    The Dark Lord looks awesome. I used the car tire inner tube for my Vader cape. It is a more matte finish on both sides and looks pretty close to the original. Can't wait to see more videos.

    Fascinating. My vintage Darth had the same problem and my Dad fixed it by putting a small screw into the head and the head of the screw was small enough to slide into the hollow neck stump. It meant that Darth had a head that moved similar to a ball joint.

    I would recommend having the shiny side on the inside because the inside of his cape is shiny in the movie.

    I found 2 beaten up Vader figs in a goodwill store and just like to thank you for this cape pattern, and the tip on how to make a replacement saber for Vader.
    I ended up using the housing of an RK-cable that i shoved a toothpick inside, and at the tip, I managed stuck a smaller and thinner cable thread.
    Fot the cape, I found some sort of thicker, stiff, but still flixible fabric, that was some sort of plastic and fabric in one (I can only describe it as some sort of fake leather-vinyl)

    This is a great restoration mate, i love to see what others would chuck away saved.You were absolutely right about the sun yellowing figures . Ive had a few new release figures i bought a while back near a window for the last six months, but not totally exposed to the sun and they have very lightly creamed but not the arms and legs.maybe a few videos on the Rogue one models one day.cheers.

    • @mannye

      I think that would work as well as maybe a little semi-gloss clear?

  • @gregallan80
    @gregallan80 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    Thanks. I used your template and the same inflatable toy.
    However, while the cape was still stuck to the template, I used some 800 grit wet and dry on the glossy side of the cape to get a matt finish. Took 5 minutes and was quite a delicate job but now both sides are a similar matt finish. It looks great!

    • @drapedaddy
      @drapedaddy 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Dude! I found that the vinyl on a three-ring binder is just about the perfect thickness and finish! They're only a couple of bucks at Wal-Mart, and you can get multiple capes from each one. You'll want the ones that are cardboard, with a vinyl outer "shell". Give it a try; white ones also work for Hoth Snowtroopers and ANH Princess Leia, too!

    • @AvengerII
      @AvengerII 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Wal Mart is a VERY cheap source of plastic for projects.
      Some modellers buy the plastic "For Sale" yard signs and such. They use those as sources of modelling plastic because they're a lot like the sheet plastic they sell at hobby stores. Of course, anything purpose-built sold at an arts and crafts or arts store is MARKED up compared to similar products sold elsewhere!
      Honestly, if you wanted to get containers to store supplies, just buy a fish tacklebox... They're cheaper than the "art bin" boxes they sell art stores and are virtually the same thing!

    • @toypolloi
      @toypolloi  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      The great thing with the lego as it clicks in place and holds the head on. Not sure you would get that with just a raw plug. But it would be worth a try.

    As an alternative, I'm seeing some limited success with a different method: Heat and "crack" open the figures, remove the old neck piece and drill out the center. The hard part is finding some 0 gauge screws ( found some in the model train section of my hobby store) about a 1/2 inch long. bore out a hole in the head center of were the neck was, add a little glue for strength and screw in the neck. let it dry then re-assemble the figure. I've done this with 3 figures so far (with big heads like the Sandman) and will be attempting a small head (Leia) soon. Hope this helps.

    Model builder tip. I've noticed most model builders will just lay a bead of glue around the seam after dry fitting then hold it in place until the glue sets. Oddly enough it holds in place. There's a professional model builder I watch a lot on youtube I believe It's Andy's Hobby Shop. I know you are not a model builder. But with all the restorations you do I notice you run into issues that model builders run into alot. They seem to have a lot of tips and tricks that I think would help you. Don't get me wrong I'm not knocking your work. I think you do a fantastic job and I love watching your videos. I just think some model building tricks would help you a great deal since you both deal with plastics. One example is the super glue you use. They make tips that can go on bottles of super glue that let you get in to very tight places and really control the flow. Plus I'm curious if model cement wouldn't work better but I'm sure you know better than me when it comes to that. Thank you so much for sharing your videos. I really have learned a great deal from you. And I think between your restoration videos and the model building videos I've been watching I'm thinking about getting into restoration myself now.

    • @toypolloi
      @toypolloi  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for the tips. I watch a lot of modelling videos as well. I try to make all my fixes at a level that anyone can do and require no special tools or equipment. No point showing how to fix something if it requires you to spend a lot of money. That's why I never get to complicated. Cheers

    It may be possible to "matt down" the shiny vinyl with a matt varnish spray . The likes of Humbrol won't work very well , but some discount ( Pound) shops sell an acrylic based varnish which is surprisingly good . Love the videos , keep up the good work .
