact that they began with big ideas that were impossible to flesh out due to a lack of resources; but now, they’re being sought out to help develop some of Nintendo’s biggest first-party games, and that’s provided them with enough resources to give them confidence that their future projects will never lead to compromises between scope, vision, and scale. You’ve been honest and never misled anyone, nor do you try to use any sort of “insider knowledge” to justify making inaccurate claims. I wish more people watched creators like you, than the hundreds of overhyped gossip mongers out there. I mean their content is literally of the same quality as any AI-generated articles published by the dozens of clickbait gaming news websites that laid off 75% of their staff after realizing they could drive up engagement by polluting web search results with generic, unverified, AI-generated top-10 lists and “5 Things I Wish I Knew Before Playing [Game Googled],” that are almost always completely fucking wrong.
Over the years, when I was just trading in my old game to get the newest one at gamestop it didn't faze me. But after consciously becoming a collector it has been difficult to let go. I got rid of about 30 PSP games a few month's ago and man, it felt great. Im about to do a Nintendo Switch Purge of titles I bought that im not even interested in. I kept telling myself, its nintendo! I have to buy all the Marios, the Kirbys, & the Pokemons. But in reality, I haven't enjoyed those games since the 90's and my tastes have changed. Im all in on JRPG's though. Even if I sold all of my switch games that arent JRPG'S I would still have 100+ titles. Great video
Earlier this year, I sold a substantial pile of retro games to Dynamo Video Games in FL. I was nervous to FedEx my collection to a stranger on the other side of the country based only on a Facebook conversation, but it all worked out. I had found him featured in a video here on TH-cam. He gave me very competitive rates for the lot, which I had priced ahead of time using PriceCharting, and he was quick to pay once he'd received the box and inspected its contents. For pricier items I certainly could have gotten more selling games individually on eBay, but that's a lot of hassle, and you might wait weeks or months before that buyer comes along, and then the fees, etc.
Two weeks ago I had a need-money-fast situation too and also had to sell some games but I did it individually over Facebook Market place and I think I got a pretty fair deal for them. Anyway, now that my situation is better I'm focusing on collecting Nintendo Switch games that i believe could have some good value in the future. It's always a good thing to know that your hobby could get you out of economic troubles if it is required. 😅 P.S. i would LOVE to hear about horror games in your channel too.
Completely different reasons on my end, but I've recently downsized my gaming collection as well. Of course it involves the need for money, but it's also the realisation that I'll never have the time to play everything I own. So I've decided to have a more focused and smaller collection of games I legitimately care about. Not an easy thing to do, but it's gotta be done! Great video my man~
As a tax accountant, odds are you most of the games you sold were at a loss, so even if you get a 1099-NEC/MISC, you should be able to report an expense equal to the "income" to show no gain on those sales.
Literally just had to list some stuff on eBay & dreaded it but need the money & those things will always be available if I want them. Peace of mind is important & life happens! No worries.
Selling stuff and offloading is good man, it makes you understand that these games are truly just objects at the end of the day, no matter how much emotional attachment we give it. Durin 2022 i sold alot of games and made twice as much i did buying them. Im rebuying a very small amount of em but i definitely trimmed the fat of my collection which is what it should feel like ya know. You cant realy eat fat without swallowing it, so lets trim it off the meat and have the good stuff!
As someone who just took 2 boxes down to the local game store and traded them in, it was such an odd experience. Watching them pile up all the games was weird, but walking out of the store with like 1k in store credit was pretty good. Still shopping and grabbing new to me games for free on store credit, and I don't think I miss a single game that was traded to them. Also it is fun to see my games sitting on the store shelves every time I go in.
I don't collect a ton because I primarily game on PC, but I do have a modest Switch collection (and I also collect manga and books, but that's more because I'm a grandpa who has never fully embraced reading digitally lol). From my perspective as a non-collector, I'm very much about keeping a very tight and curated collection. If I don't like something or I know I'm never going to play it again, I don't want it taking up space. The biggest hurdle for me selling is that it takes time and effort to list items, and I don't own a car so I have to walk my sorry ass down to USPS lmao
I've kind of done the same thing in a way, but mine has to do with my steam wishlist and getting games off it that I know I wont play. It's really easy to add a plethora of games on a whim and the list is always there nagging you to clear it up. I dont have many physical games though but there are a couple I know I'll never play again that I should just get rid of. In my mind, even if you get rid of a couple of games that have no meaning to you, that doesn't make you any less of a collector; you're just collecting the one you actually want. And that's almost like the truest form of a collector.
