Matt is amazing. He's so good with kids. Educating new generations is paramount to the preservation of the park. Falling asleep. My thoughts aren't organized good night 😴
My great-great grandfather was in Company H of the 13th Mississippi. He was shot in the foot near the Sherfy barn during this charge. He crawled onto a haystack near the barn to put a torniquet around his leg. The haystack caught on fire and a Yankee soldier pulled him off the haystack to keep him from getting burned. He couldn't walk after that, so after dark he crawled all the way back to their original position in the tree line. He couldn't retreat with his unit after the battle, so he stayed on the battlefield and was captured on July 5th. He was sent to the General Hospital in Gettysburg, then to the David's Island POW camp in New York. He was released in a prisoner exchange in August and returned to his unit. The only battle he missed in four years was Chickamauga.
@@travisbayles870 I'm sorry to hear that. It's hard to imagine the experiences those guys went through in the war. In many of the large battles, General Lee put Barksdale's Mississippians right in the middle of the battle because they were so tough. I don't know how any of them survived four years of that.
As someone with health problems and a run of bad luck the last few weeks (long hospital stay). Matt & Stuffwriter are doing God’s work. Thank you gentlemen! Bless you both!
These programs have become a fond companion of mine. These videos have helped me through some tough times and they have become a comfort. Being a professional musician having to be away from my family often, I listen or watch these vids to keep me at home while stuck in a bunk in a bus with a bunch of numbskulls lol. I’m Extremely grateful for the time spent archiving these battle walks for the public. Having 8 direct ancestors in 3 different confederate units from North Carolina, this conflict has always captured my heart. Ranger Matt is the best!! Make sure you guys go to GETTYSBURG at least once! I’m glad that you are on the mend, by the way! Bless.
I can't thank you enough StuffWriter for uploading these. Despite having a stressful job and not having much down time, your videos relax me as well as being educational. Again, I can't thank you enough.
Great a new battlewalk with my favourite ranger matt and my favourite general William Barksdale. I never understand why this part of the battle and s hardly ever spoken about because what they achieved was incredible, no more could have been asked of those brave soldier and in the end no man couldhave given more
No time whatsoever to watch this now. But I’m commenting to say I will one day soon have 2 hours and 39 minutes to kill and I will dive headfirst into this. Matt is the best, a story teller with natural ability to convey the whole picture in a way that’s very entertaining from his own Southern perspective…without really being seriously biased. As a southerner I can really appreciate the honesty while staying true to history. He’s my favorite and I thank you StuffWriter for all the good work you’ve done and posted
StuffWriter, Thank you once again for everything you do! Also thank you Ranger Matt ( I’ll just refer to you now as Captain whiskers 😂😂😂) . I just found out my Relative was with the 11th company A University Greys . A.J. Dew. UM class of 62 Phi Kappa Psi. So I have been trying to find more info on him all I have gotten so far. So your video was right on time ! Last time I was in Gettysburg was for the 130th Reenactment and for the filming of Movie . 🎥 thank y’all once again for great video and turning your camera around 😂😂😂 Captian Whiskers you take care as well if you are reading this Butch McLaren over Facebook.
Hello, please tell me relationship between stuff, writer and the park. Rangers. Is he like a mystery man? Is he like pen to tell her? Does he do the writing or just the video work?
Man you're one of the best story tellers, Great depictions. My favorite video of yours is Devil dens 124th NY regmt. The orange blossoms. -As a combat veteran His qoute "The men Must see us today" is resounding. It speaks to his character and love for his men the direness of the situation and more. Thanks Matt for bringing this and so much more to life for Us all. Huzzah !! 🇺🇸
I’m just so thrilled to see my favorite battlefield ranger historian pop up for a new tour. Love u Matt and thx so so much stuff writer. And the “Jesus don’t want me for a sunbeam” nirvana lyric mixed in there blew my mind,Great pull lol. One of my favs off the MTV unplugged album too Matt.
Thanks StuffWriter and Matt. These clips are entertaining, therapeutic and educational. The Conan quote at 2:03 almost had me fall off my chair! I thought the answer to any brush clearing issue was a herd of goats? All the best from the UK.
My grandmother's grandfather Pvt Benjamin Tully, B Company, 114th Pennsylvania was taken prisoner in the area of Shefley's farmhouse. He was taken to Virginia and paroled about three months later
The moment the go-carts came along; Matt's face is worth a million. He also would have been a great comedian: But thanks to the Lord, he is our Gettysburg Matt! ;-)
How do you know where and when Matt will be performing a battle walk? My father and I have been there several times but can’t seem to sync up when he’s giving tours.
They are listed on the Gettysburg National Battlefield website. Go to "Plan your visit", then "Things to do". Click on "Ranger Programs" and Gettysburg Battlefield Walks. I don't see July posted yet, but they will list the tours and who is conducting them.
The best strategic general the United States ever produced, Robert E Lee decided he was going to be a tactical general. And one of the best tactical general Longstreet decided he wanted to be a strategic general…. Just my thoughts.. Lee greatest strength was picking and his hands off approach with his tactical commanders .. and he broke that mold and cause died.
i have said for a long time the biggest mistake they made was giving general Dan a start for the start they should have made him a full bird would have saved alot of Sickles related issues including him not having command of a corps at Gettysburg
Isn't it also true that Longstreet strictly forbade McLaws from reconnoitering earlier in the day, when Lee was making clear what his intentions were? Another lost opportunity...and why was that? Longstreet...
Robert E Lee and Jeb Stuart are entirely to blame. Lee was so passive during the battle and only sent one message. Lee''s information was so bad before and after day 1 that he should have withdrawn and wait for Stuart. Yet he listened to Ewell and Early about "morale" and stayed there. Meanwhile those two eggheads did nothing in the battle.

