As a Military history buff living in Sweden with a special interest in the American Civil War, these videos are absolutly brilliant thanks to StuffWriter and a unique way to get main, side and back stories on site while being so far away. Matt is one of a kind indeed. Even my spouse finds this interesting! I have been fortunate to visit Gettysburg twice.

There are very few people that study and lecture on historical events that can truly bring history out of the pages of books and make it truly come alive and real until you can see it, visualize it in the most smallest detail. You can feel it as well. These guys and gals you can listen to for hours in the history courses and not get the slightest wave of boredom..
Matt Atkinson is one of them! Indeed, a National Treasure. Through his knowledge and skill of truly bringing Gettysburg to life.
I concur Gettysburg must be preserved for ages and fallen there; Both North and South should never be forgotten and the epic courage, heroism, sacrifice that took place there.
Thank you Stuffwriter for finding Matt and posting his guided tours for decades now.

Been to Gettysburg a couple times. 30 years ago, but have been. Not sure if I'll ever make it back, but if i do i pray Matt Atkinson is still there. When Matt retires, there needs to be a monument to him there

Matt is the best civil war historian ive ever seen. I want to go to Gettysburg just to spend a few days taking his tours...... When he retires the National Park Service will never be the same..... Trump needs to give him an award of some type if hes elected again.

One always gets significant little details from Matt's presentations.
In this case I learned, with mention of a leader's conference in the Peach Orchard, that Lee and Lonstreet had firsthand knowledge of the terrain and distance Lee was sending the attack across.
I had always entertained that both Lee and Meade had made poor tactical decisions and troop placement based on not appreciating how much the ridges diverged as you go south and just how uneven the space between Cemetery Ridge and the Emmitsburg Pike really is.
The terrain helps explain (not justify) Sickle's decision for example. But the diagonal attack across and in front of the Union line definitely demonstrates that Lee, despite previous actions, sure wasn't thinking straight that morning.

I think they should put a memorial up of Mat on that Battlefield but make sure it's when he's younger with his hair.

What if the NPS allowed does operating on the battlefield and demonstrate the battle via drone stand ins. Color coordinate and or label them with regiments like they do fighter squadrons.

1:10:00. For historical perspective, on July 29, 2024, Baltimore Orioles catcher James McCann was hit in the face by a fastball by Toronto pitcher Rodriguez. He was dropped with a nosebleed but got up and took first base. McCann stayed in the game. Toronto and Baltimore split the double header 8-4 and 5-11, respectively.

If Longstreet had chosen to independently cancel the charge based upon failed artillery results, would he have been forgiven/allowed this decision? This would have forced the feds to attack by next day and Longstreet would have had his defensive action as he wanted?

There is an excuse that Lee was less than 100 %, yet all agree his greatest battle took place just two months earlier.
Sounds like excuse making for a general who just plain blew it.
