    I'm learning this today and just wanted to say Chris' overview was excellent. It helped me a lot

    It's Graf Spee. There is no "r" in Spee. (pronounced Spey)

      Weirdly enough, the discriminating gamer review did excactly the same!

    Great review, guys :) And one could always house rule the dice rolls, maybe a 50/50 base before modifiers. I have Jaws and Mr Jack and I'm interested in Kelp so I'll pass on The Hunt, but the theme, art and mechanisms really seem to work well. Game deserves to do well.

      The Hunt is a small card-driven waregame, which is a very different genre than those. If you don't play that genre, you can easily skip it.

      @@KissellMissile Asymmetric. Hidden movement. On a map. Of course cardplay/actions/powers are different between games but the core is 'hide and seek'. I play all manner of games and enjoy card-driven games, COIN, wargames, all sorts.

    You didn’t compare it to Watergate, but your description makes me think of Watergate rather than the other games you mentioned.
    I love watergate, so I can’t wait to get this to the table :-)

      It definitely has some resemblance to Watergate, primarily in the card play and asymmetry, but the positional aspect and hidden movement really does make for a different experience.

    I have yet to receive my copy. The game ending conditions looked good to me. They needed to include the Battle of River Plate as a possible conclusion to the game.

    Perfect example of a crowdfunding campaign as well. Good price, reasonable shipping cost and delivered on time (I even got it slightly ahead of the original estimate, which is extremely rare with crowdfunding nowadays). Even if the game would be average it should get praise for that if nothing else.

    So now that you are wargaming converts.... advanced squad leader review next?

  • @cardboardconflicts
    @cardboardconflicts ปีที่แล้ว +1

    FYI, cards that don’t have your flag on it are in both decks…
    The battle is great…imagine as a German with 4 sunk ships…the tension of trying for that 5th ship knowing if you miss and Brit’s can locate you and you might lose that close REALLY amps the tension.

    Card driven version of Atlantic Chase, of course much simpler😂

    I’d suggest Watergate (one of designers of The Hunt did that). Also Red Flag Over Paris if you like card driven wargames.

    Tom being stuck on this being about submarines was hillarious.
    I think I'm going to pass on this as I rarely have the chance to play 2 player and the randomness of the die would probably be annoying enough that I'd prefer to play something else.

    The use of the d6 is very often the most archaic element of wargames. A great many can come down to a strategy of "roll better," and it's justified as part of the simulation, but I wish that more clever designs were used.

    • @Gokkus87
      @Gokkus87 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Fully agree. Apart from the randomness it really looks like a very nice game. As is though, I have no interest in it. I feel a game like this should be about strategy, not luck.

    • @Quincy_Morris
      @Quincy_Morris ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Dice are in lots of games. You’re complaining that this game is like other games in that it includes the most common type of dice?

    And it's Graf Spee; no R.

      That’s not fair. The submarine stuff was all in fun, and an honest mistake. We all thought subs were involved at first, and it has zero to do with our knowledge of the mechanics of the game, or our ability to critically assess it. This was an unnecessary cheap shot.

      @@michaeldilisio557 Thanks for the reply. Well, was it all in fun, implying you all knew what you were doing, or was it a mistake? Either or.
      It does have impact when the viewer clicks away from the review at 2 minutes in when it appears at least one of the reviewers knows nothing about the game being reviewed.
