VoltageLP You are absolutely right! I've built several CNC machines and mostly I use them for making parts for better CNC machines. This has been going on for over two years now with no end in sight. But what the heck... it keeps me out of trouble.

When setting the zero on professional machines we always used a piece of paper as a feeler gauge between the Bit and the workpiece, then subtracted the paper thickness manually in the coding.
Also we had an x y z jog wheel. Essentially a rotary encoder to control movement on the selected axis (which you selected by pushing x y or z button) and you also pressed 1 x 10x or 100x button to control the speed of movement per revolution of the jog wheel.
That would make a great project

I wanted to add a solution to moving the axis of the CNC. On a machine I built back in the 90s, I used a DPST switch at each motor. Each pole of the switch would connect to each winding. You only need to connect the switch to one side of the winding. When you have to move the machine, just flip the switch and move all you want. In later builds, I would put relays at the control board to effectively take the motor our of the circuit. I would then connect the relays to the supply power. So when the machine was on, the motors were connected or armed. When the machine was off, it would take the motors our of the circuit and protect the driver.
There was a discussion about using a diode but it would not work. Because steppers are unique, they can send reverse voltage to perform a higher resolution. Putting a diode would limit voltage only going in one direction.

On my custom built R2D2, I have the same concern of pushing him and generating power that overheats his foot driver board. The maker of the driver board recommends putting a diode circuit around the power switch back to the battery. Perhaps one could do something similar here. Of course, a rechargable battery would need to be added.

This is very much a introduction to CNC machining, with the use of foam as the material a lot of the hard settings to get right did matter as foam is very soft.
When you start to mill wood, PCB's and metal. etc things get a lot lot harder, spindle/tool rotation speed, feed rate how fast you move the tool through the material become very hard to calculate and are related to each other, setting rotation speed effects the feedrate altermately to carry heat away from the tool with the chips of material being removed. This is something i didnt think about when i purchased a CNC machine, it takes some time to build a database of information on your tools and materials to get the cutting speeds right, getting them wrong can be expensive as you will start to snap cutting bits by over heating or over stressing them. I did this
    a lot when first experimenting.

    A question to around 4:15:
In the H-Bridge to the stepper motor are Mosfets build in aren't they?

+The Ben Heck Show , just wanted to say I enjoy your show and find it entertaining. I do have some questions, is there a reason you used foam for this demonstration?, what the toughest material this machine could mill? Also when you were talking about the differences between the machines that had the base move vs the movable gantry I was wondering I what you meant by the setup shown being simpler. Thank you for your time making these videos and for your response, be well.

He makes a fantastic point about moving the gantry quickly causing back EMF from the motors back to the board. Those boards may not be protected for that type of usage. It's a good point especially when transporting a CNC and the thing is flying around in the
back seat of a car, and you arrive with a fried microcontroller board. But who knows. Some of those boards may have protection for that. But still. Why chance it.

    • @ballzack57
      @ballzack57 8 ปีที่แล้ว

+Jeff Since Ben was very clear about that subject, I can only assume you wanted to post in order to co-opt his intelligence. A point further buttressed by your use of Electromotive Force (EMF). The potential voltage generated by manual movement is only half of the concern. There are amperes to consider.

If diodes are used with the DC motors it would keep the voltage from going backwards to the board, when motor is moved quickly by hand.

+BlackLocustMusic They are stepper motors. They are not really "AC", but they aren't exactly "DC" either. If you start putting diodes in to prevent them from sending back emf into the control board, they aren't going to run.

Ben did an excellent job introducing CNC to folks who are new to the hobby. It's a blast to get into and doesn't have to be crazy expensive. Machines can be built for under $500 that are pretty capable. Or, a very good entry machine (3040) can be found on eBay or Amazon for around $600. There is all kinds of free and open source software available as well. There are even plug ins for Inkscape that let you generate the gcode right within the program: www.keerbot.com/generating-gcode-using-inkscape/
It can seem intimidating but it's really not after a short period of time.
I have a bunch of videos of my CNC build using drawer slides and fuel line hose. The machine has worked extremely well for all kinds of projects. I started with a rotary tool and then built a larger gantry to hold a regular sized router bit.

Ben, we turn wooden and acrylic Pens on a lathe. We'd like to build some kind of CNC to engrave them.
Any suggestions? We want it simple and cheap, (if that's feasible)! And YES we subscribed, and thumbs up!
