    LOL, show the spoiler and then say, "Spoiler Alert". It's all good. Game looks amazing.

    • @MrImportantGuy
      @MrImportantGuy 8 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      'skip if you don't want spoilers'. Then they go right back to it without warning. this is the fourth video that I have watched and the first spoiler I've had....
      Still a really informative and we'll made video, but maybe just add a pop up to warn people.

    • @cromusz
      @cromusz 8 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      I'm sure it's difficult trying to show what's in the box while keeping any "secrets" hidden. I'd say that anything in a sealed box/envelope should be kept secret until opened by the player.
      They actually showed the boss at the very beginning of the unboxing along with other stuff in the box. At least they didn't start going through the envelopes!

      @themisdirected6574 8 ปีที่แล้ว +14

      The figure itself is meant to be a surprise. I, for one, wish this wasn't revealed or discussed in the video. :/

    • @BryceChristiansen
      @BryceChristiansen 8 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Agreed, totally wasn't necessary. Every other video on this game held that detail secret except these guys. I don't think RIOT would have hidden that away in it's own separate box if they wanted it to be spoiled.

    • @SpcSamRI
      @SpcSamRI 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Right. I mean, they only, specifically said not to open things until told, sealed the box with caution tape, purposely obscured anything other than the axe, and hid the other "secret" component for that miniature. Of course it would be a Spoiler.

  • @Shawn4168
    @Shawn4168 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    4:10 @David: I believe that Specter Ops had spot gloss for the numbers on each space on the board. But that actually caused some readability issues, so this might be a case of spot gloss implemented well on a board.

    Oh that spoiler, without notice, should be careful with people who are sensitive about it.

    Was highly impressed with the production quality video. Having never seen your stuff before, I expected to be a pretty well-known, popular channel for people who like board game. *looks at views and subs and sees around 15k and 10k respectively*. I was quite surprised in a good way! Thanks for the quality review. I was a little suspicious at just how positive you were about the game, but the other comments laid my fears of a bribed review to rest. Keep making quality material!

    Production value looks amazing, but to be honest a company like Riot Games with their art department and $$$ it would be expected. I like how it 'fits' with their lore and has elements of the Moba in it, such as the hourglass for the drafting, thematically they know what they are doing.
    As for the game itself. It seems nice and the production value justifies the cost, but I'm not sure it would be entirely for me and my playgroup - we like competitive aspects. Maybe if we'd get to try it or the price drops a bit.
    On a sidenote - this is the first time I've seen a Man vs Meeple video.. it is a very clear explanation and a good showcase of the game and its elements. You guys also have great production value - I subbed.

  • @cromusz
    @cromusz 8 ปีที่แล้ว +6

    Not sure if I'm more impressed with the inserts or the figures. This looks fantastic.
    Note: There's some sealed box spoilers in the video so tread carefully if you're wanting to avoid spoilers.
    $75 price point is insane.

    • @zooleebest

      can't lie but $75 is disgustingly cheap.

    There is zero argument that this isn't an incredible value, but out of curiosity, how replayable are the scenarios? Is this a one shot run like a Legacy, or is it just the character leveling and "surprises" that are Legacy like?

  • @88outtatime
    @88outtatime 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    I for one hope that other companies do have to take notice, and the days of a game releasing with a $50 or 60 price point with garbage components are numbered

    • @cromusz
      @cromusz 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      It probably won't affect the rest of the boardgame industry too much. The price gets marked up by the distributor and the FLGS. You do see some games being cheaper from online retailers and that cuts into their (retailer's) profits.

  • @eugenb.8448
    @eugenb.8448 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I'm usually quite suspicious of mini-heavy games. But this review and all others are just so positive that I'm now utterly intrigued. Throw in my two favourite mechanisms (co-op & programming) and I am definitely looking forward to owning a copy of this!
    And the production quality, wow. So glad they're selling this direct to keep the price down. I hope it's a huge success as it looks like a lot of fun. And the small items, like the timer to help alleviate some AP, is an impressive amount of thought into keeping the game play smooth and only as long as necessary. The added stress of the timer sounds like it'll be fun :-).

    • @jaxommm
      @jaxommm 8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Agreed! I find it hilarious too that the LOL players are complaining that this is way overpriced. On the other hand, I am looking at little Euros being priced at 50-70 Euros at the upcoming Spiel for just some wood bits and a pair of generic dice.

    • @Eyeballz02
      @Eyeballz02 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      They have no finacial risk: They make a ton of money and even if M vs M fails they would not notice.
      They sell the game in their shop.
      They don't need any advertising.
      The "high quality" stuff is mostly plastic which is very inexpensive.
      ...
      This isn't some kind of charity, they calculated a big revenue. Why would I know? I don't but I play Leauge of Legends quite some time and I know their pricing model ingame.
      anybody that thinks Riot would charge 75 $ only because they care so much about their community is just jumping the hype train. They damn well know it would not sell for 150 $ or above.
      Plus, although it's a solid game, its not something that will be played at a party or spontanously with some friends that are not really into board games.
      Don't get me wrong, it's a nice game but it is nothing really special and definitely doesn't come at a super low price. It is moderate.

