Glad the video gave you some Ideas on how to get it out. If you have a 1/2 to 3/8" adapter you can use different size driver extensions to adapt them to get the length you need. Hope you get it figured out. Best Wishes & Blessings. Keith Noneya

Hi Kevin It's actually best to disconnect both Negatives and both Positives on both sides, and by convention it's best to disconnect both Positives. How did you know you needed a new starter? My '95 7.3 has charged batteries but is near impossible to start. It barely turns over. Just cleaned my battery terminals and no difference. Runs great if I can actually get it to fire up. Sound like a bad starter to you?
Hi Matt, Yep that sounds like a bad starter. Reason is it runs great when started but turns over slowly. So something in the starter has most likely shorted. Starting systems usually have a few things in them, they are: - The battery, - The Solenoid, this part connects the Positive battery cable to the starter motor itself, which then turns over. - the Cables (Positive & Negative). - Brake interlock to ensure you have your foot on the brake before you start. - Safety Neutral Switch or Transmission Interlock to ensure the vehicle is in Park or Neutral, - Ignition Switch and - Starting relay. Primarily if all the systems are working, the starter will turn over. In order for the starter to turn over it needs LOTS of Current (Juice) at usually 12VDC. Some older vehicles used 6VDC, VW's etc. If a starter is turning over slowly you can pretty much rule out all the safety interlocks which only leaves voltage and current. Voltage and current are delivered by the Battery, the Cables and the Solenoid. If one of them is corroded, weak, loose the starter will turn over slowly. So here are some common problems that can mimic a low battery or bad starter, they are: 1. Corroded battery cable clamps. Sometimes they look nice and shinny on the outside but when you take them off you'll have a dark grey or black coating on the area that contacts the battery posts. Recently had this problem on a friends truck. He said the starter was bad and had it checked twice, it was good. After I changed it I looked at his battery cable clamps that he said he had checked and were good. I rechecked them and they were heavily corroded on the inside of the clamps. After cleaning them up it turned over like a new truck. 2. Internally damaged or corroded battery cables. Over time the copper inside the cables corrode, if they get flexed enough they can even internally break and act like a huge resistor. You can't always spot this on the battery cable clamp area, so you'll have to measure the volts at the battery when you crank the vehicle, then measure the voltage at the starter batter cable where it connects to the solenoid when turning over the vehicle. There should be no more than a volt difference and normally no more that .5vdc difference between the battery voltage and the starter solenoid. If so take the batteries and the starter in and have them checked, if good change the cables. Ran into this problem on my Dodge Grand Caravan, drove me and a friend nuts for a few weeks. 3. Bad ground or loose starter. Starters over time can become loose and basically don't get a good connection to the block or transmission case. This forces all the electricity "juice" to go through a small area and sometimes it can't pass enough current to properly power the starter, so it turns slow. This is an easy fix, just disconnect both battery neg cable clamps from the battery, remove the starter and clean up the starter face and the area that it mounts to the engine or transmission. The same applies to the negative battery cable that goes to both the frame of the truck and the block of the truck. Make sure those areas where the negative cables connects it clean and tight. If you've already ensured your batteries are fully charged and have had them checked, and the starter does turn over, then it's most likely the starter or one of the tree items listed above. Hope this helps. Best Wishes n Blessings. Keith
