    Balakirev's music is often so attractive, with well-crafted Russian melodies allied to colourful harmonies and textures - this work is no exception. I much enjoyed listening!

    The soul of Russia in his music. Masterful orchestration so like Rimsky yet unique with true Slavic flair and bonhomie. Gotta love the Mighty 5.

    Listen to my favorite music genre makes me cry. The beauty, not everyone can apreciate it. You need to put attention on detail, it is like falling in love over and over with the music.

    Of the group of 5, only Rimsky-Korsakov, Borodin and Balakirev composed symphonies. Mussorgsky also had an unfinished symphony. Though all their symphonies are beautiful masterpieces, Balakirev #2 is the best example of their Russian style IMHO. The Andante at 18:19 is simply heavenly bordering on Tchaikovskian stratosphere.

    Splendid picture ! While strolling in the meadows of the present, you can pick bouquets of crazy and improbable flowers, come back with sumptuous extracts of this sensitive musician and skinned and say that you sometimes gain time to ignore so much of these contemporary musics to finally gain in serenity :-)

    What makes greatness go viral is beyond me, or anybody as far as I am concerned. This is greatness that has been around a long time. Yet, I am among those who fail to listen to it often enough.

    The first movement has somewhat of a Brahmsian feel. The first couple of notes remind me of the beginning of the Tragic Overture of Brahms.

    • @NedFlanders612
      @NedFlanders612 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Would make sense. Brahms is only 4 years older than Mily.
      It is highly likely Balakirev came across Brahm's works. When I first listened to "Brahms - Violin Concerto in D Major Op.77: 3. Vivace Non Troppo" in "There will be blood" I was like "OH WTF! 😍😍😍😍😍😍"

    Would someone mind taking a moment to explain to me *why* one note is preferred over another when composing a symphony (or other classical form). Surely the reason is not "ease of play" (such as opting for B-flat in consideration of the trumpet), as other instruments are tuned in varying keys. One doesn't see many symphonies in G for example but C and F Symphonies seem quite common, I hope there is a clear answer on this. Thank you!

      frappait sur un piano une gamme diatonique  en do et ensuite frappait que les noires la réponse et là; cela ne sonne pas pareil, c'est un peut plus compliqué mais ca vous donne une idée

    • @ascovers5132

      This is late, but I think it could have something to do with the quality of the key that is chosen. Some keys, like F major, have a bright and ringing sound, while Db major is more soft and steady. I'm not confident that's why some keys are chosen over others, but it might be a contributing factor.

    • @klop4228
      @klop4228 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I disagree that G's uncommon, but it's mostly because of how it 'feels', to be honest. Even if all keys sound equivalent, each has a different sort of feel.
      Otherwise, it's often just arbitrary.

    • @micjvsa

      apologies for the late reply on a fascinating topic. Folks have alluded to the "feel" of a specific keys - and turns out this has a name, synaesthesia. This is a short an interesting take on it www.perfect-pitch-music.com/color-and-music.html

      Part of the lore of the piece . You will come to love it. Not sure who was in this orchestra - so many governments,v ensembles, directors etc changed after the end of the Soviet time. But the conductor Golovchin is immensely talented and I hope he has good management. Right now best known for being on budget labels like " Point",NL, $1.99 but this will change. He is a great talent .
      On to the Symphony #2. Some call it an anachronism but who cares. It's delightful. Lots of Borodin's influence and for me that's a good thing. Since Glazunoff topped off so much Borodin maybe it crept into the Balikirev #2 . Again, who cares. Glazunoff was great too. ( Conducted down the street from me in Detroit after emigration and every time I'm in there for Symphony, done old Russian " whispers" " The Hall Gabrilowitch Built" , Mark Twain's daughter Clara Clemens' husband)
      Do not miss his " Tamar". A wonderful time in pre,- Soviet Union Russian Music. Paris Conservatoire Orch ( gone) under Wolff , or Ansermet / on😀Decca that after, ORSR.

    Balakirev's symphonies are entirely painted with Ukrainian ornament, both the first symphony and the second by the first. and as a confirmation of this, they are illustrated here with pictures from the history of the Ukrainian people .. it's time to learn to distinguish Ukrainians from the conglomerate of ethnic groups of the Russian Empire, good gentlemen.

      In the West we still have the perception that it is one whole thing, as URSS used to be. It will take some decades before this (wrong) perception fades away and dies out. For us, Russia (also romantically intended at “the East”) begins in Berlin or in Vienna and ends in Vladivostok.