@@travisbayles870 That's interesting. They definitely would have known each other. Did your great great uncle survive Gettysburg and the war?
@DonQuixote1918 yes but later he feel off a paddle wheel boat and drowned

Same goes for me. For someone who can no longer travel, this is great for me.
Yes, it's a blessing. This kind of presentation got me through many bleak, long and dark nights. Get better soon 🙏

Rockin ' facial hair Matt. Very Hetfield like.
Ranger Matt and Barksdale riding into glory together, arty bait
Are those maps the Laino ones? I've contemplated buying that one.
My ggg grandfater was in pattersons battery. They went in on the left of barksdale.
I believe it was Epaminondas from Thebes who first used the echelon maneuver for attack during the battle of Leuctra.
I remember seeing the lyrics to a Civil War song popular with German volunteers;
"I go to fight mit Sykles.."
@stuffwritter or anyone else know what walks Matt will be doing the week of the 4th ?

The opposite is true regarding Robert E. Lee.
Tonight is July 1st, 2024. 161 years ago the Men of the North and South were engaged in a deadly struggle where this camera points.
A fourth generation Mississippian heard a new Mississippi saying while watching this video: "Put fight in a whooped chicken."
Does any one know if he will be doing this battle walk during the anniversary?
Check the National Park Service Gettysburg website Ranger Program page for battlewalks.
Doesn’t Matt look so cool wearing that beard
Barksdale one of my favorite generals
Nice shout out to Dan Welch leading an anniversary tour on July 2nd at 1:16.08. I've enjoyed Dan's tours before.
The whole damn battfield was Sickles monument.
How did Mississippi get these OP troops?
Amazing video 🙂🇩🇰

Blame it on Lincoln. Money talks back in the 1860’s just like it does in the 21st century.
Poor doggo out in that heat.
There's always one out of control giggler in ever crowd!
Oh no. This video is going to make that "Project Past" TH-cam guy sooooo mad.
Love Matt, but he's too hard on Longstreet. Read Cory Pfarr. Lee was with Longstreet much of the time.
matt is the goat... csa 3rd corp messed up. otherwise. yankees were done....

There's always the one... Like the kid in class raising their hand when everyone was ready to get out of class ...
Too many commercials. so disruptive.
Clickbait - it takes nearly an hour before he ever gets to Barksdale
Yes. And always joking and grab-assing on hallowed ground.
Is Matt still with Angie? Hope so. Both are amazing at what they do.
