I have had the pleasure of talking a bit with Wayne quite a few times, and we always had fun. I am also a Luthier here in Virginia, about an hour or so from Wayne's place, but have not talked to him in years. I really need to visit him soon. He is a national treasure, and as friendly and humble as one person can be. My guitars will never be as good as a Henderson, but I will keep trying to reach anywhere close to his level of the art.
I've read "Clapton's Guitar" but it's a treat to just hear what a down-to-earth, humble guy Wayne is. It's nice to know there are people with talent who stay grounded in this age where there are many with not so much talent who think so much of themselves.
Was around that fellah growing up, had no clue I was in the midst of a living legend. He’s an absolute gentleman and treated me like royalty (10 year old boy who could hardly play).
I feel like there should be a 15 year old kid just following him around learning. We need to preserve his catalog of skills and knowledge. When he looks up at the camera his eyes tell a story of a man with a pure heart. You just want to sit with him and listen to all his stories.
@@thetrippylife3948 i left the comment like 2 minutes into the video. I thought about editing it. Then I learned he teaches classes at his school as well. Thank you for this video.
I had the privilege of meeting and speaking with Wayne at Merlefest. Such a nice unassuming guy who was happy with some conversating! He and his daughter gave a presentation about building that was amazing. Big fan, a true character and gentleman!
When you look at this man you may not realize that you are looking at an American treasure. I know I will never own one of his works but it is a privilege to see a Stradivarius level artist in our time. Great video. Thanks for sharing. Something in the water in that part of the country. So many great builders but Mr. Henderson is the peak of guitar builders on those Appalachian Mountains.
This was amazing! I really enjoyed it, and thank you SO much for doing this. Thanks to Mr. Wayne Henderson for being so gracious to have this interview! Such a wonderful man! God Bless you all !!!
Wayne really was gracious to take a break from his work to talk to us. He mentioned PBS had been there the week before so I'm looking forward to that interview.
How interesting this story about Mr. Henderson is however, I played guitar for 50 years and honestly never heard of him until watching this video today. I used to be able to play eletric, steel strings and, now I mostly play my 2 favorite classical guitars because the treble strings are plastic. This is easier on my finger tips now that I hit the big 62, the necks are wider but, my hands are big enough so, I still play them daily. I can remember first learning how to Travis picking over 30 years ago, my playing took off like a rocket. I play guitar, fiddle, mandolin and, keyboards some as well. I thank you for sharing this video about Mr. Henderson, it's been an absolute treat learning about this fine guitar maker and, fine guitar player!
I am not an acoustic player, nor am I any good at making small talk with folks I don't know, but it would surely be amazing to meet and talk with Wayne. He really impressed me. Thanks for looking him up and doing this interview.
I have read the book not long after it came out, went with my dad as he and Wayne set down and talked for a while. I got Wayne to sign my book and he told me Allen was there so find him to get it sign so I got both of them to sign my book an been on the shelf since then. That was June 16 2012 and my dad was so happy to talk to Wayne as my dad played just about anything with strings.
Surviving the postal service is his greatest accomplishment. I made 32 years and retired first day I could! All the bad things you heard about it is true
My group was blessed with the opportunity to sing a couple songs at a local concert. Wayne is salt of the Earth kind of person. He handed me #500 like we had been friends for 50 years. Hes got the best stories as well.
Some years ago I handed Wayne my beat up '69 Brazilian D-45 to pick on. He says. ".. that thayrs some fine lookin wood. I could build you a a right nice guitar out of it..." Truth be told, I probably should have let him cart it home.
What a great person Wayne is. Not only can he build guitars he can make the best omelette you ever eat I won two of his guitars I wouldn’t take one million for either he is just special to me
Very nice story. How does a person become a master builder? - a rare thing. Sounds like he's earned it. Being a washed up old picker myself, really appreciated the sound of #400. Best wishes to him to reach 1000. Thank you for sharing.
Very cool interview with a true craftsman who learned the old fashioned way, through years of experience and continuous learning and improvement. Great attitude and desire to do great work is always going to produce a skilled professional. And local walnut is a great tonewood, as well and nice maple.
Wayne is truly a national treasure and his guitars are absolutely top notch. I would love to play one some day. I really enjoyed this interview. I hope to one day get up there to meet him and pick a tune or two. Thank you for posting this it was fascinating. So glad i stumbled upon your channel i will gladly subscribe. Cheers..
I've never heard if this fella... I ran across this video looking around for guitar building videos.. Wayne lives about 2.5 hours from where I'm at in Virginia.. Wish there were more bass builders around.
Wayne is wearing a Boston Red Sox baseball cap. I was wondering if he is an actual MLB fan and, if so, a Red Sox fan? Since he lives in Virginia, perhaps he is a Nationals or an Orioles fan? Thanks so much for a first cabin interview.

@BryanClark-gk6ie i really appreciate your comment. First interview I've ever done, didn't know until right before i would be doing it, happened to have some small cheap mics on me, and was a bit intimidated to talk to him. Rather make a guitar for a kid who doesn't have one than for Eric Clapton. Welcome to the America we grew up in.
Right?!
Every year for thirty years he has made five guitars a year that he gives to raise money for scholarships for kids. Learn before you speak.
Did you watch the entire video? Midway tells you where his heart is at
Go ahead and make them yourself. A kid doesn't need a Stradivarius
