seeing how great gsp's grappling was so early in his career knowing that he started his martial arts training as a karate guy is really impressive. The man is a freak athlete; could probably succeed at just about anything he wanted to.
GSP really showcased the future of MMA. In this fight we see it all: immaculate take downs, well timed defenses against an awesome grappler, and viscous ground and pound style strikes. Watching this live was transformative for the sport. This was writing on the wall for coaches who realized that just being the best in your particular style would no longer satisfy in MMA.
While true, it also made the sport more boring. Everybody adopted the same style more or less, and the best athlete or the biggest body frame simply wins.
Gsp on top getting strikes in, active Mazzagatti : Let`s go guys come on stay busy Gsp still on top getting more strikes in, ups the pace Mazzagatti : Stop! Let`s stand up What an idot of a ref

@johnnytork yeah but I've never seen commentators so reluctant to just stfu about the guy they thought was better before the fight happened, even as he's being dominated at his own game.
GSP is by far my favorite, he is the epitomy how fighters should be, lets his work do his talking.. he is just a humble hard working man! love you GSP!
True but it's probably because GSP was new and he had nothing to go off of. Towards the end he knew GSP won and wasn't even hurt. So he's not completely blind bias like some people lol.
@Really.cant.say.butYes thats a troll comment, GSP was never on the juice.... this is just laughable, everyone knows GSP was a clean fighter, never tested positive for anything, karo got mauled by a superior fighter
@@KrazieSevin Georges was definitely on something. The notion that he was this clean athlete beating juiceheads is a narrative that is way too good to be true. I'll never believe it.
Since GSP was champion for so long we just take for granted that he is phenomenal, but for those not aware of the context at the time, this was a huge step up in competition for GSP and he was not really expected to win as Karo Parisyan was a very talented rising prospect back then. This fight kind of derailed him of his illusions and he didn't really emerge as the great fighter we expected and I suggest this loss was the grain of sand in his confidence shoe that he could never really ignore. After all, if this was Georges' first fight, how much better could this kid become?
I’m not sure it’s accurate to say that this fight derailed his illusions. In his next fight he won the WEC welterweight title and had the longest winning streak of his career. In fact he only lost one in the four years that followed this fight and that was a fight of the year battle. It seems like he was as successful after this fight as he ever was.
@Hog Nutz doesn't matter. Back in the day, WEC wasn't the B League like Bellator was. They had just as much popularity as UFC did and were a serious contender to the UFC. Same as Strikeforce.
What a gorgeous ground fighting clinic! Parisyan is like fighting a snake! Kudos to both these great fighters! Would love to see again every single fight both of these warriors have had in their careers.
4:15 Right after George gets flipped, he scoots his butt back to prevent Karo from being able to torque on that arm. Genius move, comes with years of practice
The funny thing is that this was only GSP's 6th pro fight and he was only 22 years old at the time of this fight. So good at such a young age, this level of competition was almost like being fed to the wolves for his 1st UFC fight. Fighters do not get this type of experienced fighter in their 1st fight anymore. Unless you were a champ in a different organization like a Michael Chandler, but he had 26 pro fights before he first fought in the UFC.
These are the subtle things rogain always fails to see. Karo was dominated the entire fight in every way shape and form. Karo was way overhyped like many fighters and GSP displayed top level of talent. Such a class act too.
I don’t understand how he though wrapping your legs around someone while being pinned on your back getting punched/elbowed for 4 minutes can win you a round
Karo: grabs George's finger after being hit with a double leg for the fifth time Joe Rogan: "OH HE'S GOT A HOLD OF AN ARM HERE, HE COULD GET A KIMURA!"
Right lol. Gsp dominated that fight. Out grappled, ground and pound. He just beat on him. They acted as if he would pull off a submission at anytime. George just rolled him over into his guard.
“Joe had both nuts in his mouth the whole fight”: That’s the funniest shit I’ve heard (read)in a while; I started to laugh out loud and aspirated on my coffee!
People got to realize the reason Joe was all over Karo is because people finishing off their back was very common. So when gsp was able to punish someone who is that high level on the grouns as Karo it was almost weird to root for it and he was looking for the submission to land which was more common at the time. When I saw this fight I was like...dude this gsp is something else
15:25 The contrast in athleticism and talent between the two fighters is so apparent in that reversal. He also should a lot of poise for such a young fighter.
If you ever watch Chael's channel, he said that GSP is by far the strongest person he's ever grappled with, and I believe it. Greatest fighter of all time and likely the most popular Canadian athlete ever.
You hit the nail on the head! GSP was one of the first super athletes to compete. He ushered in a wave of these guys who trained like Olympians instead of part-time fighters. I remember watching him, in the beginning, thinking that this is turning into a whole new game.
@Daniel213141 It was almost unfair how much more powerful George was than this Arab dude. Twice the fight should have been over by submission, especially the second time when George simply powered his way out of it.
No easing into the UFC for GSP. They threw him right in there with Karo Parisyan. Different sport these days with all the tune-up fights to try to hype up an emerging talent. I think of Sean O'Malley, who might actually be awesome, but we still don't know, is the perfect counterexample. The level of competition O'Malley has faced 7 fights in the UFC is just bewilderingly low. GSP fought for the WW title in his 3rd UFC fight. Came up short then went on a tear and was undisputed champion by fight 9.
It comes down to the amount of fighters the ufc has now, they have the luxury of giving potential stars easy fights to keep the hype train rolling for longer.

GSP really showcased the future of MMA. In this fight we see it all: immaculate take downs, well timed defenses against an awesome grappler, and viscous ground and pound style strikes.
His first UFC fight. His 6th fight technically. Only 22. I'm the same age as Georges. Long time ago 2003 I believe.
@Hog Nutz Multiple WEC guys became UFC champion though
@Hog Nutz doesn't matter. Back in the day, WEC wasn't the B League like Bellator was. They had just as much popularity as UFC did and were a serious contender to the UFC. Same as Strikeforce.

4:15 Right after George gets flipped, he scoots his butt back to prevent Karo from being able to torque on that arm. Genius move, comes with years of practice
thank you for that. i love how GSP also blocks Karo from jumping over his body right after that.

For a while we were having Collegiate Champs and WRESTLING medalists going against guys who probably weren't even the Best in their Dojo.I remember thinking back in those"dark days","I Wish the TOP Karate,Kung Fu,Kickboxing, Muay thai,Silat and Other Organizations would send their best" to stop this grappling madness 🤣😂.....tough times for more TRADITIONAL systems back then🙄...........But it got better; From GSP and the Machida Brothers with their Karate based skills,to CUNG LE and Pettis with their Kungfu and Tae Kwon do kicking combos and REAL Kickboxers Maurice Smith and Mirko Cro Cop,ALL come from TRADITIONAL styles and USE many of those TECHNIQUES if one knows where to look😏.......There are STILL some valid systems with good stuff in them,as before we just have to WAIT for more open minded and SKILLED practitioners to get interested.....KUDOS To Connor McG,Barboza,Makdessi, MVP, ALDO and Early pioneers like Igor V, Russian Red Devil fight team, Chute Boxe and even UFC Kenpo/Karate/Kung fu fighter KEITH HACKNEY ,who went in with just his TRADITIONAL style and BEAT A JUDOKA AND A +300 lb Sumo(no gloves) !!....He was also the first striker to give ROYCE SOME TROUBLE 🤔🤔....I think these internet trolls that trash TRADITIONAL styles Always forget just HOW good he had to be to just "survive" in those days.
Joe: Karo is dangereous..