I haven't sold games. I'm normally done trades. Now these days I'm picky about buying certain games and making sure that I actually play them. I think we all went through a phase there where we just wanted to pick up everything. I've done quite a bit of trades in the last 2 years to cut the fat and curate my collection.
For me, I prefer to sell mine for individual prices on fb marketplace and other secondhand sites like Carousell. A lot of my games were bought brand new and only opened to see if the cartridge/cd works (i get anxiety), and then I put them in an acetate clear box and display them in my shelf, so my games are mostly 9-10/10 if not 7-8/10. I buy used games too, but I only buy or trade with cib. I'm very particular about the condition of my games and cases so... yeah. not into graded stuff tho.
I have sold some games before, I needed a quick influx of cash sort of like you. I hated it from the pits of my soul and now 10+ years later I still do since for some reason BF 3 was one of them, there were a few others that I wish I had not either. Even though I am not bit into sports I would hate myself to get rid of NBA Jam T edition, Super Tecmo Bowl, or which ever version of NCAA I have. I roughly once a year will sit down and play them.
I only get rid of games that I hated and I know for sure I'm never going to play again and that I know I can get a good amount of money or trade in credit for. I have a few games in my collection that I know for sure I'll never play again but are still on my shelf because I know I'll only get peanuts for them and its not worth a trip to go trade them in for.
Glad you did the adult thing and sell some games to help with your fiscal responsibilties. There are tubers that have a life crisis and will not sell there games whatsoever for life situations. They bait with trying to get our sympathies for there "fiscal troubles" your smart❤
I recently moved, and despite tossing numerous car loads of stuff, my new place still feels cluttered with a lot of unpacking to go. Is it really worth trying to find places to put all my games, or should I pick a couple favorites and try to let the ones that are likely just going to collect dust find other loving homes? I feel like I should, but can't quite bring myself to make that call a few hundred times.
If I had to part with my physical retail copies of Link to the Past or Suikoden or Chrono Trigger . . . ech. Just knock me unconscious and when I wake up, I've got what I've got.
This is a timely video. I am giving some thoughts to downsizing (I didn't get serious about collecting until 2018 too). Some of the stuff I think I'd like to unload though is hardware. I look around and ask myself "Do I really need five ways to play NES games, and do I even want to play NES games at all.... given that my focus has changed?"
I have to admit, I really try not to buy things I won't like. I've gotten several by accident, and sold them (sometimes back) to my local second hand games store. I feel like I get maybe a quarter of the value they resell them for there. Its a bit of recouped money, but still annoying when I see my game there once its been priced.
Thanks for sharing your experience -- I'm glad it was a positive one! That must've been a scary bill 😟 Huge respect for you for making those adult decisions!
Doubled assessment here too (upstate ny) but double assessment doesnt necessarily mean double taxes, def. increases it but its a bracket so it's not 1-to-1
@@JustTheGems Yeah they're hitting us everywhere, the Property Assessment impacts your school tax too but I assume is included in your escrow so that is probably part of that 4,000. The increased cost at the Grocery Store, now last week I kid you not I get a letter from national grid warning me about rate hikes coming this winter! So what now the Gas or Electric bill is going to be doubling too??? It never ends
I’ve been doing the same thing with my comic book collection. It’s a weird feeling with some of them, like parting with them is like parting with an old friend. I mean, I’ve been collecting for over 30 years now and they’ve been all over the world with me.
I'm already subbed to you for awhile, but holy hell I didn't realize you had less than 10k?! I thought you'd have at least 50-100k with the quality of your videos.