    • @PauloRenato23
      @PauloRenato23 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I disagree... they could have easily charge well $200 for this due to the amount of Minis in the game, the quality of the minis and the quality of the rest of the components... that alone would justify the $200 tag, just look at Kingdom Death Monster for example...
      So, if they wanted, they could have made more money... I'm not saying that they are doing this for the community or out of the kindness of their hearts, no they certainly plan on getting more money in the future, they were just experimenting in this new market and wanted to make a BIG Splash and have everyone talking about this, even non boardgamers... this is excellent PR from their part, extremely well done and that's where the big profit comes for them...
      A Fantastic Production game at a low price coming out of nowhere, I don't remember a game so well kept secret and getting a reveal like this... Kudos to Riot Games...
      As for the quality of the gameplay itself, well what for me can be a fantastic game for you can be trash :)
      Not saying that his is fantastic, it sure looks to be a very cool game with amazing production at a fantastic price... I'm sold!

    • @B0rghalRantipole
      @B0rghalRantipole 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      This game is not so compelx that you couldn't introduce it to non-gamers. Nobody will be playing this at parties, sure, but when is the last time you played a $100 high production quality game at a party? This is not a party game, this is a whole different market segment, and comparable games like Star Wars: Rebellion, Arcadia Quest, Cthulhu Wars etc. can go cry in a corner compared to this game's price/value ratio. This would definitely sell for $150. For evidence just look at any Kickstarter project by Cool Mini Or Not.
      Far from moderate by current industry value standards.

    • @JohnLudlow
      @JohnLudlow 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Right now it's £420 on Amazon, and ~£150 on eBay, and I'm not interested in paying either price. I guess that's a supply issue, because the MvM homepage shows it to be $75, which is actually pretty good considering what you get.

  • @NordySpeaks
    @NordySpeaks 8 ปีที่แล้ว +7

    You guys eluded to the price point, but this can't be overstated. This game, from a component standpoint, is revolutionary. I'm not sure, but this seems to be a Riot Games loss leader venture. The game may be great, but this is setting the bar artificially high in the industry. I'm really conflicted on the long term impact of this game and the impact on the industry as a whole. I would really like to hear from someone like Jamey Stonemaier or owners of other companies, like CMON, who are pushing to have deluxe components, but not in retail editions. I was listening to the Miami Dice group, and Sam states, "See industry, look here at M&M, it can be done!" It can be? Really? I'm calling BS. It can't be done, or it would have been done already. Riot Games was able to produce this game because they have the resources to take a hit on this. M&M is a pure marketing ploy to draw people into their video game product. Love to hear some feedback and whether I'm way off base here.

    • @jaketomkinson4554
      @jaketomkinson4554 8 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Riot Games are only selling the game directly through their website, thus, cutting out the middle men. It's the difference between selling to a distributor at 40% of the recommended retail price, and selling to the consumer at full price. I would speculate Riot Games is in no way marketing the game as a loss leader, and will be making a profit on the project. The game would have to cost over $75 (minus sales tax) per unit to develop, produce, and ship to their distribution centre in order to incur a loss. For reference, you can expect even a component rich game to cost between 20-30% of the recommended retail price to manufacture. On this basis, they could afford to spend as much as three times the average on production and still make a tidy profit, as they receive all the proceeds of the sale.
      Hope this helps. :)

    • @Obstfliege33
      @Obstfliege33 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I agree with the part that this game might set the industry standard too high, and also that the profit margin for this boardgame will probably be very low. However, i dont think that M&M is a pure marketing ploy. I mean, think about it: As a incredibly successfull video game company with over 100 million active players, where would you look to expand your franchise to? Which target group holds enough potential new league players that it would be worth investing into? Do you really think the answer would be boardgame fans? I mean, even if M&M becomes a smashing hit within the boardgame community, and even if it becomes so huge that the boardgame community grows by a lot, there would still not be enough potential new players for league of legends to make this effort worth it.
      However, why would riot do this then? I honestly cant tell you. Maybe diversification? Being a one-trick pony can be dangerous, and riot has a lot of capital to explore new business areas. However, if diversification is their goal, then i think we will see a lot of different new things from riot, because again, boardgames are...kinda niche if you compare them to the video gaming industry. Maybe they just have huge boardgame fans at riot and the money to just do it? I have no idea what the motives behind this are, what do you think about this?
      Please excuse if what i wrote makes no sense, english is not my first language.

    • @NordySpeaks
      @NordySpeaks 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      One major detail that I learned: Tencent, one of China's largest tech
      companies, owns majority stake in Riot Games. That would play a major
      role in manufacturing costs. Scrap the whole loss leader idea.

