There is so much music. I frequently listen to Tchaikovsky, Brahms, Beethoven and more of course, but there is so much music I never listened to, f.i. this music. Every time I discover music what is completely new to me and very enjoyable.

The symphonies of Rimski-Korsakov are scandalously underrated by a small number of pieces which are of course excellent (capriccio Espagnol, Great Russian REastern, Sheherazade), but should not mlead us to forget the other compositions of the Russian master (including the operas, poorly known outside Russia).

@@pasqualeterzi230 I think it is quite difficult to say such a thing in a general way. He was a very brilliant orchestrator, for sure, he gave a shining image of Russian legends and sceneries in his excellent operas and tone poems. Thiis obviously a major contribution. But Moussorgski, for instance, a gave a more rough and realislitic vision; he was in particular and one of the best composers of lieder, together with quch xomposers as Chubert, Schumann, Wolf, Duparc, Fauré, Janacek. Scriabin is quite unique by his harmonic and rythmic writing and could be on the sale list as Debussy or Schoenberg. And the derak side of XXth century Russian life under Stalin and followers ciuld hrdly be best rendrerd than by Shostakovitch or Schnittke. Actually, the "musical space", as for amy other art, is all but unidimensional and various composers are "the best ones" to depict one musical feature, whether illustrative or abstract.

@@gerardbegni2806 I agree that each composer excels with his own peculiarities, but each of us prefers the musical art form according to our training, culture, predisposition, but above all according to our own soul, our own vision of life. Because music is not just technicality, music is emotion. Music is the only medicine without side effects. Obviously this is my very personal idea. Have a nice day, sir.

Many thanks for uploading this excellent symphony. Rimsky-Korsakov is a well-known name in classical music, but generally only for a few of his works- a couple of operas such as "The Golden Cockerel" or "The Snow Maiden" and a few "programme" orchestral works like "Scheherazade", "Russian Easter Festival" and "Capriccio Espagnol". His symphonies are comparatively neglected, especially in the West, so I was glad to come across this one.

The classical music heritage is so rich, but in live performances we experience a very limited repertoire. I think Rimsky-Korsakov was not inferior to Tchaikovsky , but most of his works are rarely performed in the West. He composed so many wonderful operas for instance, they are rarely staged outside of Russia. Even only 2 operas of Tchaikovsky are ever performed.

  • @owenmcgee8496

I like the bears. and didn't actually know that Rimsky-Korsakov wrote symphonies. Well, isn't that nice. Full screen mode and you can better smell the pine. And maybe marvel if anyone can play some notes in C major, who can write like this. Or, at least, that's what I'm gonna do for another 20 minutes or so. at the 23 minute mark, I've figured out what the bears are doing. When a tree is broken like that, all the tasty little insects inside it can be easily eaten. The bear cub showing off his bum reminds me of the painting "waking up" by martin gale. juxtapositions of light and figures and all that. early morning sunrises in forests are cool. I saw a Polish forest once. But was in disbelief when somebody told me there's bears in there. A river made it an inaccessible forest anyway. There was a small wooden church built on plinths stretching across the river somewhere near by. Dated from a time when it was illegal to built churches on land, so someone came up with a clever little idea. There was also a graveyard in a neighbouring village where all the headstones were totem-poles because the church was unmanned for generations and all the local villagers didn't know how to make anything except out of carved wood and paint because they were carpenters, saunders and painters only. Zakopane was the name of the village, if I remember right. Forgot about all that until I started thinking about forests, bears and the smell of pine and I seem to have got a bit distracted from the music.

I have noticed that a lot of Russian recordings have a very reverberant sound. This can make the sound more "epic", but can also be quite tiresome after a while. Perhaps it's a matter of taste and fashion. A drier, lighter and closer sound is less forgiving for the players.
Anyway, thanks for the upload of this great music.