I’m not a big eBay seller but when I do, I sell my games in a lot. For instance, I sold 112 Factory sealed Vita games for 6k. It took a couple months to sell the lot, but it did sell. It wasn’t a problem because I didn’t need the money immediately. I rather sell my games in a lot because I do have a full time job and don’t have the time and energy to sell each game individually. I could have made more money if I did it that way but it was so much easier my way. I understand why you sold them the way you did rather selling individually. I’m looking to sell my Switch collection soon but it will be very hard because I have around 520 games and it will be very hard to find a buyer who will buy them all at once. I actually reached out to Phoenix around a year ago to sell him my entire collection of around 2k games along with tons of CEs. Mind you, 95% of the games are still factory sealed. Price Charting puts my collection at around 80k and if my memory is right, Phoenix offered me 30k. That was too low for me so I passed. Great video Edit: As far as the payment, couldn’t they just send it through Pay Pal as a gift so no fees are charged?
I understand why you didn't take the deal, but a 40% offer is generally considered very fair for a direct sale to a store/reseller. Gamestop offered me $4 for my sealed copy of the Catherine Love Is Over DE for XBOX360. My FLGS offered me $50 or about 30% (I turned them down too).
Couple years back, sold majority of my WiiU collection. Mainly because of space, and some money issues. Got saved by a few games, Devil's Third shrinked wrapped was in there and some point and click adventure game from thq nordic. The adventure game, I guess was worth a lot because it has a glitch that prevents you from completing the game and they never fixed it on that platform 🥴
I don't know where you live. However, if, hypothetically, you live in a big city (a property tax spike that high would only happen in a really big city) that is close to the border of several other states (I am totally just putting out a hypothetical here) you might want to check property values in those other states for similar homes over there. You probably live where you do because of where you and your wife work, or you live where you do because of friends, family or connections to the area, but If you have the ability to cross a nearby state line (or 3, for the sake of argument) there is probably a nearby state that would offer you a far better tax rate with a better standard of living. Only you can decide whether the additional commute to work is worth the trade-off. On a completely unrelated note, due to the widespread corruption, organizational mismanagement and outright criminal negligence of a certain large American city government that had a mayoral election last year, property taxes may be going up to compensate for the loss in sales tax revenue due to city policies driving out businesses. For that reason, property taxes in that particular city are likely to continue to go up over the next few years. Higher property tax rates cause the value of homes to fall. That's totally not related to anything, I'm just putting that out there. Always be sure to do what's best for you and your family, go where you are treated best. I've never sold anything I've collected, as I mostly prefer digital media. I collected comics for many, many years, but for a long time, I donated most of the comics I collected in a given year to a children's hospital during the holidays each year. I am a hoarder, but only in video games, where I never use Zerum Powders and Zerum Capsules because I'm always sure the very next boss is going to require them. In real life, if something is taking up a lot of space, I want to get rid of it and trade it in for something smaller. I always figured that I'd gotten so much joy out of those comics, let some kids have then next and do with them what kids should be doing with comics. I always kept only the ones I was sure I'd read again someday, but I always donated all the other ones every single year.
During covid lockdown game prices started to spike up and i decided to sell out of my collection to get into pc gaming and i never looked back. I was spending more money on my collection than i did on steam. I no longer collect as its an expensive hobby and takes up to much space.
I’m going to sub, just cuz you’re into video game stuff, haven’t seen if you had psp or vita games but it’s my thing and I’m an old man thinking bout selling it all but just can’t cuz I love it 😅

I've sold thousands of games to oneup and never had an issue, they're only going to fully deduct if something is completely trashed like being cracked, rotted, etc. Their customer support is good and will fix you up if you suspect anything was unfairly docked or missed.
@@farmingsim9813 Glad you have had a positive experience. For a rotted out disc, yeah, that disc isn't sell-able. I feel like I get maybe a quarter of the value they resell them for there. Its a bit of recouped money, but still annoying when I see my game there once its been priced.
Haha I know, like dang, I got three bucks for that and it's going for... 15. 🫠
Thanks for sharing your experience -- I'm glad it was a positive one! That must've been a scary bill 😟 Huge respect for you for making those adult decisions!
We out here adulting erryday! 😎
Doubled assessment here too (upstate ny) but double assessment doesnt necessarily mean double taxes, def. increases it but its a bracket so it's not 1-to-1
Yeah, not sure what my bracket is, but hoo boy, either paying $4,000 up front or having an extra $600 a month on the mortgage was... yikes.