    • @cimis92
      @cimis92 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I've been a Riot/League of Legends fan since pretty much the beginning, and also happen to be a board game fan as well. So following project as to why would a company like Riot make something like this. Turns out it is a major passion project from a big portion of their development team that they have been working on for ~3 years. So at a slight profit or just even breaking even they would be happy with. Looking at the quality and the cost and a huge (100 million active players) fan base, I think it will be a huge success.

    • @davidwayneflowers
      @davidwayneflowers 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      You probably could. Here are a few ideas to try:
      ===========================
      Capture the flag:
      Put 2 on 2 capture the flag style. Make a 2x2 tile map. Put the 4 crystal shards at the center of the map. Each mech can carry a cyrstal, but when damaged, they drop the crystal (rolling the rune die just like in the missions). You have to carry the shard back to your start square (one of the two outside corners on your side of the board).
      Alter the rules so that when you hit another mech with an attack it does damage to that mech (maybe opponent mechs only).
      I am not sure about ramming. I would probably try ramming another mech does NOT cause damage to opposing mechs, but does push them. Just like it does now.
      Once a crystal is scored, it is out play. First side to claim 2 crystals wins.
      No schematics.
      Alternatively you might have it where the first team to have both crystals in place win but the crystals stay on the map corner (and thus can be stolen).
      Draft like you would in co-op. Each person grabs one card at a time alternating from the start player. Rotate start player so it goes back and forth to each person each time. You need to be specific which mech you are drafting for. It has to be the current player mech first.
      ===========================
      Race:
      Put the tiles in a 4x1 orientation. Place the 4 mechs on one side of the long map. First team to have a player that makes it to the other side first wins. (or maybe first player to have get both mechs to the other side wins).
      Otherwise same as above. Draft alternates. Damage opponent mechs. Etc.
      ===========================
      King of the hill(ish)
      Create a 2x2 tile map just like the capture the flag map. In this varient instead of trying to bring the crystals back to the spawn points, you get a point for each round you have a crystal. You will get 2 points for a round where your mechs both have a crystal. Use minions to talley points. Go X rounds (maybe 16). The person with the most points wins.
      ===========================
      Killing dome
      Create a 2x2 tile map. Place minions on all rune spots. Roll for starting player. In reverse player order, place a mech on one of the maps 4 corners. Play like you normally would on a mission except mechs can damage opposing mechs (or maybe not). Keep track of kills for each player. The person with the most minion kills after X rounds wins (maybe 16)
      The minion phase is one that is probably going to take some play testing to get right. Since I am just talking out of my mouth with no testing, these might not work so well.
      Idea 1) At the end of a round, roll the rune die. All minions move in that direction, Spawn minions on that rune color. Minions do damage like normal.
      Idea 2) At the end of the round, move the minions towards the closes mech. spawn minions on all spawn spots.
      What I wouldn't suggest is to add a way to use schematics. The Hex Minefield from Ziggs is going to be too powerful. You can't have a level where the minions spawn on a specific rune color and have that ability in play. It will be OP.
      ========================
      I am sure there are other ways to make this competitive as well. These are just the first few that came to my mind.

    Such a rollercoaster emotionally... Yay, Yordles! Gah, no Veigar?!? Yay, nice components! Bummer, co-op... Yay, campaign! Shoot, Legacy elements with limited replayability!? Yay, programming! Oh, very limited options for the programming. Yay, value! Oh, still a hefty investment... Well, might go for it for the minion figs alone... have to think about it.

    • @cromusz
      @cromusz 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It sounds like the only legacy part is that you get to use different things with different campaigns. It doesn't sound like there is any destruction of components. I've heard there's a lot of replayability since there are challenge modes and such. You can go back and play old scenarios by taking new stuff out.

    Man...they sure made you all keep shush about this one. I read somewhere that it was around 3 years in developing and not a single leaked photo or something. Sure looks awesome and as a LoL player must have for me. Great job on review as always. Keep up the awesome work you do.

      There was a leak when one of the sites released their article early! NDAs are serious business and are generally not worth breaking if you want to maintain a relationship with the company and your money.
      You could tell reviewers were hyped about this game with how often they'd hint at an upcoming review that they couldn't talk about. Glad the hype seems warranted at this point.

      Yeah. Game sure looks interesting enough. A production quality looks amazing. Too bad I'm at Essen Spiel on release date and I believe game will sold out in minutes.

      It sounds like there are 30k in the initial print run with another 30k on order. I think they're going to do their best to get copies into the hands of people interested.
      I'll be interested in how many people that don't traditionally play boardgames will pick this up thanks to the LoL branding.

    Can this be played single player?

    • @cromusz
      @cromusz 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I don't see why you wouldn't be able to play single player and use multiple characters. You may have to give yourself more time in the draft stage.
