If you are a Naruto fan like I am, I’m pretty sure you’ve practiced their hand seals for a jutsu. But of course, you will not have fire coming from your mouth or lightning sparking from your hands.
What’s interesting though is that the real ninja in history actually did these hand signs.
But what were they really for?
These ninja hand seals are called 九字印 Kuji-in (nine hand seals), and they were not for performing any jutsu, but for personal mental concentration and autosuggestion.
The missions the ninja were given obviously could lead them to death, so by performing 九字印 they prepared their minds for anything that could happen.
This concept comes from the hand seals that 修験者 Shugenja, Buddhist monks who did rigorous training in the mountains, did before entering the mountains to create a barrier within their hearts to protect themselves from demons.

He does that with other words to when speaking in English. It's just the natural flow of English to speak it like that. English has it's own cadence, and Japanese has it's own cadence.

What is the concept of a Zanbato, is it real or is it a word use to differentiate between real swords and abnormally big swords in anime
I know part of it has to do with striking down enemy soldiers on horseback, but yeah would love the full story behind that as well..
@@TheQuestionmarkstudi I thought it was for beheading the horses itself back in the day in the battlefield and not the rider, it was used before they knows or the introduction of firearms to counter the cavalry units. But soon became obsolete because how impractical, not easy to handle, pricey, and a waste of iron resources to makes one of that sword.
And it was easier to master spears and making a fence or digging a trap when fighting with the cavalry units.

If I'm not mistaken, Shugenja were not necessarily Buddhist, but rather practitioners of Shugendo, a mountain-worshipping religion. They're often practiced syncretically and Meido Roshi, a Rinzai Zen abbot near me actually practices both. It's a rigorous ascetic practice that is not for the faint of heart

Yes. The sheikah and yiga clans use them the same way that they're used in naruto.
I actually memorized these when I used to meditate more and whenever someone saw me they thought I was a big Naruto fan

The handsigns are also descended from the yogic tradition on Mudras in India, used for meditation and mental concentration
In India, we call them "Mudras". They are of extreme Spiritual, Conscious and Subconscious significance.

It is great to know that you did a short on Kuji-in, actually perform it to do as you had stated, for concentration, but also for spiritual protection, it may not be traditional given my omnistic beliefs, but if I had the opportunity to, I would love to learn from ninja, samurai, and monks, ninja and samurai can cover quite some physical aspects while monks can cover spiritual aspects to things help to achieve balance between both aspects.

Thank you for these videos! I have been very interested in Japanese history and culture since I was 10 years old, and these videos make my day.
Here I thought they were more practical: silent communication for operations that required multiple people.
I actually learned this beforehand. There is a youtube channel called "gaijin goombah" who has a series called "which ninja" that compares ninja from media from those of the past and in their Naruto episode they talked about this.
My first guess was that they were a distraction of some sort. Mental preparation makes a lot more sense, though.
I always thought it was a form of silent communication that woumd have been used when teams of ninja were in hostile territory to help avoid being caught

Its a bit embarrassing to say but I found out bout this from like teenage mutant ninja turtles where it took on more of its original use in the show as a meditation. I wasn't able to learn it when I was young but I might try again since I can imagine using it for its meditation
There is something similar too in culture of hinduism and that methods are also used for meditation and as remedy for minor mental problems. Those are called 'Mudras'(मुद्रा) or 'Hastamudra'(हस्तमुद्रा)