The longer they've been in your collection, the harder it feels to part with them, even if they're not something you spend much time looking at.
@@JustTheGems 💯
I'm already subbed to you for awhile, but holy hell I didn't realize you had less than 10k?! I thought you'd have at least 50-100k with the quality of your videos.
That means a lot, thank you!
Great video
Edit: As far as the payment, couldn’t they just send it through Pay Pal as a gift so no fees are charged?
I understand why you didn't take the deal, but a 40% offer is generally considered very fair for a direct sale to a store/reseller. Gamestop offered me $4 for my sealed copy of the Catherine Love Is Over DE for XBOX360. My FLGS offered me $50 or about 30% (I turned them down too).
Yeah, any more selling I do will likely be in a lot, unless I have a really valuable game I'm trying to get rid of.
Oh dang, Devil's Third must have brought a nice bit in!
Yeah I had a situation earlier and I had to sell my collector's edition for octopath and Xenoblade 2. It hurt but you have to do what you have to
You hate to see it, but yeah, it is what it is...🥲
I don't know where you live.
That's actually exactly what we're doing. Just ten minutes from us in a different state, the taxes are like a quarter of what they are here
@@JustTheGems I would advise you to leave as soon as possible. The longer you stay, the worse of a deal you're going to get to leave.
During covid lockdown game prices started to spike up and i decided to sell out of my collection to get into pc gaming and i never looked back. I was spending more money on my collection than i did on steam. I no longer collect as its an expensive hobby and takes up to much space.
My heart sank once again seeing that trails box.....💔
😖😖😖
Im gonna play that someday…such famous last words for games that never get played 😅
Haha 🫠
I honestly would have a really hard time selling any part of my collection. That sucks your property taxes went up that much.
Yeah, it's insane
There's also the fact that 1 of your ebay sales could be "lost" and there goes your profit for the bunch!
Very true!😰
I’m going to sub, just cuz you’re into video game stuff, haven’t seen if you had psp or vita games but it’s my thing and I’m an old man thinking bout selling it all but just can’t cuz I love it 😅
Thanks! Yeah, I definitely have myself a pretty decent PSP and Vita collection!
need a Just the Gems horror-channel
I really want to do one.....
@@JustTheGems would immediately sub tbh
Our first interaction wasn't the best, but I feel for you. Property taxes suck. Good on you for stepping up for the family.
I disagree with you, but still watch your content. Keep it up.
Hey thanks man. I always like it when people can disagree with me but still engage in a positive way - I appreciate you.
Remember that you are talking just about video game. There is no reason to dive into harsh/insult. It's just video game/entertainment. 😁
@@Terranigma23 I understand what you are saying, but gaming is culture, culture is life, people have different views on all of it. Just the Gems doesn't do it anymore, but I watched his entire library. In his early videos, he added his political thoughts on capitalism and Reagan into one of his videos. So don't mind me disagreeing with you that "we are just talking about games" because the person (insert any TH-camr) has personal biases that form their opinions. What I explained to Just the Gems was, I can disagree with his biases, and still enjoy his content and opinions about games because I enjoy living outside the echo chamber.
@@nivekviking9633 politic is in every game, even in Mario Bros if you dig deep. You have the choice to jump on the goomba or not. Don't play the upcoming GOTY JRPG contender "Metaphor ReFantazio" if you can take "politic" in game. PS: who give a damn about old boomer politician from the 1900 era lol. Much better to live in the present.
@@Terranigma23 I won't be buying that game because I'm not a fan of Persona style games, but also, yes, if I were to want to play it, I wouldn't buy it due to the activism of some localizers.
They don't return games if they think they aren't sellable? No way. That's theft. They could also claim a game wasn't sellable, keep it and sell it. 100% profit for them.
But the case and manual of some things can sell quite well (if not more than disc/cart.) In that scenario, they could trash your disc and sell the case and manual on.
I'm fine with counterfeit goods being pulled from the market. But I still think they should return legitimate goods which they aren't going to buy off you.
Whatever you do, just don’t ever sell the beard.
