Its sunday morning 7 o clock in Germany. And what better can there be, as a lecture from Matt the magic Atkinson brought to me from the legendary stuffwriter? Nothin!! Thanks mates for the splendid hour!
This is like medicine, Matt heals. His lectures must be preserved for posterity. Mobile phone camera, Matt speaking, sounds of nature and atmosphere of night falling, all better than 90% of high end TH-cam or TV production. Knowledgeable healing spirit, a good (great) communicator, good technical medium to translate it, good will on afficionado's (translator's) part - all one needs to have a slice of peace on Earth.
Always a pleasure. A talk from Matt is unlike any other. In presentations from other historians, you may get from Point A to Point D a lot quicker, but with Matt, it's the journey that counts. Both approaches are fine, but with Matt, I always feel like I'm traveling with a friend.
Fantastic presentation, and also glad to see Matt talking about Vicksburg. A welcome digression from all the Gettysburg content. Matt’s closing monologue on Grant is incredible and very emotional. Thanks Matt, for teaching us all, and stuffwriter for making it possible for all of us (virtually) attend.
A brilliant talk I don't know much of the civil war as I live Wales uk and some time some of the jokes are a bit of a mystery but I enjoy Mr matt Atkinson's talksare full of info which I can follow with much interest keep it coming best wishes
I was born in Vicksburg and grew up in Port Gibson . I knew bits and pieces about the battle but this was a great presentation and now I know the full story. According to an account of why my home town wasn’t burned is because Grant said it was too beautiful to burn
Thanks Stuffwriter. Listening to Ranger Matt (through the awful noise of that traffic) is both enlightening and therapeutic. I would've loved to have listened to him in person, but I live in the UK. BTW, 56:00 "First astronaut" :D
I only wish I could have seen this lecture before I visited Vicksburg several years ago. I had read up on the batte but this would have made it a much better experience!
Has Matt ever given a talk on a Northern victory? Anything that I have seen him expound on has always been battles that the South won. The North did win, you know. They would have won much sooner if Lincoln did not have such terrible Generals that would not fight. As far as Grant not surrendering….have a look at Lee’s record. Look at the number of Southern men that died for nothing at Gettysburg. Then Lee went off and left most of his dead and wounded lying on the field! Grant was fighting for something he believed in while Lee knew from the start that they could not win….and he said so himself! Lee actually made those Southerns believe that they could win. No wonder he could not live with himself after the war.
A campfire talk with Matt and the knowledge he possesses is one of the greatest events known to man.
Facts lol

I love the wood thrush serenade (my favorite songbird) through so much of the talk

This was a great & riveting talk, I watched the whole thing. Matt is a great story teller.
I like Matt. He's well studied and fair in his political historical views.

Another enjoyable talk from Ranger Atkinson
Everything Stuffwriter posts of Matt should be preserved in the library on congress
I got a postcard last year from Vicksburg National military park. My aunt's went down river on a cruise and stopped there.
Nicely done Matt and StuffWriter, I always learn something new from your presentations.
Outstanding...
Really very good indeed
Fortunate people who live near Gettysburg I’d be at every lecture. 😁👍

Matt Atkinson needs his own Civil War TV series he did great as a guest star in that blood and fury series.
To this day, if you take a cruise out of New Orleans, they will stop and switch captains when they get to open water off the Mississippi River.
😁👍

All the time when he does a talk on Gettysburg.
This video is literally about a Union victory.
This was an excellent presentation on Vicksburg. I will take this lecture and dig into Vicksburg a little bit more. Thanks Matt !
No pun intended !! 😊
