Great comparison. I’d been debating which one of these 2 cookers I should buy next. I’m really impressed with the outcome of your cook on the Big Joe. Great work and fantastic channel Elk. Keep ‘em coming.
Awesome video mate and a great amount of detail. I've been asked a lot recently about KJ Vs Summit so great to have a video to point people to! Keep up the good work on the channel mate, awesome seeing it take off for you 👊🔥
Thanks very much mate, means a lot. It's a long video but hopefully not too boring! You were one of the people that inspired me to start the channel, so thank you!
Thought your comment was about swearing to start with 😂 why do you think C is easier? They are just numbers you have to remember. I use F because I got started from American TH-cam videos. Are the relevant numbers in C easier to remember? E.g rounder numbers?
I posted below a while back. I since got the Summit and am delighted. It tends to be rock steady which made me think about your temp variations. I think with it dropping off so much there looks to have been a charcoal catching problem- fire was dying out? I’d like to see some more Summit on your channel- they are selling in large numbers now cheaper.
Thanks for the video, very good. Would love a Big Joe 3 but not sure can justify the £1000 extra over the Summit. The temp fluctuations on the Sunmit though cause me real concern here, seems it cannot match ceramic stability so I may go with a Costco next. I have to have stability being used to that in the lowly Aldi Kamado I have now,
Loved the video, I’m in the market for a Kamado style cooker and narrowed it down to these 2, your video was a great help, I’m wondering if the slo roller was the reason the brisket from the joe was more Smokey?
The sloroller helps I think as there is a lot more headroom above the fire, allowing better airflow and combustion. You can't go wrong with either grill to be honest but in my opinion, the KJ just has that extra bit of quality and wow factor all over. Plus it has the Joetiserrie! 😉
The Smokin' Elk I looked at the summit in a shop today, and although you can see it’s a more quality product than say a master touch, it’s not massively so, not for the much more money you are spending. In your test the KJ was much more stable heat wise and that’s massive for me for overnight cooks. Looks like you made my mind up, cheers mate 👍
British briskets need to go a bit further than grain fed I find. These were slightly over but remained juicy and damn tasty! Plus I'm using them for a series of leftover brisket videos so wasn't too concerned 😎
Epic. Did you consider doing these with the fat cap down, or is it not necessary with the flame deflector? Do you keep the cap up so the fat renders down into the meat?
Thank you. To be honest, I've always just cooked them fat cap up. I'm not sure if it's the best way or not. Maybe I need to cook two more briskets, one up and one down and decide! :)
Great comparison, nice to see someone cooking British brisket. One question, what did you wrap them with, foil, paper, and did you add any liquid? Thanks
Wonder how the Summit would do with a BBQ Guru fan added on. That may help to keep the temp up. For its price, it should not really need an add on, but the fact they put it there means it can be done.
Great stuff found your channel yesterday. I am seriously weighing up between the two, was set on the Summit but due to the lack of accessories and the fact I have 5 webers already, I am leaning back towards to KJ 3. How is the KJ for quick grilling?
There is a company that does a rotisserie for the summit. With that in mind would you still go for the Joe over the summit? Big decision and the Joe is a lot more money for the same grill space
Very nice comparison cook, i was surprised by the summit losing temp so steadily but as you say it still within cooking temps. All those hours without a Beer, Fatherhood's changed you mate!
I tried a pork butt comparison cook a little while back and didn't use it because the Summit went out! And I've just cracked open my 3rd Stella this evening haha
@@TheSmokinElk good lad lol I'm having red wine tonight. Got some beef shin for tomorrow going to do over the top chilli following you but having onions garlic and beans. I still am amazed at how rock solid the temp stays on my KJ classic 3. Weber kettle will be out more in the summer, i get more exercise controlling the temps !
Just discovered your channel and that was a great video for people trying to choose between the two. I used a Big Green Egg for years and now use the Summit and there's no doubt that ceramic style pits hold temps more stable on longer cooks. The summit still gets the job done as well in terms of quality bbq but at times needs to be babied a little more. If i had to choose just one bbq it would be the Summit because i think its just a bit more flexible overall but a big disappointment has been Webers lack of support in terms of accessories. It looks like they have pretty much abandoned it after the initial hype when it was launched. Anyways, thats my two pence worth. Keep up the good work mate and would be interesting to see other types of comparisons between the two with different types of cooks
Hi. Thanks for watching. I'd choose the Kamado Joe because of all the extras, especially the Joetisserie. I'm amazed Weber havent released accessories for this. I also think if Weber had come in at £999, they could have taken a big chunk of that market. Maybe they need new marketing people!
@@TheSmokinElk yeah agree on the price point. Should be coming in below £1200. Have you seen this? thebarbecuelady.nl/product/kamado-rotisserie-spit-on-fire-summit/ Great bit of kit. I also think in the US there are a lot more third party accessories available for the Summit. Pity Weber haven't bothered
Out of interest. If I ordered from Phillip Warren butchers; what do I order to get this exact cut? Everyone in America seem to always get these huge cuts and never talk about getting a point end or anything like that🤔
I would say the KJ brisket you cooked looked a fair bit more trimmed or leaner than the brisket you had in the summit, I would expect more “ bark “ on the Kj brisket. But you can get a summit for 1/3 of the price of the kj, plus the summit you can move around and fit the KJ add on’s. As much as I love the Kj the summit is the all round winner. Well done Weber once again
I think you've helped me make my mind up about buying a Summit or large Kamado. Now the question is do I go for a Big Joe 3 vs a Monolith Le Chef Pro 2 Great video!
I will have to try another brisket on my Weber Summit. You left quite a lot of fat on/almost all. I'll have to ask my meat men friends to keep it on next time. Brisket I did was a little overdone. The Firebox looks like a great accessory to use. Keep up the good work. Enjoy your young one.
@@TheSmokinElk little update. Bought the FireBox. Worked great on the huge Christmas ribroast. It was really cold out that day, too, so nice to be inside. Made two slight adjustments to the top vent, but it was cool to see/have the fan kick on and in the date report.

Awesome video, Elk. Thanks for doing this experiment and I like all the detail!
No worries, glad you like it!
Incredible video!
Thanks very much!
Fantastic video, great job. Why do you use F though instead of C? using Celsius is so much easier
Thanks. It's just habit. Learnt from American BBQ to start with so kind of got used to it. I do use C a lot as well though haha

Hey. Sorry, I sold my Summit so there wont be any more videos on it at the moment I'm afraid!
Was watching a Baby Back Maniac one where he did the same thing and the Weber seemed to have a bit more bark.
I may do another one soon!
Great video! Nice job
Thanks very much!
Well I was considering both of these units as a future upgrade, interesting information to help me choose the heavier grill 😁
I'd always recommend the Kamado Joe!

They were wrapped in pink butcher paper, kept it simple with no liquid.

They are both fantastic grills but the KJ edges it for me for the accessories (Joetisserie!)
